Title: New App for MacOS 9 --- OSM, BlueSky and Mastodon
Post by: yllan on June 25, 2026, 01:38:29 AM
Hello Forum,

Please allow me to do a bit of self-promotion here for programs I’ve been developing recently. It’s an experiment to help Mac OS 9 connect with the modern internet environment, building on the hard work of those who came before me.

First of all, because Mac OS 9 does not have a modern crypto library, it cannot connect to modern TLS services. I referred to the mbedTLS OS9 port and created a library called ClassicNet that supports HTTP/2.

OS9Map (https://yllan.org/software/OS9Map/) uses this library to allow Macs to connect to OpenStreetMap, as well as search for addresses and POIs.

The next step is unicode. Unicode on OS9 is not well supported. To render a big part of Internet, I created ClassicText for emoji.

PlatinumSky (https://yllan.org/software/PlatinumSky/) is the OS9 app for BlueSky (https://bsky.app), and
Palaeomastodon (https://yllan.org/software/Palaeomastodon/) is the OS9 app for Mastodon (https://joinmastodon.org/).

Not really helpful for productivity, but it feels nice to connect the old MacOS 9 to the modern internet!
