has anyone experimented with the MDD to quiet it down, mine is so loud!!!
I'm planning to replace the two 60mm fans in PSU, and the large 120mm main fan with the following:

have any of you done something similar, were the results worth it? would love to hear back. thanks.

yes there are multiple threads here on this topic..
most of the noise is because of the small 2 fans in the psu
i have modded both my mdd's

So Nian have only just bought the machine and it's noisy or you've had it a while and it's grown noisy?
The reason I ask is that if you've only just got the MDD, give it a good clean, vacuum and all especially around the front of the machine - under the clear plastic stand - alot of dust collects there and hinders air flow. This usually gets the MDD to quieten down alot -
if this is not the issue and you just want to do a cooling mod - that's fine too -

has some good articles for you.

these 2 fan placements really do alot to improve cooling..
i have fans in these spots on my 867dp and it does a great job
set up in push/pull configuration

I did give it a clean on the very 1st day before i even turned it on.
the thing is i've never used a G4 before. besides my laptops, these are the desktops im used to....iMac G3, Powermac G5 Quad, Mac Pro 2010 Quad. (all fairly quiet) i was particularly looking for a G4 for the longest time to get my os9 rig up and finally scored one form work that they were recycling, it does have some battle scars but man is it loud!
these are some awesome resources by the way. thank you.
the idea is the get proper amount of airflow without the noise. so i'm concerned about the proper numbers in CFM & db.

nian, i had made a link to some auctions for fans that i think will still be up + Active if u look
syntho had suggested getting pentium3 coolers and taking the fans off those as they are the right size aswell

Got my fans and replaced them with new ones. Noise wise not much difference :(
PSU fans work great!
large 120mm cpu fan is plugged into a 4 pin molex, as i want it to run constantly.
PROBLEM!!!!
the powermac wont turn on! it will turn on if i plug in the original 120mm fan into the MB. I tried wiring in the SilenX to the MB still no go.
What to do? this is really annoying, time and money wasted.

I guess the Mac need to "sense" the original regulated fan.
You could use the sense on ...

these fans instead of the original ones.
For sure Apple used another pinout for the 3-4 pins standard from PC market.
-
sorry nian but that doesnt really make sense.. i think u must have a short or something...ive done this twice
and both times i replaced the 120mm fan like u did, wired straight to a 4pin molex and it works fine, keep troubleshooting
-
you will see the benefit more in OSX than in OS9.
just as the original fans also are more terrible in OS9.
-
yes he will "See the benefit" of the sound being more quiet..
u make a helluva lot of sense dude.. lol
what fuckin planet are u from ???? :D
-
the machine needs something to "sense" on the factory fan port.
I've tried the new 60mm fan, the new 120mm fan, the old 60mm fan on that port and nothing is "sensed" by the machine. only thing that works is the factory 120mm. really strange.
to isolate the problem i disconnect everything internally except the power button to logic board and Psu to logic board, same thing the power button lights up then the machine instantly dies.
plug in the factory fan = all good.
it seems like that circuit some how needs to be completed. do you guys know the voltage / wattage of that fan port? > i want to try one more thing... put in a resistor to complete that loop and just enough for computer to know "sense" something.
so no one experienced this? I don't see what i'm shorting out.... at this point i don't know what to do but would love to hear form you guys, if i cant get this going ill probably get rid of it.
this place has been great help. thanks dudes.

which mdd model do u have?
i used a basic cooler master 120mm fan from any pc shop
http://www.coolermaster.com/cooling/case-fan/blue-led-silent-fan-120mm/
and i never had this problem
the voltage of any fan port is usually 5v or 12v
most 120mm fans u can buy will need 12v i think
i think theres voltage modifiers
pretty sure this is how all the fan speed addons work in pc by changing between 5v 7v + 12v or something like that
i never had the problem of my mdd not powering on tho i can try to unplug my fans and see if it powers on right now
to check for u
i have the dp 867 model, and the 1.25 2003 model (first + last mdd models?)
ok it wasn the "First model" as 3 mdd models were released at the same time
in August 2002 http://www.oldschooldaw.com/forums/index.php?topic=389.0

It's a powermac g4 Mdd dual 1.25 fw400 the best machine to run os9
