I had several CD reading errors in the past. It didn't have the stock drive when I bought my B&W second-handed, though. I replaced the faulty drive, which worked fine on the PC I tried, with a LG DVD RAM and the machine will not even boot. Only after removing the ZIP drive everything worked fine and I could finally read CDs with no problems (and also DVDs).

i read some funky stuff about master/slave settings on the b&w g3...
the zip drive has to be set with a jumper specifically to the slave setting otherwise the cd wont be able to be bootable + take over the master setting
ie: cable select is not good enuff.. having the cd set to master and the zip set to cable select is not good enuff.. zip must be set to slave..
and cd to master.. but.. i could be wrong:D i read alot of crap its all a jumbled mess now :D

Do you still have 128 MB of RAM installed? This is when I have found OS 8 to be much faster, on memory-limited systems. It's up to the user whether or not less need for resources = "better". For instance, I have a PowerBook which is a really nice machine, but has a horrible addressing ceiling of IIRC an absolute max of 64 MB. It was so slow as to be unusable under OS 9, but 8.6 is fairly comfortable for light-duty use.

I'd recommend around 512 MB to run OS 9 comfortably, but it can work ok with less. Most Mac towers since the mid-90s and all New World units can be so upgraded.

no i have 1gb installed in 4 x 256MB double sided sdram chips.. pc100 in the b&w g3. and 4x 256mb pc133 in the sawtooth G4 450
both running mac os 8.6

Could it be that these machines function better with less RAM??
i have read this before from a few forum posts so your post is not a suprise to me.
it may be possible that the older os were built using legacy code that was not designed to make use of such amounts of ram.

i read that studio vision by opcode has issues with using the later more powerful G4s + OS9.. and that it runs better on mac os 8.6
so im glad to have 2 computers that are both 450mhz and both run mac os 8.6.. the last macs to ever allow running that os in fact..

a bit of offtopic : funny u say 64mb this is the exact amount i have now in my pentium III Running windows 3.11 + cubase score 1.03d :) and it runs awesome
midi only.. but its working great with only 64mb of ram... i think there is alot of unneccsary time + energy spent on maximizing ram + cpu speed to be honest
i think the time + energy would be of far greater value put into actually creating with the software... the fact that i can have so much fun jamming with just a GM MIDI yamaha synth + windows 3.11 + cubase score 1.03d from 1993 .. 64mb of ram!! to be honest it would run the same on a 486 DX2 66 i think.. but thats enough windows talk ....

the true beauty lies with what u can do with the software...

anyway back to macs + ram...
ram requirements from back in the system 8 days were far less..
we forget that the first mac with a g3 cpu shipped with only 32mb of ram STANDARD running mac os 8.0
and the first blue + white g3 shipped with only 64mb of ram  STANDARD running mac os 8.5.1

lets examine the history, brief recap of standard ram & original shipped OS

http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g3/specs/powermac_g3_233_dt.html 32MB RAM | OS 8.0
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g3/specs/powermac_g3_233_mt.html 32MB RAM | OS 8.0
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g3/specs/powermac_g3_233_aio.html 32MB RAM | OS 8.0
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g3/specs/powermac_g3_300_bl.html 64MB RAM | OS 8.5.1
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g3/specs/powermac_g3_350_bl.html 64MB RAM | OS 8.5.1 (revision shipped 128MB & 8.6)
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g3/specs/powermac_g3_450_bl.html 128MB RAM | OS 8.6
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g4/specs/powermac_g4_400.html 64MB RAM | OS 8.6
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g4/specs/powermac_g4_450.html 128MB RAM | OS 8.6 (revision shipped with 256MB & 8.6)
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g4/specs/powermac_g4_500.html 256MB RAM | OS 8.6
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g4/specs/powermac_g4_1ghz_dp_qs.html | 512MB RAM | OS 9.2.2

so here we see how quickly the ram changed from very low requirements ramping upwards
256mb was the max any mac os 8 system shipped with
256mb was also the ammount that most systems that shipped with mac os 9 installed came with untill the dual 1ghz quicksilver which
doubled the ram to 512mb
even the most powerful MDD originally shipped with only 512MB RAM!
even my powermac g5 1.8ghz single cpu model shipped with only 512MB RAM

of course these were days long before extensive javascript was common in browsers :D

the first wallstreet g3 power books:
