I cannot for the life of get mac os 8 (any version) to install on my g3 tower. I've tried 8, 8.1 8.5 and 8.6. It will not boot from the cd and if i use software restore in os 9(that installs fine). i've tried pressing C and that doesnt work either. The startup control panel has the mac os 8 cd greyed out so i cant boot from it.I looked up on everymac my serial # and it says 8.1 to 10.3 supported on this G3. Any thoughts?

Have you tried restarting with the install CD already in the tray, holding down the Option key?
That might allow you to select the install disc at startup, from a version of OS 8.

Yes I have done that. I decided to try something I copied all files from os 8 cd to a hdd that I just formatted and copied MAC OS ROM from 9 install to 8 hdd. It boots now. I am in os 8.6. Strange huh

B&W G3 Rev. 1 requires Mac OS 8.5+
Rev. 2 requires 8.6+
