Title: How to create a drag install?
Post by: Syntho on July 26, 2014, 08:56:28 PM
I want to create a drag install of OS8.6. How would one go about doing that?

do a fresh install from cd onto a freshly formatted drive or partition and then save the entire drive after the install to a stuffit file.
this is all diehard did i think but he booted up into a different drive before ever starting up the new install that way he captured it after install, but before first boot up, preserves the "First login" experience etc

Interesting.... i just take the original Finder out of the original System Folder (replacing it after to copy process is complete) and drag both of them separately to their backup or drive destination (in the latter case, as the last step, I drag the copied Finder back into the copied System Folder).  I don't bother with invisible files since authorization keys are not usually useably retained anyway.

This is done by Apple to distribute the very last copies of Mac Os 9.2.2 maily for 2003 MDD. AFAIK

My recollection of the 9.2.2 general install is that it does not include certain MDD elements, such as the multiprocessing driver and I think the audio driver, hence my 1.25 dual showed one processor or no audio, one or both of these. I absolutely needed my machine specific install disks. Of course once installed I just drag copied a backup of all the system files.

I know this is off topic here....just wanted to chime in about MDDs.

Syntho, what are you using 8.6 on? Curious....

I don't have it yet, but a 9600. I found an old torrent floating around with an 8.6 install. It also comes with an 'extras' folder filled with useful software. I believe you can actually boot off of the CD. I hope that's all I'm gonna need. If you can provide a better source for an 8.6 install that would be great.

I don't think I ever had an installer. I think I bought a machine with it on it, so i just copied it, later put the system folder on other machines. I always ran a minimalist system with a 7.6 Finder sometimes (not so stable).
