We have used Outlook Express 5.0.6 (POP) running under OS 9.2.2 for several years as our email application. About 3 days ago we could no longer retrieve gmail and started receiving the following error message whenever we do a Send and Receive. Sending emails works fine.
Could not retrieve mail from the account
The identity certificate uses an unknown signature algorithm
Error 3006
We can access gmail on our iPad and using Classilla 9.3.3 on our G4.
What can we do to get this working again? Also, does anyone know where I could download a free copy of Eudora 6.1.1? The most recent version I have been able to find is 5.1.
Thank you,
Dean

Did you activate legacy support under gmail? Thats the first thing that happend to me. How do you pull the mails (imap/pop) of the server?
-
We are using POP. Your legacy idea sounds like it could be a possibility. I looked but didn't see a clear explanation of what it is, how to find out if I am already configured that way and if not, how to make the change. Can you provide more information? Thank you!

Pretty easy. I started the app and couldnt login. Then i got a gmail message that a legacy app was trying to connect. In that message is a link where you can enable that. But i cant give you the link becaus it would take you to my account. Check you gmail emails.

this is because of google instating more security

i just got a msg from google via email to my account stating that the sign in attempt was blocked when trying to use windows xp's version of outlook express to sign into my gmail account + send a msg..
Sign-in attempt prevented
Hi Chris,
Someone just tried to sign in to your Google Account *****@gmail.com from an app that doesn't meet modern security standards.

We strongly recommend that you use a secure app, like Gmail, to access your account. All apps made by Google meet these security standards. Using a less secure app, on the other hand, could leave your account vulnerable. Learn more.
Google stopped this sign-in attempt, but you should review your recently used devices:
theres a copy of the email text that i was sent.. i think that u can still disable this in your gmail preferences.
the fix for this is to visit this url, while signed into your gmail account:
https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps
and select "turn on" to enable access by "less secure apps"

i was able to get my outlook express to work using IMAP instead of POP..
under "servers" tab
make sure to NOT CHECK "log on using Secure Password Authentication"
(having this enabled made it not work)
also,
under the "servers" tab. and use 465 port for SMTP + 993 port for IMAP
(check both boxes for "this server requires SSL")
and make sure IMAP is enabled in your gmail settings (via a browser)
and of course u have to do the fix above by enabling "less secure" access (also via a browser + the url i posted above)
lots of hoops to jump thru but it works!
-
you still need to enable the less secure option because they authorization will fail if its not. i think when they dropped a certain ssl protocol thats what happend.

Thanks for the tips!
I’ll try on my Mac OS 9 MDD :D
-
Well, nothing works on my Entourage 2001 under Mac OS 9.
-
are u trying with imap or pop
-
imap
-
check your gmail settings to make sure u have imap enabled + low security option "turned on" (url above)
and check that u have the port numbers for the imap set right
i mixed up the 993 + 465 myself ;)

Thanks, I have done all of these options but not luck.

Clasilla built in POP3 and IMAP client are the best in my opinion.
