Using Digi 002 as a Stand-Alone Mixer
In addition to its function as an integrated front end and control surface for Pro Tools, Digi 002 can
operate as a stand-alone digital mixer in a variety of settings. Figure 9 shows Digi 002 as the hub of a
small studio setup, with analog audio, digital audio, and MIDI connections. Figure 10 shows Digi 002
in a small live performance setup.
See Chapter 5, “Connecting Your Studio” for details on analog audio and MIDI connections, and see
“Digital Audio Connections in Stand-Alone Mode” on page 85 for details on making digital audio
connections to Digi 002

Post by: supernova777 on December 16, 2014, 03:34:22 AM
important to note that unforunately i believe that :
the DIGI 002 *RACK* model is NOT COMPATIBLE with Mac os 9
this model REQUIRES JAGUAR 10.2.x & PRO TOOLS LE 6.1.2

i guess i will have to delete this item from our list of compatible devices
i cant believe i didnt catch this untill now!

Correct.

If you look in the digidesign archive, under product compatibility you find this under the Digi 002 section: "Digi 002 Rack is not supported on Mac OS 9".

Technically you dont need the whole cd. Just the driver part. I dont believe they made a special version of protools just for the 002. As far as i can remember i have a archive for the 002 somewhere on my drives.

add: http://archive.digidesign.com/download/002/

look at the whole thing you might need the dae

but thats exactly what it is..  you do need to use that specific version if u choose to use mac os 9 as your os.

I am a believer. 002 needs a PT 5 special version and a DAE exclusive. 002 supported 88.2 and 96 kHz of sampling rate, also, not suported on 001 and AM-3 PT versions

Also, to make the mixer-controller part there should be a special driver.

At least we can see what the disc looks like now!

the disc came with the digi 002 .. the problem is, they probably repackaged the digi 002 and it only shipped with ones that were in the 'first batch' because they later shipped it with only versions of PT 6.X ... and even if they had the first batch, its rare to find someone that kept their stuff altogether unless they bought it and literally stored it in a closet for 15 years and forgot about it.

his start bid is 200. he is shooting for the sky. you better come up with a convincing story.

i think i know why they made a special version for it because you cant use it combined with any other digi or now avid hardware. means no tdm setup combined with the 002

look at it this way. you got that nice mixer with motorized faders called 002. why shouldnt you be able to use it with a tdm rig wich powers effects and whatever else.you should be able to use it for whatever you please.

i would think it might work as a control surface with a tdm rig..!!
i will look into that + see if i can find anything on that subject!

I think it can't work with tdm rigs. For that thing is the HUI, MotorMIX, Peavey, ProControl and the Command8

I think they blocked the possibility to sell more controllers.

002 is resisting!  >:(  :(

Chris, having already a 001, you should look for a FW TASCAM on eBay. They sound awesome, are supported from 9 to snow leo and can work as HUI, Or Logic Control or anything aside of been a great sound card. Just use it in paired with your 001 or your M-Box and you have that HUI part in a setup with 16 Inputs or 10 Inputs with M-Box!

FW-1884 is the best
(http://tascam.com/content/images/universal/products/229/main.jpg)
http://tascam.com/product/fw-1884/ (http://tascam.com/product/fw-1884/)

FW-1082 is the same but SPDIF instead of ADAT

hmm it could work but the digi 001 has no wordclock in or out
then again neither does the digi 002
but i guess it the digi 001 would slave to the tascam via the adat optical toslink

the 1082 is not compatble with mac os 9.. u should know this;)

I know the 1884 works. An that is perfect. Load a cubase for the FW to take 8 Ins and send it to 001 and use PT with 16 ins or Use PT with 8 Aux and work in Cubase

u mean on another computer? in osx..? thats not very efficient;) power consumption wise

i like that the FW-1804 has inserts on 4 of the inputs.. and these signals route to the adat out
very cool, plus this 1804 interface is newer. like 2006.. and it may be the most modern peice of gear
(production date wise) to support mac os 9

Well, I downloaded, installed on my Pismo powerbook running OS9.2.2, but no joy at all...

When I press "Setup hardware" on digidesign control panel, I consistently get a "Digidesign hardware is currently in use by another application".

When I try to launch PTLE 5.3.2, after the herd of annoying authorization screens, it consistently crashes with a type 3 error.

OMS setup crashes with error 1010.

I have been juggling all evening with extensions, but so far I have gotten nowhere. Drat.

this version is only for use with that specific hardware unit.

are u sure u dont have the ASIO or WAVE driver installed for using the digi 002 with cubase / logic / live or other ASIO apps? (which would take control of the device leaving it unavailable to pro tools)

maybe try this old faq

did u follow the proper procedure for starting up the computer?

2  Connect FireWire drive(s) to the computer.
3  Connect Digi 002 to FireWire drive(s) or to second FireWire port on the computer.
4  Power on the computer.
5  Once the computer is up, turn on the FireWire drives.

FireWire 2.5 and 2.4 Extensions
Digi 002 requires v.2.5 of the Apple FireWire extensions found in Mac OS 9.2.2 North American Edition. At the time of shipment, some non-English versions Mac OS 9.2.2 include v.2.4 of the Apple FireWire extensions. For Digi 002 to work, v.2.5 of the FireWire Extensions must be installed. You can download v.2.5 of the FireWire extensions at www.info.apple.com/support/downloads.html

I started in the order prescribed (I was doing it the other way around), but that changes nothing.
There was a previous installation of ProTools free 5.01 on this computer. I guess I'll have a  "search and destroy" party tomorrow...

but now I'm signing off.

yes u cant have pt free installed
there is an application for removing it i think.. 'digidesign uninstaller' i think its called

it should be on the pt le cd.. run it first before installing.

read here

i think the important thing to do is to trash the DAE + DSI files + folders + then reinstall 5.3.2 once u have eiminated all of the pro tools related files + Extensions

This morning I believe I have zapped all traces of former ProTools free and reinstalled PTLE 5.3.2. Still no joy.
But I have found this little bit on the internet:

Q:
Pro Tools does not recognize my Digi 002. I have a non-English version of Mac OS 9.2.2

A:
Users with a non-English Mac OS may have later versions of the FireWire extensions that do not have a particular feature found in the v.2.5 or later North American version - callback at interrupt priority - this is required in order for Digi 002 FireWire drivers to load. Additionally, some versions of the Mac OS may not even allow the customer to use the older 2.5 North American Versions. The customer must download the FireWire developer kit from Apple's web site. The Apple FireWire developers kit includes version 2.8.1 of the extensions. This should work with any OS. The link is ftp.apple.com the package is extracted go into the FireWire 2.8.1 SDK>Extensions>FW Extensions>FireWire 2.8.1 (TM)> and copy these 2 extensions over what is currently loaded in the system (be forewarned that the names may be different with different languages but the icons will always be the same)

I happen to run a french-canadian OS9.2.2....
Trying to find the mentionned "FireWire developer kit". Of course the link to it is dead, as can be expected of Apple. On the Pismo I have the french-canadian version "FU1-2.8.5" and on my DA (my main studio's 001 system) I have "FU1-2.8.7". Will try a transplant, but I'd really want to find the 2.8.1 versions mentionned.

HA!!
it is working!
I have replaced my firewire extensions with english 2.8.7 versions.
I have registered PT with my registration nr. I got from my PTLE 5.1.1 (that came with my DIGI001) install CD beginning with DIGI0510......

I am successfully running the "Be There" demo, CPU load about 30%.
Still have big problems with OMS. I just tried opening the "OMS MIDI setup" from the Setups menu, and it crashed PT. I still get 1010 error trying to run OMS setup.

The PT control panel is working OK.

Big progress! After barely a day of frobnication!

he he,
I have found the disk for the Firewire 2.8.1 SDK on Macintosh Garden:
http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/apple-developer-connection-software-seed-cd-rom-april-2001
I will download it as soon as I'm near a fast internet connection...
Right now what is not going too well is the transfer of my RTAS plugins from my DA to the Pismo.

Hey!
I'm back after a week of seeking an occasion to download the old Firewire extensions. Rather stupid situation of having to download a 450M package for two measly drivers totalling 370K. Especially since it does not work!!. After installing the two 2.8.1 drivers, my Digidesign hardware could not be found... So I reverted back to the 2.8.7 drivers. I also upgraded my DAE to version 5.3.2cs2.

Now for more fun: every time I start ProTools on this system, it nags me with the following message:"The firmware on the DIGI 002 does not match the current version. Would you like to download the current version? etc.". The 002 is running system firmware 1.21, which I believe is the latest version. Will this "download" operation is just gonna downgrade me to the "current" version ProTools 5.3.2 is aware of? should I do it?

I also have issues with plug-ins. I started to transplant plug-ins I have on my main studio's DA/DIGI001/ProTools LE 5.2.1 system, but they don't work anymore (channel strip, amongst others). I even downloaded RTAS plug-ins from this site, but still no joy.
I'm starting to wonder if all that iLock shit is interfering: I have none of this on my studio rig...
What exactly is that iLock/interLock stuff used for on a PT5.3.2 LE setup?

sorry if I have more questions than answers...

Ha!
late-breaking news: I have apparently resolved my OMS crashing problem!
I have removed the "FW-1804 OMS driver" I had in my OMS folder. Since this is a Firewire device, looks like it was interfering with the 002 OMS driver... Now I can configure OMS with the 002.

Download the firmware, it's standard practice on the Digidesign hardware. I need to upgrade or downgrade the firmware of my Pro Control when I go from Pro Tools TDM 5.1.3 to 6.4.1 for instance.

It will upgrade the firmware if you use a newer version of Pro Tools LE with your 002, and downgrade the firmware if you use an older version.

I let it download the firmware. Quite ludicrous, if you ask me: it takes almost 12 minutes, downgrades the system to 1.04 (!), faders to 1.05, and boot to 1.00. Then hangs.

wow thats really crappy if thats the case...  :-[ :-[

perhaps u can figure out which plugins are not compatible?
does this mean its incompatible with every protools plugin on macos9lives? they are only compatible with 001/amIII/TDM?

this makes no sense.. mbox uses pt5.2.1 and that one is compatible isnt it?

is it the plugins that is causing your system hang? does the entire os crash?

I sorta understand now why the DIGI 002 package included a truckload of "free" plugins...

My system works fine, but only with the stock plugins. Just to complicate matters, I decided to install Soft SampleCell. Now my other plugins show up on the list, but they all give me a DAE error -9065 when I try to insert them on a channel. Aside from the stock ones, the only plugin that works is AmpliTube, and that's because it's a "HD RTAS". I will continue to try and see if others work, but be patient: it will take some time...

As for PT5.2.1, that's what I use on my studio's DA, with a 001. All is fine...

when i hear this i think of Digidesign doing this on purpose to get everyone to pay to upgrade their plugins.... its the only thing that makes sense, as to why there would be any incompatibility.

That's what I think also. And that sucks Big Time, my friend!
So we're back on the hunt for the plugins CDs that originally came with the 002. Maybe from where you got the PT 5.3.2?
That or some brave fella starts looking at the PT 5.3.2 code to see where it hurts...

That thread that's linked has conflicting info... the first guy says...

"Assuming that you're using OS9, the plugins should work. I exchanged my 001 for the 002 and use all my old plugins."

"I installed the PTLE software that came with my 002, and PTLE found the plugins without any problems"

THAT'S encouraging, but the second dude says that they're incompatible because...

"DAE is a DLL with PT version 5.3 and later."

We know that (according to Digi) 5.3.2 ONLY works on the 002 with the mixing console and NOT the rack version SOOO... my guess is that most people miss that little tid bit of info and lump all 002's together, claiming that the plugs won't work for their 002 (rack)!

I'm HOPING that there's confusion due to most people having 'mix and match' OS9-OSX... PT 5-6 and trying to install mismatched stuff and not being aware of the 002(R) exclusion!! :o

It certainly WOULD suck if indeed the OS9 plugs won't work with 002(mixer) but I agree that it doesn't make whole lotta sense if that's the case. I guess we'll find out!! ;D

nice package there.. i had no idea

btw..
did u install any of the 5.3.2 updates?

i think u said u installed this firmware already?
http://download.digidesign.com/support/digi/mac/controllers/002_532cs1.hqx
so perhaps u have already installed the updates too?
theres a readme pdf in there too.. maybe check it out?

i noticed on this page:
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/download/en365031
that they have a different version of the mp3 option for every single
version of PT!!! (Wtf!!) maybe theres some type of codes embedded
that authorize the plugin to work with that version *Shrug*

Yes. as mentionned in earlier post, I have DAE 5.3.2cs2 installed. I also had the latest 002 firmware (1.21) installed, but that gets bumped to 1.04 by PT 5.3.2's insistance.

I have tried various plug-ins from this site. I sadly report that the only ones that work are the T-Racks.

here are the ones that I tried:
Channel strip
LA-2A
1176
Drwner Dynamics
Echo Farm
LexiVerb
Focusrite D2
Focusrite D3
Fairchild 660
JOEMEEK Compressor
Pultec EQP-1A
Tel-Ray delay

Furthermore, a good number of them don't even show on the pulldown plugin list.

Now, I have serious doubts about the plugins on this site: a fair number of them, once decompressed, show garbled names and/or no icons. whether they've been decompressed in OSX or OS9...

the plot thickens.

its possible there was some type of mistake made... thats why its important for people to speak up and share this info
or to use the "Report to moderator" function + communicate that something is wrong!

but its also possible that the error is caused by your own doing..
mac os is tricky disco compared to other os' there are definately strange things that can occur even to the best pro mac'intosher.. wrong versions.. or corrupted files...

i havent experienced any garbled names, but i have seen some of the pt plugins have no icons!

To be clear: when I say those plugins don't work, I mean they don't work with PT LE 5.3.2, with the DIGI 002.

but then,
Drawner Dynamics
Echo Farm
LexiVerb
Focusrite D2
Focusrite D3
Fairchild 660
don't work on my PT LE 5.2.1 cs1/digi 001 rig either....

It's getting extremely confusing, and hard to know, as to which variety of RTAS you're dealing with... the PT free type, PT 5.2.1 or PT 5.3.2 types???...
I did not expect to find such a can of worms.

unfortunately the people who organized + posted the plugins were somewhat inexperienced with the plugins..
and had no way of telling which are LE compatible and which are TDM only
the plugins u have described as not working are undoubtedly TDM only plugins or they are the specific TDM version of the plugin.. (LE version withstanding and MIA for the moment untill we rally the troops!)

u are however being of great help to everyone else and helping us to make sure that we can specify these things so that other people dotn make the same mistake twice.

they could have easily used a different versioning scheme.. ie 2.001 3.001 4.002 but that would be too easy to figure out without getting lost on their website for 2 years
