posting this for diehard to see
because he had complained to me about problems with pata/sata adapters mounting inside the mdd
which can have physical obstruction issues when closing the door
he had bought a sata-pata converter for a drive
similar idea to this (minus the converter board)
to deal with this issue

im guessing the above product would be a good solution to deal with this as it has some space inside the form factor of a 3.5" drive (examine the video)

anyway this lets u fit 2 SSD into the normal position where a 3.5" drive would go

good price.. good use for mounting 2 ssd inside your MDD

this thing could also be used to fit alot more drives into a computer
fitting 2 drives for every 3.5" space in an mdd for example would give u
8 drives inside an MDD!!!!

consider that they now produce 2.5" form factor 1TB "RED" NAS drives http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=15_1086_215_217&item_id=063681 and also 2.5" form factor 2 TB "GREEN" drives
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=15_1086_215_217&item_id=067484

using this simple drive mount kit in combination with sata adapters
you could achieve 16 TB in one MDD!!!!
but that would require:
4 drive mounts (4 x 8.99$)
8 green 2TB drives (8 x 180$)
2 seritek 1v4 (2 x 120$)
would be a hefty price tag, and would take up 2 pci slots, but its doable;)

if u were to buy 2.5" sata drives not sure about heat issues / cooling of 2.5" mechanical drives

but it does mention the use of mechanical drives in this kit aswell:

Unbelievably Lightweight with Remarkable Cooling

Our EZ-Fit Lite MB290SP-B is constructed with highly robust ABS plastic and fuses desirable traits such as durability and lightweight. One piece construction means there are less moving parts to be concerned with, which in turn means it's less likely break. Additionally, creating a one-piece design makes manufacturing this unit very cost efficient and allows us to pass the savings onto our customers. The frame has a weightless flexible stabilizer that secures the drive in place and provides shock absorption and anti-vibration properties – great for protecting your drives against impact. Open air designs allow the drive to be cooled by the fans in your chassis. With our skeletal design, the EZ-Fit Lite MB290SP-B allows airflow in all the crucial areas of the drive which helps drive performance. Elevated ridges on the platform raise the drive just enough to allow heat dispersion keeping your SSD/HDD cooler. We've also included side vents on the bracket to let heat escape from the drive

im willing to bet though that the heat from 8 2.5" drives would be alot less then normal 3.5" drives given that they are usually used in laptops

also 5400 rpm drives probably produce less heat

so this brings up an important question..
would it be less heat for 2.5" drives (laptop drives) to be used inside an mdd? rather than 3.5" drives?

we know that SSD produce significantly less heat then mechanical drives..
but is 2.5" mechanical superior to 3.5" mechanical? in terms of less heat production..
to explore this we also have to keep in mind the drives rotational speed..

form factor / rpm
2.5" 5400 rpm
2.5" 7200 rpm
2.5" 10000 rpm
3.5" 5400 rpm
3.5" 7200 rpm
3.5" 10000 rpm

and dont forget different caching on different models, but that wont have an impact on heat.. i dont think?

to review options, here are some links to some
sales sites listings of 2.5" drives
from some well known retailers (north america)
http://www.ncix.com/category/2-5-hard-drives-7b-1044.htm
http://www.newegg.ca/All-Laptop-Hard-Drives/SubCategory/ID-380
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=1277
http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?cPath=15_1086_215_217

and also,
drive manufacturers:
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/internal/mobile/
http://www.seagate.com/ca/en/products/laptop-mobile-storage/laptop-internal-drives/

i notice the wd page does not list any 64mb cache options on the 2.5" form factor..
its either 8mb or 16mb

i also notice that theres different heights listed.. not sure if that would be a concern with this drive bay kit i started this thread with.. ok it is a concern. it says it supports 7mm + 9.5mm drive heights... so i guess that knocks out the green 2tb drive !!!!!! but thats ok the 1TB red drive is 9.5"" and it looks like a better option.. plus it has 3 years warranty on the red vs 2 year warranty on the green...

green = 2 yr warranty
blue = 2 yr warranty
red = 3 yr warranty
black = 5 yr warranty

but black only comes in 750gb max size!! black or red seem to be the superior drives.

but wait!
examining the western digital page closer i see they have a dual 2.5" combintion of an ssd + mechanical drive called "Wdblack2"
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=1190

The power of two

WD has redefined the PC with the next big thing in ultra-fast performance storage. Introducing WD Black², the world's first 2.5-inch dual drive storage solution. The WD Black² dual drive is a completely new approach in a compromised solid-state and hybrid storage market. Finally you can have the speed of an SSD that you want and the capacity of a hard drive that you need in your notebook or all-in-one PC.

interesting! u can have 1tb + 120ssd in a single 2.5" form factor
trying to download the pdf specifications but its not loading:
http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/?id=446&type=49

this is more relative for people with laptops with only 1 drive bay..
i dont think its a 'fusion' drive but rather 2 drives in one connection / one form factor

the lowest prices i can see at my local shop:

WD Blue 320GB 2.5" SATA3 5400RPM 8MB Cache OEM Hard Disk (WD3200LPVX)
49.99$

Seagate Laptop Thin HDD 320GB 2.5" SATA2 5400RPM 16MB Cache OEM Hard Drive (ST320LT012)
Item Code: HDSG002279
50.99$

WD Blue 500GB 2.5" SATA3 5400RPM 8MB Cache OEM Hard Disk (WD5000LPVX)
54.99$

Seagate Laptop Ultrathin HDD 500GB 2.5" SATA3 5400RPM 16MB Cache OEM Hard Drive (ST500LT032)
54.99$

so..

2.5" 5400 RPM?
vs
3.5" 7200 RPM? (what i usually use)
=
less heat?

im thinking yes it would be! it must be..

anyway my picks would be:
the wd black 750gb 2.5"
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=15_1086_215_217&item_id=065111
72.99$  (5 yr warranty)

or
wd red 750gb 2.5"
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=15_1086_215_217&item_id=064619
62.99$  (3 yr warranty)

or
wd red 1TB 2.5"
http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=15_1086_215_217&item_id=063681
84.99$  (3 yr warranty)

the black with 16mb cache + 5 yr warranty is the way to go for sure
i can fit a 60gb ssd + this 750gb wd black drive in the same 3.5" mount kit!!
perfection!

heres another review

i asked diehard to share this info:
but he posts it in the other thread instead:

ACARD ARS-2133 IDE/PATA-to-SATA HDD/SSD Bridge Adapter

Lastly, I have used this adapter/bracket (which is exactly the size of an original PATA/IDE drive)
ACARD ARS-2133 IDE/PATA-to-SATA HDD/SSD Bridge Adapter
http://www.ebay.com/itm/261237296692?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
and mounted fast SATA notebook hard drives in MDDs

this device effectively deals with all the issues surrounding installing a sata drive
-power conversion (sata to 4pin molex)
-form factor (2.5" to 3.5" size)
-connection type (sata to pata)
a bit pricey for what it is, but it does the job!

note that it only stores 1 drive.. and the other mount kit stores 2
