Is there any way that I can check which driver is installed on a HFS+ HD?

i think it should be all the same version between MacOS 8.1 and the latest disk utility of OSX 10.5.9 - but which version, no idea.

if that is not documented anywhere you could try asking apple in the developer connection forums or watch what disk utility in OSX in doing when instaling OS9 drivers while obeying the process with an FSEvent logger.
