Tested today.
I can play region 2 DVDs with the internal drive of the Pismo.
With an external FW drive, I can play my region 1 DVDs. I tried umpteen times with MacOS Sierra, Mojave, Sonoma ==> no way, whatever the software or drives used.
Back in the days, the levels of protections weren't as tight. I remember I could do that with my iMac in the early 2000s. Doing it again with my Pismo and an old vintage FW DVD player. It can even load DVDs that can't be played/read on a modern computer. I have a few DVDs like that (like 'A Scanner Darkly') which are hard to rip even with DVDFab ! I can play those via OS9 now !!
Fully operational vintage station. Pismo bliss again. :D ;D

Pismo was released February 16, 2000 and discontinued a year later
just about the death of the vhs
that being said i got about 2000 classic english!!! vhs tapes for free 2 months ago and my kids just love watching south park on vhs and a beamer. nothing will come closer to an analog cinema experience at home :D

My QS has a region free DVD drive. RPC1 patched firmware. The good old days :)

There's a patch for the Pismo (from C113 RPC2 to X113 RPC1) but I didn't want to take the risk and potentially ruin the drive (it happens). So the solution with a vintage external player was fine for me.

This is total mystery to me: for weeks I've been able to play any DVD (zones 1,2 and 3) on my external firewire dvd drive (IIFreecom), but since this morning it is asking to change region/zone when I insert a non Zone 2 DVD (with the warning message '4 changes left blah blah') ???? ??? :(
Things I did before this happened: I unplugged the drive in order to test another DVD Drive (LaCie) and that one wasn't region-free: I didn't get any message about changing region, just an error message when I tried to read a non zone 2 DVD. I unplugged it and reverted to the IIFreecom drive => change region message :-[ :-[ Beats me ! Maybe I could/should delete some prefs but I doubt this will solve the issue...
CORRECTION: shutdown, reboot and ...everything back to normal. Can read again any dvd region :o okay, I guess it's part of the ole OS charm, well, it works, that's all that matters
