Hi there,
So I figure my first time installing was brute force and while it did go smooth i have some software not acting right and i figure after spinning my wheels awhile i'd start with a clean install of OS9 in case there are any problems from other drivers.. or something i messed up in the program's settings that i can't find and "uninstall / delete"..
So.. i have the disk I used to install the first time.. so my first step was to turn it on.. hold the option key and select the OS9 lives disk.. it boots up and i get a gray screen for awhile.. after some time of not seeing anything but a mouse i get a squeeky duck sound and i can right click and see basic right click options.. but not one icon or a bar across the top.
I also have OSX on a partition (10.4 i think) and of course the existing OS9Lives HD partition that still boots fine, but i want to overwrite / delete / reinstall that partition
i was using this as my reference for installation..

How did you install OS9 the first time? Was it a 9.2.1 from ebay or was it one of ours?
The obvious procedure here is to stop trying to fix what 's not broken. If the OS9 install is working, thank your God and leave it alone!
-
One of yours. It was a disk image I burned myself from a 9.2.2 ISO (i think that's the right version)
-
its been said of course but its always best to keep osx + os9 on their own drives......
and not to access osx partition AT ALL while booted into os9
and also not to access os9 while booted into osx
like tothe point of.. if u need to move files.. email them to yourself.. or put them on a cd or external network location on your network, DO NOT COPY FILES BETWEEN THE TWO
of course u can, but when problems happen. u will remember that you were warned not to!
in my experience its best to just choose one or the other.. either os9 or osx...
dont install both.
its fun + intersting to install both but when u get the dreaded BTREE error.. or other wierdness and booting issues. its NOT FUN to stop working on music + troubleshoot..
easier to just sidestep the problems entirely with the simple strategy i just outlined
-
i was using this as my reference for installation..
http://www.macos9lives.com/mac%20os%209%20lives_003.htm (http://www.macos9lives.com/mac%20os%209%20lives_003.htm)
keep in mind that that page predates the entire forum
and there was alot of other installation sources made available since that
text was written back in 2010? 2011? or whenever diehard wrote that?
-
Does anyone have a link to what would be considered the latest / most correct how too? I've done some searching around.
I saw one that was saying to install OS9 "In" OSX and I'm pretty sure I don't want that.. I really don't want OSX but it was there when I bought it and I figure it was helpful when OS9 video drivers were acting up and for the time being until i get OS9 kinks and Digital Performer 3 working on it, I'll keep it around.
However my hope is that I can simply do a boot from DVD and format the OS9 partition and do it from scratch like I would when I install Windows.
Maybe I need to get one of those official disks after all? I installed it once before using the OS9Lives Image so I'm not sure what's different this time around?
-
If you're interested in Cubase why not try the 'Instant DAW' installation... the whole process takes like 2 MINUTES(!) and you get a fresh 9.2.2 along with Cubase/plugs and a bunch of other useful stuff!! Crazy cool!!! ;D ;D ;D
Check it out.

awesome yea i might go that route.. I'm nostalgic for DP3 because I had this setup around 2001.. only back then I didn't have a MOTU 828 like i do now! :)
my question about Cubase is will it work with MOTU Midi devices. With DP3 + FreeMIDI I have this setup all hooked up at once:
x1 MOTU MidiExpress XT (USB) 8 in / 8 out
x2 MOTU MTP AV (USB / Serial networked) 16 in / 16 out
My worry about other DAW is that they won't be able to talk to all my devices like I can do it in DP3..
but right now I just have to figure out how to reinstall OS 9.2.2 and it seems reasonable that I did it once before with this disk so I should be able to reinstall it. I can't remember what I did last time.
Because I have a working OSX partition, is there a way to install OS9 from OSX but to be clear I will never intentionally boot up to OSX so it's not like I'm looking for a "classic" solution. I want a native pure OS9 (OS9 lives counts in my book).
Thanks,
Caleb

all the info you need is here on the site.. try reading the sticky posts first
theres many threads on how to install mac os 9.22 as far as i know!
check the "HELP!" board here:
http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/board,22.0.html
perhaps someone needs to rewrite a more clear instruction if people are having difficulty still. maybe u could help us to clarify what it is u dont understand or wish to have clarified? :)
most people here on this site are firmly rooted in the OMS + CUBASE camp.. many of the core members (diehard! mactron etc) DO NOT use other programs such as LIVE!, DP! on a regular basis
therefore they dont have much to say re: FREEMIDI - there have been posts made on installing freemidi i think though, use the search engine here on the forums, make sure u are searching from the top top level of the forums or no results will appear (annoying bug int he search function)
-
many users have a difference of opinion on whats the best way to install so u will get conflicting opinions if u ask
re: installing fresh/clean/new from CD
not all mac G3/G4 will let u install from a new fresh CD for example the general.dmg installers are for the MDD g4's, mactron + other users suggest that this is the best + only installation u should be using for ANY g3/g4 and claim that it supports ALL preceding hardware while other users claim that using the machine-specific installers made by apple provide better performance and like to find the original Installer/Restore discs for that SPECIFIC machine.
i personally like to use the specific installler or Restore disks if possible for whatever machine im using, be it a Quicksilver, or an MDD, or a Sawtooth, or a B+W G3. but for most people this can prove to be a difficult task and requires alot of detective work to sleuth out.
-
which mac do u have?
-
ah ok that helps make sense of the confusion.. like there should just be one way that works with all G4 Sawtooth machines right?
Ok here is the skinny on my setup:
G4 Sawtooth
x2 IDE hard drives (not partitions)
- one with OSX (10.4 I think)
- one with OS9 Lives
x1 Zip Drive
x1 Supderdrive (i'm pretty sure
768mb ram
x1 Rage 128 card
Everything is working, but I'm having some weirdness with the software i want to run so I just wanted to come up with a quick / straight forward way to blow out the OS in case I jinxed something in the installation process and it would be faster to just redo the OS than get into the tinkering with files / drivers at this point.. maybe I'll get better at understanding what's going wrong but right now the behavior is weird and no one really knows DP3 well enough anymore to be able to help me directly with the program.
Is it better that I look for one of those official Disks? I'm not doing anything fancy with my mac.. I want it to a few music programs is all.
-
One suggestion would be to use the "Instant DAW" as a base installation (even if you don't use CuBase") and then Install DP and/or other apps.
-
I found this video and it looks cool :)
but where would i find said image? are you saying this is a complete 9.2.2 image WITH various music software pre-installed? that sounds brilliant!
Also OT question.. will cubase talk to MOTU Midi Express and MTP AV? This hardware is briliant as it lets me chain various devices to go WAY beyond the 16 midi channel limit of MIDI.. because each MIDI IN and MIDI OUT (8 pair on each unit) has it's own 16 channels.. which is great also because it allows me to do sysex dumps / push / gets to many devices at once.. I'm willing to abandon DP3 for another image..
but right now i just gotta figure out why my OS9 disk fails to give me options to reinstall.. maybe i need to be in OSX after all? that doesn't seem right.
so here are some screenshots from my system:

do a search for "Diehard Instant DAW" in the search box
u might not be able to find it if the admins have the instant daw hidden away in the silver/vault VIP area...? i forget where they posted it
if u are using a sawtooth tho, i really suggest using the sawtooth specific mac os 9.04 installation and patching up with the updates to 9.2.2 from there, some other opinionated users on the site will disagree with me but that is my opinion, having tested both on my Sawtooth AGP system! other users have agreed with me aswell that when using a machine specific version for the quicksilver 933mhz mac, the original install/restore seems to perform better.. i really believe that those installations were slightly tweaked for performance on that specific hardware
-
Thanks for the insight.. my Sawtooth is 450mhz.. it's not one of the latest / greatest of the G4's, but it was $25 and it's a fantastic machine. :)
is the 9.0.4 disk one I find on ebay or also in a silver / vault area? I believe the 9.2.2 image I got was also a private link (which i greatly appreciated!) so yes o OS9 Lives Gods out there if you hear my plea.. hook a brotha up (says a white guy) ;)
Thanks,
Caleb
-
and yea my "Diehard Instant DAW" search just leads to a few threads of people talking about it but no links..
i'm still kinda mystified that i'm having trouble at all with this image.. i installed it before.. it went smooth as anything.. but i just can't remember if i started in OSX.. or off disk.. i think i did it from OSX, but this time around I didn't catch any clear
Also i see a lot of OS9 - ish disks on ebay, but not clear which one would be the right one.. I know some Mac disks are pretty damn picky about what machine they do / don't install on. Anyone know some ebay listings that are..
I'm going downstairs to see if I can install this disk from OSX.. that must have been how I did it.. the whole process is a blur in hindsight :)
-
Hi there, I only just last week used the instant DAW disks and love the result, it's great! I used that as my base install & have since installed Pro Tools (from this site, I have a Digi001) and Logic 4.8.1. I'm about to install Reason 2 and some other bits and bobs, plugins etc, I'm nearly up to full strength ready to open up all my old logic songs!
If you want any help let me know as it's fresh in my mind as I only did it a couple of days ago.
Cheers, Steve,
-
Steve that sounds so awesome! How did you get the image. Maybe PM me if that's more discreet.. I'm not an apple employee... yea that sounds legit.
but seriously.. that sounds right up my alley.
I do want to see if I can make DP3 work but I'm definitely interested in other DAW.
Does anyone know if MOTU Midi patch bays are universal enough to work with other DAW like Cubase Logic and the rest? it seems like MOTU wouldn't make their hardware overly specialized to only work with their software.. but maybe they do? Protools I think was known for being like that.
Thanks,
Caleb

awesome i'm on it! yea i see now how it's listed.. it just feels like so many forum threads.. in my haste it feels like so much information.. not used to forums themselves being sources of links.. usually more like a web page.. just my mindset / filter.. thank you for your help! :) Ok.. laying off the coffee..
Thanks!

I also made a video about the installation. Which should be a part of the installation for explanations on how to and so on.

@caleb / part12studios
my images from the installation discs for the sawtooth g4 are posted on my private mediafire account here: https://www.mediafire.com/folder/calxk3ticozkv/1999_sawtoothG4 it seems its 9.0.2, there *IS* a 9.0.4 version aswell tho i think that came out after the 9.0.2 version, i just havent got it posted on my mediafire in the same folder yet, but the hard to find 8.6 install + 9.0.2 are both originally shipped with the purchase of the sawtooth AGP machine! (400 + 450mhz)
enjoy because it took persistance + quite a while to track these down..
i do reccomend u try the diehard instant daw aswell tho, if i were you id get a brand new drive (80gb-120gb) and split it into 2 seperate os9 partitions + install one of the machine specific installs + use the updates to patch up to 9.2.2, and on the other partition, install the diehard instant daw! i believe the diehard instant daw is based on the MDD' install/restore image of 9.2.2
then u can compare the two, u cant lose.
-
awesome grabbing the images now. what software do you use to burn .bin files?
i'm on a macbook pro with the latest OS.. i tried "liquidCD" and "burn" and neither seem to know what to do with these bin files.
i feel like a noob with this stuff.. everything i normally would think works doesn't.. lol.. it's just a bin file, but these programs don't recognize it even though they say they support.. I know it might seem like I'm just asking to be hand held but I'm googling and trying out programs wasting CDs and DVDs in the process.. before I come back asking for help.
sounds like good advise, i'll start with your recommendation. i don't expect perfection.. i just want something reasonably stable and really all of this just boils down to the damn midi clock not going out from DP3 to any external midi hardware even though notes are going out perfectly fine.. and this seems to be because the "transmit sync..." option under /basic won't appear.. it's like the window pops up but it's invisible/off the screen.. so bizzare..
-
its been awhile since i made these images im not 100% sure but i believe the .bin file is "macbinary" u have to first "unstuff it" with stuffit expander
its not the cd image .bin format like windows cd imaging apps like PowerISO or MagicISO use..
read more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBinary
the reason i would have made them .bin format is so that people downloading them using a mac os9 machine can get the files with the file fork association intact and burn them fine using TOAST. but u can still 'unstuff' them on mac osx or windows (windows has a stuffit expander aswell) but extracting them on those operating systems will damage the file fork. theres lots of posts explaining the nuances of this here on the forums though those posts may be burried by new posts now.. or they might be stickied. not sure.
its partially explained in each post on the download boards here (in the footer at the bottom of the page)
-
yea i don't know.. must have evil spirits in this thing.. after a few different reboots and what not.. now OS9Lives partition is weird.. boots up to the mac finder face tile background but nothing else past that.. i'm just going to go back to square one. figure out how i installed OS9 in the first place and try to replicate that.. doing a restore software from the OSX tiger partition doesn't work.. the "continue" type button is grayed out.. that was almost perfect.. if i could have just done that..
I'll figure out later today (2:30am here) gotta get some sleep.. I'll find the original tutorial i must have used.. ill try these other ones too as soon as I can figure out how to burn these images to DVD.. I did it before, I just have to figure out / remember what I did last time.
Thanks!

Happy to help anyone in the forums! I have 3 hard drives in my G4, I have 10.5.8 on one drive, Die Hard DAW on another and a third just for data.
I found the best way was to start from scratch, this is what I did:
First off, I burned the software restore disks from this site and treated my mac as completely new. I ran the software install process so I had a working OS X partition. I then installed the machine specific OS 9.2.2 on the other hard drive & rebooted into that. Once I had a fully working 9.2.2 partition, I installed a few bits and bobs like Stuffit, Toast etc, then used Classilla to download the files from DieHard.
Once downloaded, I used the Apple System Restore to push the image onto my 3rd hard drive, then booted into that, Voila!
I had to go that way as I have the 2003 dual 1.25ghz MDD and you have to use the machine specific version. I would think you could use a retail disk to boot your machine, but seeing as you already have a working OS 9 partition or drive, just download the files to that drive then restore the DieHard Image to a different partition or drive.
If you want me to really break things down I'll be glad to help. Probably better to keep it in the public forum, that way it might help someone else in the same boat! I'm off to bed now (25 to midnight here in the UK) but I'll check in tomorrow night to reconvene.
Speak soon!

By the way, the following info might help you. In my setup, my daily go to machine is a late 2014 Mac Mini running El Capitan. That machine is connected directly to a gigabit switch, as is my MDD. (in turn connected to my router). In my OS 9 machine I have Fetch installed and set my Mac Mini up as an FTP server to pull files from that.
When I initially downloaded the images in OS 9 I had to leave it overnight, it took ages! And as was pointed out by someone in here, OS 9 is a bit sticky with big downloads, so since using Fetch I do all my downloads on the Mac Mini and pull them into the MDD using Fetch, works great!
I installed stuffit on my Mac Mini to handling all unstuffing duties which works great (grab that here: http://my.smithmicro.com/stuffit-expander-mac.html (http://my.smithmicro.com/stuffit-expander-mac.html) )
It installs a widget that floats on your desktop so you can move it wherever you want and just drop stuffed files onto it. This is great for images and so on, but when I downloaded the .bin files of the actual DAW, I did that directly on the MDD in my existing OS 9.2.2 partition and used the version of stuffit specific to that OS just to make sure its all in the right format. Another tip is I prefer not to let Stuffit auto extract compressed files, just my preference (I don't like automation of any kind unless I've written the Apple Script!) as I like to know exactly what is doing what, to what, when, and what the result is! Makes for a happy tidy Mac...
If you want, when I get home tonight I can give you very precise step by step instructions, however I see that devils_advisor has made a video, maybe that might be useful? Is there a link DA?
Post back any queries, I'm sure between us all we'll get you through it!
-
Steve thanks a ton! You have some incredible stuff going on with your setup. Thankfully I'm only hoping to achieve a fraction of what you've managed to engineer. Props for getting all that to work together! :)
My G4 is in the basement. no internet available there except wifi.. I have an airport card in it and it's working BUT it fails to connect to my current wifi set.. something about the encryption or something.. something I'll figure out eventually.. but as it stands i'm ok with it being internet-less..
So I think my hurdles at this point will:
1. what program (and on what computer) do I need to burn the images
2. none of these images are over 700mb.. can I use a CD Rom or must I use DVD Disks for everything? I've misplaced my blank DVDs' so I need ot find them today or buy some more (I do have some DVD-R+ disks, does anyone know if Super drives are DVD+ or -?)
3. I need to be sure that the DAW image (as a disk) or some other image must be bootable. I know i have Tiger on the 2nd HDD (not partition), but honestly my hope is to have the first smaller drive by the OS9 drive and the 2nd one be for Digital Audio Recording..
NOTE: nether drive is over the 128gb ceiling so no need to partition them.. IIRC
4. get the image installed. The installation of the DAW image.. is it a strict copy / paste approach or is there a more traditional "installation" process as you'd experience say, installing normal Windows or OSX?
I'm not a perfectionist and I'm happy to experiment.. I just think perhaps I'm making assumptions on how things should work vs how they actually work. I could have sworn I booted from the DVD OS9Lives 9.2.2 I have.. but its not booting to install.. so clearly I must have to do it another way and that other way has escaped me.
Thanks! :)
Caleb

just use Toast.
yes of course u can use CDs .. OS9 was born in 1999. DVDs werent really even used back then because everything fit on cds!
the instant daw images are not bootable.. u must boot into a pre-existing mac os 9 installation and restore it from the images to a new partition as was just pointed out by Steve in his post above!
its a hard drive backup image, that u restore to a partition, there is no "install" other than that.. u are restoring the backup image to a new partition..
-
OK i see what you mean now. I have a OS9 dedicated hard drive.. i think 20gb.. and the other is like 80gb that has OSX on it.. not at my computer right now.. the 20gb was the original it came with and the other is a 2nd drive the unit. it also has
Yea about the ISO thing I just wasn't sure if images are "dvd" specific or "cd" specific or they just right data on a surface with giving to flips about what the material is :)
Once i figure out how to do a true honest to god reinstall of my "core" OS9 partition I can look into the DAW.. because right now i don't have 2 partitions on the OS9 drive..
I did plan on wiping OSX off of it eventually to make that a audio recording drive for DAW organization / access time.. but
as it stands now (don't ask me how it happened, i don't know) now OS9.2.2 won't boot.. it just loads up to the finder icon tile background with a mouse and doesn't load extensions and all that.. i might try a command option P R command to see if that flushes something.. i didn't do anything to the OS9 drive.. just booted to different devices.. cd rom.. etc..

Your'e welcome! See answers below in red
1. what program (and on what computer) do I need to burn the images
OK, I'll try my best to give you proper step by step instructions. I recommend using an OS 9.2.2 machine. Either download the images to your main daily driver & use the sneakernet to get them over on USB! OS 9 had a habit of getting grumpy if you try to restore/burn and some other functions from/to USB drives. Not so bad with firewire, so once you've got the .bin files all in one folder, use stuffit expander to extract them. Grab that from here: http://macintoshgarden.org/sites/macintoshgarden.org/files/apps/STFDLX703CLASSIC.SIT (http://macintoshgarden.org/sites/macintoshgarden.org/files/apps/STFDLX703CLASSIC.SIT)
2. none of these images are over 700mb.. can I use a CD Rom or must I use DVD Disks for everything? I've misplaced my blank DVDs' so I need ot find them today or buy some more (I do have some DVD-R+ disks, does anyone know if Super drives are DVD+ or -?)
You don't need CDs or DVDs, the bin files, once extracted is a single disk image file which is separated into 4 files. I'll explain what to do with them next
3. I need to be sure that the DAW image (as a disk) or some other image must be bootable. I know i have Tiger on the 2nd HDD (not partition), but honestly my hope is to have the first smaller drive by the OS9 drive and the 2nd one be for Digital Audio Recording..
If you have an OS 9 retail disk, I suggest booting from that, then use disk utility to completely wipe every drive in your machine, then install that OS 9 to the DATA drive you plan to use for audio. Once installed, boot into that drive, then install stuffit in there, get your DieHard files onto the same partition where you just installed OS 9, then use Apple Software restore (must be in the same folder as the .IMG files) to push the image to the actual drive you ultimately want to boot from. Once this is done, boot into that partition & enjoy a big fat smile as you see that DAW come to life!
NOTE: nether drive is over the 128gb ceiling so no need to partition them.. IIRC
4. get the image installed. The installation of the DAW image.. is it a strict copy / paste approach or is there a more traditional "installation" process as you'd experience say, installing normal Windows or OSX?
See above
I'm not a perfectionist and I'm happy to experiment.. I just think perhaps I'm making assumptions on how things should work vs how they actually work. I could have sworn I booted from the DVD OS9Lives 9.2.2 I have.. but its not booting to install.. so clearly I must have to do it another way and that other way has escaped me.
Thanks! :)

Sorry to be a pest but just in case I missed it, do you know the serial number for your machine? If so, just to be sure, put it into the lookup section on everymac to be 100% sure what machine you have, then post the link in here so I can take a look.
I don't even mind doing a full tutorial on video as I know it might help others, and I mean literally all the nuts and bolts!
If you would like me to do that let me know, as soon as I have time I'll get it done, probably on Friday, then chop the video together on Saturday, edit & comp it & upload by Sunday...
-
OK so I don't have a retail disk. maybe someone could check ebay and link me to one they know would be what I want? there are a lot of OS9-ish disks out there but my fear is that I may buy the wrong one. I'm always happy to get legit stuff to insure smooth operation.
I don't know/use sneaker net.. the G4 is offline. I did buy an airport card, but it fails to conncet to my wifi due to something about the WLAN or something not being compatible.. probably just really old and my wireless router is using something newer the wifi on the mac doesn't recognize.
I was linked a fantastically promising disk image that's specifically for Sawtooth machines (which I have) however it's also a .bin and extracts to a extensionless file.. i've tried to mount it as an ISO in OSX.. i'm not having any luck.. and wasting disks.
Does anyone know what program I should use that will unquestionably burn this ISO (assuming it's an ISO, it has no extension) to be a disk.. I have a macbook pro with the latest OSX on it.. i have a windows 7 laptop with CD/DVD burner.. and of course the Sawtooth G4, but that unit isn't online so i'd have to download the file(s) from another and transport it over via flash drive or usb HD.
I think once I can burn this sawtooth OS disk i'll be golden.
-
You dont burn it on anything unless you wanna archive it. Watch the 2 videos it will show you what to do. The videos work in conjunction with the description. Look at the download links you need them all. Again watch the 2 videos and you see what needs to be done.
-
ok understood about the DAW.. but right now i have a dysfunctional OS9.. i need to make a (bootable) OS9 disk so i can format / reinstall everything. i'm stuck until i can figure this out, but i'm glad to know the DAW part of the process requires no disk burning.
In another thread I was given the sawtooth OS9 image.. I just have to figure out how to get that image burned onto a CD/DVD successfully.
-
OK... let's start from scratch...
1) When booting appears to get "weird" it is a good idea to reset the PRAM "Command-Option-P-R" as soon as you turn on power, wait for 3 separated chimes (cycles) before you release the keys... just google this if I am going too fast
2) you can hold "option" all key to scan for all things bootable or "C" to boot to a CD-ROM
3) You do NOT need to buy anything, since we have all the versions imaged here, so just let us know the exact model of your G4
-
:D
-
OK so for this one the PR command combo did the trick to fix the funky boot.. thanks for that. I suspected that might work I just hadn't had a chance to try it.
So at this point I just need to figure out the exact steps to take this nice sawtooth installation image and successfully burn it to a CD so I can boot from that CD to do a clean wipe / installation of 9.2.2 again.. I want to troubleshoot DP3 to figure out what I did somehow to cause the "transmit sync..." option under basic to simply not pop up a window at all when it really should.
Eventually I'll probably get more comfortable to not exercise the nuclear option but for now i want to just back up and be more methodical with my troubleshooting.. another thread I'm posting on has the image i'm talking about so I'll see if the owner of that knows which burning software i should use. I do understand the DAW image doesn't need burning and i look forward to trying that one out as soon as I get this sawtooth installation bin burned to a cd i can boot from since the 9.2.2 imagine I have fails to fully boot.

maybe u could check the manual for the 828 interface for some further insights

Morning all, I'm snowed under with work at the moment and difficult for me to get in and help this feller, I'll get in when I can...
If you really want to burn a disk to boot from for your sawtooth you can use toast on your main OS X machine that will be fine. I have burned many disks with mine. I am on version 14.1 (I just bought it off the site)
All you need is the OS 9 disk image correct for your machine.
Try this one:
http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/topic,2109.0.html
But you can use your standard Mac software to burn this image if you want, it's just an ISO.
Post back if you are unsure how to do this.
This is the most popular OS 9 boot disk and is most widely used.

ive already sorted him out with links to the rare hard to find original cds that shipped with the sawtooth AGP machine for mac os 8.6 + 9.0.2

honestly tho caleb i dont know what the problem is
i just downloaded one of the bin file again just to check it for u and u can literally just download it and double click it on any osx mac and it opens "unarchiver" utility and it expands on its own.. no stress.. 2 clicks.. thats all it takes.
im on my 2008 imac using El Capitain OS.. it should work on any mac osx from snow leopard to el cap.. just download it on any other mac + the image gets extracted, do a cmd-i on the file and it shows the toast icon + logo.. its associated to TOAST on my mac... if u have toast installed it will be there aswell. check the attached images and you can see that macosx automatically recognizes it as a toast image file regardless of "file extension"
the restore image works the exact same as the diehard instant daw, (using ASR restore software) except that its an official restore image from apple and its BOOTABLE - after u burn the cd u can restore the os9.0.2 installation that the sawtooth originally shipped with in early 2000, in about 5-10minutes... its really fast. its only 250mb. also u dont need both the install or the restore.. u need choose one or the other.. the install version installs from scratch as u would be familiar with doing on a windows pc.

I see now the key word is "toast" which I don't have. I did manage to find an OS9 version (5 i think) on macgarden so I'll install that and see how that works with the disk image. I was trying all kinds of other free OSX and even PC software but none of them seemed to like the image (probably just to old a format to recognize)
-
what osx version are u using..
i have toast 9 titanium installed on my imac 2008...
but i think u can use versions 6,7,8, 9 or higher?
they maybe up to version 11 or 12 now for all i know i cant remember
but the program TOAST itself is not an absolute requirement..
u should be able to use a generic "free" app to burn the image file aswell
-
i'm running 10.11.6
I wasn't sure if a free (ish) version was out there.. or maybe newer versions might still not like old images of old OS stuff..
yea all the programs i've tried so far.. "burn" and "liquid CD" were failing to recognize the image.. so i kinda gave up trying the freeware crap since nothing was working..
the only real results I had was either they didn't recognize the image (the "unzipped" .bin file) or they made me a nice burned CD with the image as a file ON the disk.. lol..
-
you can probably burn the disk using disk utility itself too (Which is already installed on every mac os installation)
https://support.apple.com/kb/PH20577?locale=en_US
as long as u 'unstuff' or 'unarchive' the initial .bin file
to get the image file inside (which has no file extension)
then select the image file and burn it
like i said before the files are "encapsulated" inside a macbinary .bin file in order to protect the invisible meta data + Resource fork that the mac os + file system use to identify the files assocation + knowing which program to use to launch it when you double click..without protecting + wrapping the file inside a "container" in this way, the files meta data + resource fork becomes damaged/missing, most people use Stuffit .sit files to accomplish this
but .bin files work just the same
u can view this thread for more info on how u can create your own macbinary files on your modern macosx system (for the purpose of transfering them to a mac os 9 machine)
maybe that will help u understand it better

yep that doesn't work either.. OSX fails to even see the file as an image i can select.. grayed out like other non-iso images.. i'll make a video showing what i'm doing when i get home.. my internal CD rom on this macbook pro has a HDD caddy in it.. so i have to use a USB burner.. which works perfectly fine other than watching dvd movies like any usb burner won't do.
Thanks,
Caleb

it doesnt matter if it recognizes it or not.. it *IS* an image file..
u may have to select the file manually using the file -> drop down dialog
but it WILL work.. trust me.. and once u have toast installed if u can find a copy then
it will see it as a valid image..
try the disk utility method - in the post i just made above
-
ok! yes using the Toast 5 from macgarden for OS9 i got it to burn.. i was a little worried because felt less like an image and more like a bunch of files that may or may not register as "bootable".. but yes the disk did boot! so yea nice to know i have a working version of toast for the future as well..
now the only question i have.. do i simply "format disk" (point to the OS9 Lives Partition) and copy / paste the content of the CD rom into it and that's all? That simple?
-
so yes things are looking great. i made a OS9 Main.. and OS9 DAW partitions.. now to put the DAW image. I guess just copy / paste all the files into that partition?
Screen shows the damn window that wouldn't pop up in DP3 before.. now it's working.. Midi Clock sending over devices! :) Thanks for all your help guys!

i think u will need to copy them onto the MAIN os9 partition and then run the ASR restore in order to do the restore to the new blank image that you intend to use for instant DAW..
congrats on fixing your MIDI issue with your MOTU hardware!

awesome thanks I'll take that approach and see how it does!
what's a healthy partition size for OS9? Seeing how the content is less than a CD rom.. my 20gb drive currently broken into two 10gb partitions (main and daw)
NOTE that DP3 requires I turn off virtual memory so even that's not there to suck up any HDD space.
Also sorry that attachment came in upside down.. iOS doesn't like me photographing as a lefty.. heh.
Thanks,
Caleb

honestly i wouldnt use a 20gb drive personally..
a bit too tight + Restrictive.. id use a 40gb drive though.. or a 60gb
but preferably 80gb or higher.. just because the drives are available + cheap
but of course it will work.. but i dont like being low on space!
-
i'm just using the original hardware. i have a 80gb drive as well.. but i'm using that to record digital audio.. this would just be a dedicated partition to run the OS stuff and core applications..
but yea you're right drives would be super cheap to procure.. as it is i have
20gb HDD
80gb HDD
Zip Drive
DVD Burner
-
20gb for os + 80gb for recording works too!
-
You can't just copy the files across to the DAW partition, you have to use Apple Restore or the software won't be pre authorised.
-
ok understood. makes sense! :)
Thanks,
Caleb

you still have not watched the videos.
-
this is true.. i am currently working on figuring out why i can't monitor audio with my MOTU 828.. yet it records and plays back fine..
-
Being as it seems you are still struggling here I have a suggestion. I can't this coming week as I'm tied up with other projects, but I have a 12 inch powerbook G4 which runs OS 9 just dandy, but it's not the DAW DieHard image. I might make a video from absolute scratch explaining every single part in detail, including all the downloading, extracting, which software to use and how to do it.
Might take a few weeks though, maybe a month so don't hold your breath, but it might be something that helps others also in addition to the 2 vids that have already been put up.
-
I need to practice it a few times but yea i might see if i can do the same some time.. I feel like maybe some of the terminologies and processes are obvious once you've done it, but in some ways I was really unclear.. mostly me just being in a hurry and some steps being misunderstood.
I may also see if I can do something similar as a video perhaps to just be my take on the process. really what did it for me finally was getting the original universal 9.2.2 ISO (this is key, not bin) that definitely burned to a DVD.. from there things went way better.. but the bin / iso stuff never did work for me..
also with emphasis being on Toast being THE program to use if you have a mac.. this also was key to me having more success..
At this point I think i'm ok.. I just have to sit down and go over the DAW steps.. I'm curious about it, but more excited to get DP3 working with my studio setup since that's the DAW I wanted to get working..
I did get the MOTU 828 monitoring stuff worked out today which was the last big DAW issue.. it was a setting in DP3 that I had to mess with a bit to get it right.. super excited to start making some stuff happen with all this gear.
Now for a sound check that involves three 48 point patch bays packed with ins/outs.. (144 jacks!) to test all the midi and audio in's and outs.. crazy what a craig's list addiction can do. lol

maybe u want to outline that info for the rest of us to profit from ;)
would be cool?
-
absolutely. let me get back down there and do some videos. i'm not sure how many people want to do this setup but I'll be happy to help insure the next person has a smoother ride! :)

you might want to actually post it in the Digital performer section maybe?

exactly when i put it together that's where i'll stash it :)
