I dug out an old IEEE 1394-1995 Dual Firewire card-bus that I used to use with my G3 Pismo and tried it with my G4 Ti PowerBook. 

It mounts on the desktop but doesn't seem to work in terms of connecting to any drives. 

The Card-bus claims to not need any drivers under Mac OS9 and I certainly don't recall needing to add anything extra on the Pismo, just plug and play (was a long time ago though...)

Under the System Profiler it sees it as:

Card name: cardbus
Card model: TXN,PC11410-02
Crad ROM#: Not Available
Card Revision: 2
Card Vendor ID: 104C

"Compliant with IEEE 1394-1995, 1394a-2000 and OHCI standards"

Are there any specific Extensions that need to be "on" or added to get these things to work?

There are two extensions that are needed for FireWire to work. Make sure they are both version 2.8.7, which is the latest.

• FireWire Enabler
• FireWire Support

Thanks for that, was on 2.8.6 on both of these so have updated them.

Am I right in thinking that all Firewire devices connected to theses card-buses need their own power source?  I thought some did and some didn't?  The drives and burners I have here connect fine to the card-bus and mount to the desktop but all seem to need additional power

Sadly, CardBus FireWire cards don't provide power on their own.

If you want to power devices through FireWire, you will have to provide the power somewhere else in the FireWire chain. I've had success using an old FireWire iPod charger. The CardBus card connects to the device(s) you want to use, which then connect to the iPod charger at the far end of the chain.
