I believe logic express / pro were versions introduced with version 6 although im trying to find evidence to prove that;0
UPDATE:
http://www.sweetwater.com/insync/winter-namm-2004-emagic-logic-express-6/
im assuming this is logic express 6 in this aug 2005 article? was logic 7 out by aug 2005?
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/may04/articles/logicproandexpress.htm <-- os9 still supported
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/aug05/articles/logicexpress.htm
i believe logic express 7 was the first popular version of the app, and that it was based on osx only(?) im trying to fnd out if there was indeed a logic express 6 and if it was for os9.. and if so under emagic brand? or apple?
regardless, this thread serves to explore the difference between express + pro product lines of logic.. some of that data will be re: 8 some will be re: 9.. lets begin!

Hi,
Logic Pro is part of Logic Studio. Logic Studio is a set of programs: Logic Pro, Mainstage (kind of a live performance version of Logic) and Waveburner, a professional Audio CD mastering / burning tool. And some other programs... see http://www.apple.com/logicstudio/what-is/ .
Logic Express is a "light" version of Logic Pro, but it's certainly a professional tool, much more powerful than Garageband, for instance. Some differences between Pro and Express:
- Express does not support Surround mixing
- Exress doesn't come with the organ, e-piano and Sculpture instrument plugins
- Express doesn't have the Spacedesigner reverb
- Express has a smaller sample library than Pro
Apart from that, it's essentially the same program. I went from Express to Pro last year, and didn't notice the difference, apart from the extra Pro-goodies. The nice thing is that if you start with Express, and upgrade later, you pay the same total amount as when you buy Pro right away. So, if your new to DAW's I'd go for Express first. And try Garageband first... for "light" users it can often offer enough functionality, ad it's simpler in use than Logic.

Logic Pro 9, Logic Express 9: Comparison of features
Logic Express 9 and Logic Pro 9 are both powerful music production applications that share all but 3 features. The main differences are not between the features of the respective applications, but between the plug-ins, content, and additional applications that are bundled in the products they come packaged in. This article provides a summary of those differences.
The 3 Logic Pro 9 features that are not found in Logic Express 9 are:
Surround sound mixing (up to 7.1).
Distributed Audio Processing (allows sharing of processing power between networked computers)
Support for TDM compatible Avid hardware (Mac OS X v10.5.x only).

http://www.macworld.com/article/1029050/logic.html (Jan 15, 2004)
"Logic Express 6 requires Mac OS X v10.2 or higher or 9.1 or higher; G3/250MHz or faster; 128MB RAM and 100MB hard disk space."
^^ according to the above statement in this macworld article it claims that logic express 6 did support os9.1
Logic Express 6 can support up to 48 tracks, 12 input channels and a sample rate of up to 96K. And as students get more adept, Logic Express 6 files are upwardly compatible to Logic Pro 6, according to Apple.
apparently express v6 (mac os 9 supported) required a dongle xskey usb stick
but express v7 does not (but is also mac osx only)

7 installtion manual makes reference to needing to put in the 6 dongle in to install.. :/
strange that its nearly impossible to find logic 6 or logic express 6 ANYWHERE!

this article claims it supports os 9.1 ^^
Apple anticipates that Logic Pro 6 and Logic Express 6 will be released in March. System requirements for Logic Pro 6 call for Mac OS X v10.2 or higher or 9.1 or higher; G3/300MHz or faster; 256MB RAM; 350MB HD space. Logic Express 6 requires Mac OS X v10.2 or higher or 9.1 or higher; G3/250MHz or faster; 128MB RAM and 100MB hard disk space.
While the full Logic Pro 6 package costs $999, upgrades will be offered for users of older versions. Logic Gold and Platinum owners can upgrade for $199, while users of older versions of Logic will be able to upgrade for $699.

Hi,
I have an XS Key(chunky) with Logic Platinum (5)
Logic Express 7 uses a Serial ( I had trouble with the install on 10.4 when I upgraded to 7.2.3, but I am running 7.2.1 fine on a 10.5 G4 at the moment )
Logic Pro 7 requires an XS Key (slim)
I think I have Logic 1 some where :) should check out what that needs! (initially running that on a powerbook180c)
