can anyone explain the need for these sync boxes that support multiple formats?

MTC i know... but
DTL?
FSK?

Two Channel, 2 MIDI in/outs plus Macintosh connections. Externally synchable, and clock out to synch other things.  Synch types: MTC, DTL and FSK. Something tells me it stripes and reads SMPTE as well, but since I can't find the manual, I can't confirm that. (the front panel indicates it though).  Tested and found fully functional, but never used. In original box, with MAC cables and power supply.

i saw another box like this on another page

what are these for?

I used a similer box called a 'Time Code Machine' by Opcode that was a SMPTE/ Midi converter. I used it to stripe R2R tape with LTC... When the tape played back, the SMPTE was fed into the Time Code Machine, which converted the SMPTE into MTC ... that was used to synchronize a sequencer/DAW to the R2R Tape.

FSK was used to sync 4 tracks (or n-tracks) to MIDI aware stuff.

It was a signal that was supposed to be recorded, and, later, it could sync a drum machine.

My Yamaha RX-8 drum machine can sync to midi or FSK with my 4-track yamaha tape recorder.

Wasting 1 track you can have a stereo sequencer among 3 audiotracks (in a 4-track setup)

That FSK needed a DIN cable similar to the ones used on MSX machines.
