i just compared the write speed specs from my 2008 imac's 8X DL "SuperDrive" to that of the very newest Apple USB "SuperDrive"
and the specs are virtually identical. with 7 years inbetween the release of the drives they are virtually identical

8x DL "SuperDrive" (imac 2008)
24x cd-r
16x cd-rw
8x dvd+r
8x dvd-r
8x dvd+rw
6x dvd-rw
4x dvd+r dl*
dvd-r dl not mentioned but its probably 4x

Apple USB "SuperDrive" (2014)
24x cd-r
16x cd-rw
8x dvd+r
8x dvd-r
8x dvd+rw
6x dvd-rw
6x dvd+r dl*
6x dvd-r dl

as u can see the 2014 edition only enhancement is burning dvd+r dl at 6x instead of 4x
(and this is probably due to the media and not the drive i bet)
otherwise its the exact same as my drive in my imac from 7-8 years ago.
since the end of 2005 i think dvd burners havent changed much
if u know of a way that they have.. please post!

superdrives began in the digital audio + quicksilver series with a 2x superdrive..
