RewireDLL.cpp(994)

if u get this error..
its most likely related to one of your VST plugins that uses rewire

first thing to do, DELETE YOUR AUTOLOAD document from your cubase folder
your autoload might be loading a vst that is incorrectly configured which is resulting in this error causing cubase to crash.

deleting the autoload document will also allow u to resume using cubase, u may encounter the error soon after but at least u will
have a better idea as to what is causing it.. based upon what u were doing before the error came up again.

🔍 Similar Errors (Common Pattern)

Users on Tracktion (via KVR Audio) reported encountering the same error:

    Projects\Rewire\ReWireDLL\portable\ReWireDLL.cpp(994): Verify Failure

This occurred even when they hadn't actively installed or used any ReWire app
    Steinberg Forums+14KVR Audio+14forum-archive.magix.info+14
    .

⚠️ What Does This Mean?

The error stems from Propellerhead's ReWire engine (used by apps like Reason, ACID), and is triggered when the host (Cubase, Tracktion, Acid) auto-scans for ReWire but finds a mismatched or missing component.

In many cases, it causes the entire host application to crash or freeze, especially if the DLL/VLL file is corrupt or improperly versioned.

âś… Known Fixes Shared by Users

1. Delete or Remove ReWire Components

Remove any ReWire.dll, .vll, or .cll from:

The System Folder / Extensions (Mac OS 9)

        Cubase’s plugin or support folders

This stops Cubase from scanning for ReWire entirely, preventing the verify failure

    .

2. Replace with a Newer ReWire Build

Some Windows users found that newer versions of ReWire.dll (e.g. build 195+) are more stable.

They copied the DLL from Cubase 6 into Cubase 5, which significantly reduced crashes. While this is Windows-specific advice, the principle may apply across platforms

🧠 Is There Mac OS 9-Specific Info?

There’s no direct discussion from Mac OS 9 forums explicitly talking about the line number 994 error on VLL/CLL files. However, the error message and context match that pattern:

Cubase attempts to initialize ReWire during playback or startup.

A missing or incompatible ReWire file causes VERIFY failures inside Propellerhead’s engine.

🚀 Step-By-Step Fix For Your Situation

For Mac OS 9 / Cubase VST 5.x:

Reboot into Mac OS 9 and open Extensions Manager.

Locate any ReWire-related extensions or plugin files:

Search names like ReWire.vll, ReWire Support, or Propellerhead ReWire.

Move all such files out of the Extensions folder (or disable them).

Also check inside Cubase VST 5 application folder for any ReWire component and move it.

    Reboot fully (normal boot).

Launch Cubase and attempt playback again.

If you're not using Reason or similar ReWire clients, this will prevent Cubase from crashing.
🧷 TL;DR Summary
Error message   Typical cause   Fix
ReWireDLL.cpp(994): Verify Failure   ReWire auto-scan failure (corrupt or mismatched ReWire file)   Remove ReWire components from system/DAW
Windows users with Cubase 5 + ReWire   Outdated ReWire.dll version   Replace with newer build (e.g. from Cubase 6)

🧠 In Short

Your freeze is very likely due to a ReWire scan failure.

The standard solution is removal of the ReWire extension/VLL/cll from your OS and Cubase directories.

If you eventually want ReWire functionality, you’d need a compatible version of ReWire engine rebuilt or reinstalled—but on OS 9 that’s quite complex.

an empty folder called Rewire can prevent (most) installers to add an (unwanted) rewire extension (which is often the cause of unavailable rewire channels in cubase/nuendo)
