Title: Can't install OS9 on Clamshell
Post by: vorob on September 24, 2024, 02:03:39 PM
Hey guys,

I recently purchased an iBook Clamshell (M6411 with a 366MHz CPU) to add to my collection. It currently has OS X installed, but I want to install OS 9 on it. After checking online, I found that I need Mac OS 9.0.4. I downloaded the ISO from this link: https://www.macintoshrepository.org/2417-mac-os-9-0-4-cd-en_us.

I burned the ISO to a CD-R using my iBook G4 from 2005. While the Clamshell reads the CD perfectly, it won't boot from it. Holding the 'C' key during startup does nothing, and when I boot with the 'Option' key, the boot menu shows no CD option.

I'm frustrated and not sure what I did wrong. Can anyone help me figure out the issue?

Thanks!

Hi vorob,

Be careful that the information about MacOS 9.0.4 may be a minimum version supported. And back in the days, it may have been a custom 9.0.4 for this model and not the stock 9.0.4 release.

You have 2 possible ways forward. The lazy one is to grab the universal 9.2.2 installer from this forum and install it from a CD you burnt. The other way is to use a 9.1 or 9.2 CD you might have and perform the installation.

Have fun :)
