Hi!
Wanting to truly max out my 7 card Pro Tools|24 MIX system, so I'm now looking for three DSP Farm cards to go with my current MIX Core and Farm cards.
I'm located in the EU and have a lot of Digidesign hardware laying around (and retro hardware) if anyone is up for a trade. Of course also interested in buying cards.
Hit me up with what you got! :)

whats the possible card combinations?

10 cards max, max 7 MIX cards. The rest can be SampleCell’s DSP Farms or whatever. I have enough samplers, so DSP Farms (the generation of cards before the MIX cards) is what I’m after :)

I can only find cards on eBay in the US when I look around. Shipping is higher than the actual cards cost. I'm in no kind of hurry, so I'll gladly wait for some cards to come up on the market in the EU :)

actually the max limit of 10 cards is for the original digidesign cable.. I built, many years ago, a cable with 12 positions. my Protools setup uses 1 Core 7 Mix 3 Dsp and a samplecell, it works perfectly. Building that cable took a long time.. I bought original cables, disassembled the connectors, the first time I made a mistake and had to start all over again, you have to be very precise when reassembling.. a lot of work. Do you want to laugh? When I finished the cable I realized that I had mounted 13 positions.. thinking that the Magma card occupied a position I cut one off.. when I assembled everything I realized that I could have mounted 13 cards.. if I hadn't cut it I would have made perhaps the longest cable in the world..

I do have more MIX cards around, but I remember experiencing issues when all of them where in the chassis at the same time. This was maaaany years ago though. I made the link cable myself as well. Very detailed work as you mention.

I even wanted to see the completed DigiTest ;D

Found 3 more MIX Core cards in my stash. Might as well put them inside the chassis and give it a go :)

Can you give instructions how to build that cable?
What chassis is it?

Digitest does not work above 7 cards.. I don't know, it has always given me problems.. maybe it was not written for more than 7 cards. I checked the cards in pairs (a Core and another card) and I ran the Digitest on all the cards individually to make sure they worked (several were discarded, they gave errors). I mounted everything, opened ProTools and loaded 24 tracks occupying almost all the slots of the DSP with TDM.. I ran the song, no blocks.. in fact, on the display of the system used, the PCI bus sector never went beyond 50-60%.. maybe if there were more PCI slots, you could think about 15-16 cards before sending the bus into crash.. put two Magmas in series?? It would be a nice experiment.. The chassis is the classic 13-slot Digidesign.. the cable, many years have passed, I could not teach it.. I'm sorry.

I have the same type of chassis, only mounted in the rack and not sideways like that. No cool lights either ;)

I opted for that position because I wanted the shortest possible VHDCI connection cable between the G4 and Magma. I discovered that the Magma does not have an error recognition system like the SCSI so the longer the cable the more errors can arise. I tried this thing. 1m cable is good enough.. 3m (tested working on SCSI) does not even see the Magma! I put a 30cm, perfect. I replaced the original noisy fans with three silent LED ones. I still have to understand if I always keep the Magma open for the heat that the cards generate (a lot) or for the scenographic effect hihiiii...

my g4 is marathon rack mounted so that wont be a problem, both will be racks :)
try noctuas for the most silent fans. plexiglass top is always an option and will allow for drill holes for fans

great idea the plexiglass! thanks for the advice.. now really powerful and beautiful.. thanks

I absolutely love this. I have some spare DSP cards but located in the US.
