Still 32 active bits!
It is the same data stream that goes out to S/PDIF or AES/EBU digital outputs (via CoreAudio) and that I will be listening to on external DAC!
but that can´t be, at one point the float format must be converted to int in order to pass it to a s/d converter.

Where does the float format and extra 16 bits is introduced in the case of that particular app? I am streaming 16 bit fixed without any math involved. It's a CD rip.
Are you saying that in CoreAudio fixed is always converted to float and then back to fixed when going out to S/PDIF?

you will have to decide if you want to test it or not. no test, no evidence. :)

I trust my eyes and tools I'm using. I see stuff that's not supposed to be there. That's enough evidence for me. ;)

P.S. If you want, you can have it. Test it for yourself. 10.10+

you are trying to build an "OS9 audiophile" setup by playing 16 bit files from OSX and trust a free japanese measuring tool more than math or the coreaudio docs. that already overwhelms me.

coreaudio can transport 16 bits as is, too - as far as i know - but that some app shows active bits of a stream which doesnt exist is only a phenomen of that specific setup.

and if you think that the conversion of 16 bits to 32 and back to 16 involves loss of precision for some reasons not explainable with maths, then use a CD player. but one without digital volume control. :)

C'mon, IIO, TL;DR?  :D

It's a commercial app:

More info in Japanese:

I've measured it with two tools, that the rest of the world is also using for looking at active bits.
One of those is free:

The other is not:

** Spark XL 2.80 **

This is - so far - the best I've found... It's stable. Supports "playlists". Supports AIFF, WAV, and probably a few other formats, BUT NOT mp3.

I just brought an Edirol FA-101 and have been looking for the same thing on Mac OS 9, a way to play music with ASIO. With SPARK XL 2.50 I´m able to play mp3´s, so you also have that option.
