Title: Unreal Tournument GOTY Not Connecting to any servers
Post by: PrepperGeek on October 01, 2025, 02:29:05 PM
Hi, I have recently installed Unreal Tornument 99, specifically the Game of the year edition, version 436. Ive noticed, that I cannot connect to any servers on the unreal tornument website, even the ones that say they are compatable with version 436. I think this website does have an unreal server, but I kept getting kicked for some reason after entering the lobby.

Im not sure what I am doing wrong, but id appreciate it if I could get any help on the matter.

Servers from which website? I'm going to do a writeup on how to add modern server support to Unreal Tournament, but it will be more or less a copy and paste from here:

https://333networks.com/instructions/ut

Follow it and the server browser will work from within UT again :)

btw, make sure to connect to games.macos9lives.com using Unreal Tournament to play on our server ;)

I see, much appreciated on getting the server page to work, however, i did try the server you provided a couple times, I loaded into the lobby but I got the "connection failed", maybe its because I directly connected to the server, which is what i did to connect to many other servers, theyd load but fail, consistently when it was done loading.

I am going to try setting up the configuration file as the website says to, and ill come report my results.

Thank you

So, I did what the website said to do with the configuration file. However, it is still not working, even the games.macos9lives.com link. The lobby loads but the connection fails(presumably when I join a match), I can hover as a spectator in the chosen map, but I dont see any other players, the map is empty, then the connection fails after 30 ish seconds.

I see the server population, and it shows theres about 800 servers, but the server list screen is blank, and it never finishes loading past the 810 mark.

It appears I have a networking issue, but I cannot tell where, since I am directly plugged into my fiber optic modem through gigabit ethernet, and I am on this website regularly with this machine.

The only two things between this computer and the modem is a poe adapter(to power the modem) and an 8 port gigabit ethernet switch(which has a desktop running windows vista sitting idle, and a 10 year old budget linksys router)

Not sure what it could be, but im open to suggestions.

Great that you got it going! I haven't visited the forum again until now. I would have recommended you do to a full reinstall since something seems a bit off about your install.

Glad it's fixed. See you on the server ;)

Well, it did work, until it didnt. Now it just hangs at the connecting screen, the one where it says "connecting to game.(server)/index.php", I cant even connect to the macos9lives server directly. I installed gamesprocket 1.7.5, and that seems to be the point where it stopped working. At least it loads the server list, but what good is that when i cant even play on any of them.

There is an extra comma between macos9lives and .com. Is that a typo on your side?

even without the typo, its still the same, ill send another pic in case something pops up in the log

So you need to go to Open Location and put in games.macos9lives.com and nothing else like special chars or http or / etc. Just the domain.

I tried to connect to the server just now on two different Mac OS 9 machines here in my house and the server works fine. Just out of curiosity if there was something wrong with it when connecting externally I asked a friend to connect and he can connect and play just fine as well.

So there seems to be something odd with your install. Do you have a working internet connection on the machine? Have you set up your "player" as well as internet connection speed from within UT?

I tried that with that method, it doesnt seem to work for some reason

Can you answer the questions I asked in my post below? It's hard to help you otherwise. Everything is working on the server side of things and other people can use the server.

yes, i set up the player, and the connection speed, my apologies for not responding to that. It seems that its working now, i just restarted the machine a couple times, and it works now, but only on other servers. on the games.macos9lives.com server it loads into the lobby as a spectator, then it says "connection failed" Im starting to think it may be my isp, even though im connected through fiber optic.

Aha. When you're inside it's waiting for your input (press fire) to start the game. If you don't do anything you'll be kicked from the server in 10 seconds time or so.

It didnt work, I cant even get into the lobby area now. maybe its my location? I live in Pennsylvania, maybe its too far from wherever the server is based. But even when the lobby loaded, itd still say "connection failed".

I just tried connecting to the games.macos9lives.com server with version 436 and got "Connection Failed" after about 15 seconds of it showing the "Connecting" screen.

I've also followed the steps on the 333networks page, and was able to download the custom Unreal assets through the games.macos9lives.com server in UT (I forget which ones it said, but there were a few and they all transferred successfully).

It seems to get almost all the way to succesful connection before I get the "Connection Failed" screen. It's not giving me any logs (no files in the Logs folder and the "Show Log" option from the UT main menu does nothing) so I'm not sure where it's failing. I've tried increasing the networking timeouts on my end, but so far no dice.

Hm.... I'll have a look

I found out how to show the log Message Window - from the UT main menu, click the Fullscreen/Windowed button in the upper-right corner of the screen to set the game into windowed mode, then select "Show Log" from the main menu's Tools menubar. The Message Log window should appear somewhere.

I'll try to transcribe my log of connecting to the games.macos9lives.com server, since it's not letting me copy/paste from the log for some reason.

Here's my transcribed log from attempting to join, I had to video it since the Message Log window can't be resized or scrolled (and please let me know if there's forum code to collapse this!):

Also, I was having the issue where I wasn't able to see other UT internet servers via the browser, but I was able to fix by removing the following line from UnrealTournament.ini under the "UBrowserAll" header (since unreal.epicgames.com was resolving to 0.0.0.0, I'm thinking it was preventing the found servers from being displayed):
  ListFactories[0]=UBrowser.UBrowserGSpyFact,MasterServerAddress=unreal.epicgames.com,MasterServerTCPPort=28900,Region=0,GameName=ut

I've tried connecting to other version 436 servers, and while I was able to download the custom assets from each, it wouldn't get past the "Connecting" screen with the white text of the server's address, and would not show the blue "Connecting" text.

At least with directly connecting to games.macos9lives.com, it would show the "connection failed" screen after ~15 seconds of the white-text connection screen with the blue "Connecting" text shown in the lower third of the screen. The screen also flashed a red tint when the blue "Connecting" text appeared, which connecting to the other servers did not do.

I'm going to try to play with the timeout duration settings more, it's definitely an issue on my side and I feel like I'm close to figuring this out...

After reinstalling the UT 99 GOTY edition, I was able to see hundreds of UT servers (about a dozen running version 436) and join and play in the "[DQ] Server". I still keep getting disconnected from the games.macos9lives.com server after it finishes downloading the custom content and holds on the blue "Connecting" text for about 30 seconds.

I've attached my UnrealTournament.ini file (just remove the ".txt"), hopefully it helps someone out there.

I'm in Washington State and get surprisingly good ping to the servers I can connect to, even using the original AirPort wifi. Is there anything I should try on my end?
