It's a Mac G4 MDD single 1.25GHz with 1Gb of RAM and two harddrives, each put on a different bus with an ATI graphic card, don't know which model.

I just did again an reinstall of the OS, this time i used the Firewire target mode with my eMac on Tiger but Cubase just doesn't seem to be happy.

I did an virus scan with Virex and it didn't find any.

I'll try to download the Cd image of Cubase from here and burn it to CD to try to install Cubase again.

Have you tried other apps on the same computer? Any funny happenings with other software.
Try some of the programs like - video, graphics, or other audio programs etc see if they
play up as well. I know that Cubase 5.1r1 and Cubase 5.2pb are pretty solid programs.

if u at any time installed cubase from the cd itself this would result in this wierd behaviour
as noted by mactron in a precious thread
classic case of a messed up authorization he said (or something similar to that)

This is a clear symptom of a cubase bad registration. It happened to me dozens of times.

Reinstall Cubase 5.1. Make sure the correct version Installation CD is on the CD drive: VST 5.1/ VST 5.1 Score or 5.1 VST 32,  depending on which Cubase version you'll go to install.

I installed Logic Audio Platinum 4 from here
https://www.adrive.com/public/QtSn6v/Logic_v4.sea.bin

and it seems to work. I'm kinda relieved, i hope it's only a software problem.

I'll just downloaded and burned the Cubase image from here and will try to authorize with that Cd and the Cubase 5.1 net-installer.

Thanks Chris for the hint also i erased now multiple times the harddrive i can't think of being it the problem. We'll see...

-Intel Core2 Duo machine with 4Gb on WindowsXP/Windows7 dual boot OS.

u are trying with both interfaces? usb tascam? and firewire edirol fa-101? why not just try with one to test + make sure the problem doesnt stem from using both usb + firewire drivers at the same time?
are u sure the problem you are having isnt due to ASIO driver? what are the symptoms ?

The symptom was that after a fresh install of cubase with both, the 5.1 and the 5.2 installer from the steinberg website using the cubase cd i have for authorizing, the audio engine just stops working as soon as i stop the playback of a demo song and want to RESUME the playback. As you already mentioned a good idea is to isolate things so i left everything unconnected (both soundcards) and just tried with the built-in one of my g4 tower, so only using the soundmanager driver.
The behaviour stayed the same. As soon as i stop and resume the playback the audio engine of cubase stops working.

I finally installed Logic Audio 4 from the downloadings from this forum and it seems to work good. i didn`t have any demo song at hand for Logic so i loaded a plug-in instrument and recorded some notes and tried to break the engine with stopping and resuming the playback. Logics audio engine was running stable so it had to do with the installation of cubase as hardware seemed to work ok.

Of course i raised the memory assignment to 400k of both Cubase and Logic as suggested here on the forum.

I finally downloaded the cubase cd image from here and burned it to Cd and tried another install and guess what...IT`S WORKING!

I installed already the drivers for the Edirol soundcard and the demosong is running fine and i can`t achieve to stop the audio engine anymore with stopping and resuming the playback...HURRAY!

So my guess for the reason of the problem is a faulty CD i had of the Cubase CD. I have it since many years and actually made a copy some time ago because the first one had reading problems. I think that the copy protection used for Cubase was not authorizing well using this CD.

So my recommendation is: Don't rely on old CD copys. It`s better to support this great website and donate some money to Diehard so that we can always get good backups of the software we like so much.

Thanks to all.

yea it sounds to me like this was a faulty authorization because i have never experienced a problem like that
with logic i had a problem similar to that when i had more then 1gb of ram installed.. a very similar problem ocurred in that it wouldnt play in the main timeline but the edit windows for parts woudl play fine.

im very glad that u have got your setup working solid like it should be;) awesome;) now lets move forward together;)
