Title: GPU / Video Card Paste
Post by: aBc on May 31, 2025, 02:34:50 PM
Mr. Doom & Gloom here…

OR… just more preventive maintenance on 20+ year-old tech.
*Over-abundance of squawk from me about CPU heatsink paste.

What about older video cards that can have heatsinks removed?

Here are five examples. One using what appears to be Arctic Silver.
And two or three, using thermal glue (or whatever that beige glop is).
The yellow one is quite likely a thermal guh-loo. (Glue)

One had no paste whatsoever. :o

At any rate if you can, or are actually capable
... may be time to check into yours?

After all, are we not concerned about reducing heat
and continuing to preserve these vintage machines? ;)

Thanks for the TG Putty link. You think it might
be similar to the beige goo posted above?

And thanks for the reply,
at least one person read the post. ;)

The better solution is arctic silver where there was no thermal pads, and (2) brand new thermal pads of the correct thickness. Usually there are about 4 standard thickness thermal pads for video cards, you just have to research to try to measure the old ones. Also it's so much cheaper to buy thermal pads by the sheet and cut them yourself.

thermal grizzly kryonaut conducts heat way better 12,5 W/m·K > 8,9 W/m·K
in gpu stress tests thermal grizzly was 62,4 °C (gpu) and arctic silver 5 69,5 °C (gpu)

Sounds good, but I would still use thermal pads where they were originally used and use the "better" paste where paste was used.
