If you really want to push the limits, you can buy a Razer Naga mouse (new or used):

I will be very curious if USB Overdrive or the mouse gives up first on possible configuration  -afro-

A darn good candidate for a modern mouse on OS9

Under $20 US

5-button
1. left click
2. right click
3. middle click
4. side 1 click
5. side 2 click
~~~~~~~~~~
6. pointer finger double tap
7. Scroll up / down
8. LED light show preset button
9 -10. Mouse DPI output up and down
pasted a quick systems check
gonna put it into the PT5.1.3 Rig and see what happens
If you are into trackballs the modern wired usb kensington expert mouse works flawlessly under usb overdrive. All 4 of the buttons and the scroll wheel work. The wireless usb version might work as well but i have never tried mine on an old mac. Its expensive but its an extremely high quality and smooth trackball.
