Title: Complete list of emulators running on Mac OS9 as a host?
Post by: Bolkonskij on March 09, 2024, 07:47:37 AM
Anyone know of one such list? I'm kind of playing with the idea of testing my way on emulators on 9.2 and creating such a list - of course, only if there is none in existence yet.

So far been through Zophar.net (https://www.zophar.net/macintosh.html)'s list that apparently stopped getting updates like 20 years ago? Still, it already contains lots of OSX stuff. The Garden has some stuff, but also a lot seems to be missing - especially older OS9 compatible versions of emulators.

There appears to be a lot of stuff out there, but it's hard to find info on "last versions for OS9", capabilities of the emulators, requirements etc. etc.

Amstrad PCW/Joyce
emulates a PCW, a typewriter disguising as a computer type of machine.

CP/M emulator
emulates the first true micro computer OS.

Horizon
Emulates a BBC 8-bit micro which was successful in Britain and the Commonwealth but not much else I think  (?)

Mac Bochs
if c:\command.com sounds like fun for you, you can run DOS with this emulator. Not as sophisticated as Virtual PC (or even Soft Windows). Comes with FreeDOS but able to do Win 3.1 and 95 too.

Mini vMac
emulates pre-historic versions of the OS. Mac Garden has Mac OS 9 compatible versions, like one for a 128k Mac (http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/mini-vmac-128k-full-sony-dc42-support).

Nostalgia
Emulates Atari ST micros, supposedly more sophisticated than its counterpart Power ST.

Power ST
emulates an Atari ST. Not the Operating System, but the acual hardware including disk drives.

Palm OS Emulator
who wouldn't want to use a complete Palm Organizer on top of Mac OS? Maybe useful to test programs before moving them onto your Palm....

That's a damn good list, but maybe there's a need to update it? I don't know any other or more up to date list of that kind.

This is really damn awesome! Just maybe now it is possible to play Ys II Special on Mac OS 9! (If it wasn't before with VPC etc..)

This is really, really cool, thanks for the effort and for sharing, @Matej!
