My ext. Firewire HDD is not recogized by  MacOS 9 in my G4. Why?

Larger than 128GB partition?

You'll have to give us some more info about the setup.

Does the drive work under OS X on the same Mac?

Built-in FW Bus or PCI FW?

What is the chipset of the enclosure?

…AND: Are OS9 drivers installed on that drive?

That's what I was thinking might be the case. Also I've just had odd occurences of enclosures not liking drives despite the drive being fine, so if this is a "home-made" drive of sorts, that could possibly be the case.

I haven't seen any limits with external drive. And my first external drive was 160 GB Lacie in 15 years ago.
