ADAT Analog Expansion — Timeline

ADAT is the timeless standalone way to bring more channels into the limited selection of converters available to Mac OS 9 — including converters that predate the Mac OS 9 era and hardware released long after it. Unlike building a full Pro Tools MIX rig, the converter itself does not have to be supported by Mac OS 9: the computer only needs an ADAT-capable interface.

this is just begging for a list with suggestions for the bridging interface.

the prerequisite to use "modern" or "better" interfaces in addition to or bridged by a MacOS9-supported interface can be outlined like so:

 - you want to use an interface with good driver and mixer software for MacOS9 (because otherwise it is not worth it to add high quality converters)

 - it should have ADAT lightpipe in and out

 - the bridging interface must have a full featured standalone mode

 - the interface you want to add should be configurable (once or multiple times) by an operating system which you also have access to in your house (or be configurable by its own frontend)

stadalone mode is something which many interfaces already do not offer, for the example the motu 828 can not do that - otherwise it would be the perfect "adapter" since you can get one for 25 bucks.

the three major candidates which fullfill all requirements are:

 - digi 002

 - 828 mk II

 - RME PCI (all models with ADAT - these do not require to have a standalone mode to work as adat bridge! including the PCI-only systems!)
 
 
if you always work with the same samplerate and take care of the right boot order, you can of course use the clock of the better interface to clock the bridge using wordclock.


Q: are there OS9 interfaces which have more than one lighpipe input? (like some new motus have?)
