Hi from Spain
« on: May 12, 2025, 07:15:40 AM »

Hi everyone, I'm here with the intention of getting my old PowerMac G4 MDD DP 1.25 up and running, and maybe getting my old Macintosh LC475 working again.

Best regards.

Hello and a warm welcome ivimail!

“We” do speak MDD (in many various configurations) around here.
And probably a bit of some LC475 too.

Just had my G4 MDD DP 1.25 GHz booted here yesterday. :)

Glad to read that. My PowerMac is actually working now, but I need to find answers about macOS 9's multi-CPU capability and try to find a working macOS 9 installer for that machine, in spanish. I don't have the original disc. I made a copy-and-paste install from what I suspect is a PowerBook image, but everything seems to be working.

I also plan to replace the SCSI drive on the LC475 with one of those MicroSD adapters.

Ahh, just had a similar topic here regarding MDD OS Install Disc set downloads.
https://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=7518.msg58193#msg58193

And while OP didn’t report what was finally used, it was suggested that the first
two downloads noted from:
https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/power-mac-g4-software-install-restore
...might best be used. As for Spanish versions / conversions, I can think of at
least two of our current resident Spanish members, may assist you with that.

As for the multi-CPU (multi-processing) features of the MDD, very few apps
actually make any use of that specifically. So, up to your personal discretion.

And a MicroSD in an LC475?
Again, others more likely to respond / help.

My main question about the multi cpu on os9 is if it works as is or if I need any enabler/extension. This is because a few days ago I used cinebench (I don't remember what version) and I could execute all of the benchmarks except the multi cpu one, that was disabled.

It's obvious that OS9 runs great on a single G4, but if I can also have support for multiple CPUs...

Which exact version of Cinebench did you use / run? So that I might run the same version on my stock 1.25 GHZ DP MDD later today or tonight - AND also review my installed extensions too, for comparison.

AND are you running OS 9 / OS 9.2 from an HDD, SSD, or etc.?

Likely that your results may differ anyway, as you're using OS 9 "copied" from a PowerBook?
We shall see.

I recently ran Cinebench 2000 on a 1.5GHz G4 Mac mini here as Cinebench 2003 didn't seem to want to run.

I'm using Cinebench 2000 and 2023 with OS 9.2.2 and in both cases the "Rendering xCPU" is disabled.

I just attached the screenshots because I'm writing this from Classilla and I don't have available the rich editor.

I think this is one of the problems I'm getting with this version of OS9 because I don't know what rom version I should have, I tried with another (I don't remember) and OS9 won't boot.

Probably time to reinstall OS 9.2.2 for the MDD - instead of that PowerBook OS you have. AND any further posts in this vein, perhaps time to begin a new topic elsewhere? (Most likely under “Software” should you wish to continue after this post.)

Und yes, this MDD does have a “Multiprocessing” folder which contains “Apple CPU Plugins” within the Extensions folder. Which you likely don’t have with the “copy & paste” Powerbook config.

I ran both Cinebench 2000 and 2003 and will attach screenshots below.

This MDD here is kept pretty much stock… using an old spinning HD and likely the original ATI Radeon 64 MB video card - so don’t really expect to be all that impressed with the results. BUT it did run Cinebench 2003, so I may go back and test again with the 1.5 GHz mini (for another project here in progress). So, thanks for that. [It just seemed to freeze or just stop with the mini, when it actually does take much more time to completely test.]

And again, begin a new topic perhaps under “Software” after this post to continue. Thanks. :)

Yes, I was thinking about this.

Can you tell me what is the correct image for this MDD and how can I get it working in spanish?

Bienvenido.

Welcome.

Don't install it in Spanish because there are many things about plug-ins and DAWs that don't work if you don't install the American version, for example. I think Protools 5 did weird things if you installed it in Spanish. I don't recommend it, unless you have a lot of SCSI printer/scanner equipment and absolutely need ñ. Almost everyone here used the version with the latest Apple ROM and extensions cooked up by DieHard and Mactron. There's also a version that works for G4s with FireWire 800 and another for Mac Minis. Although I'm crazy about the Instant DAW that DieHard prepared with hundreds of authorized plug-ins that restores with SSDs (and even HDDs) in minutes, and on top of that (hours and hours of manual installation if you don't use it) I install Logic and Protools because the image is prepared for G4s + M-Audio AP2496 + Cubase. You have a great system in minutes instead of days.

If you're a ProTooler, you'll install user collections. I set up mine for LE, and other users have cooked up another one for TDM, both ProTools 4 and 5.

According to the guru MacTron, Finder is barely ready for a dual processor, and I think Finder is almost the same with a G3 as it is with a G4.

MacTron recommends single-core Xserve G4 processors in MDDs. With the 1.42 or 1.33, it has reached close to 2 GHz.

It's also important to know which DAW or software you're going to use, because many barely support dual cores. ProTools ignores  dual processors up to ProTools 7, which is from Mac OS Tiger. Logic 4, 5, and 6 use Altivec (G4) and a dual processor. I don't know about CuBase. Some video programs that MacTron recommended with a G4 did on-the-fly video editing, and it wasn't Final Cut Pro or Premiere. QuickTime runs better on a dual processor, if I recall correctly. Look for a post by MacTron, our favorite Galician, about Altivec and a dual processor, which is priceless.

Hi, I installed OS9 on my MDD a while ago, but I think I removed the multiprocess folder from the System Folder. To get it working in Spanish, I installed it from a G4 GE, then swapped the macOS ROM for the one found here at Macos9lives in the MDD installer.

As for the LC475, I'm using bluescsi V1.1, and I'm very happy with it.
