Title: GeForce4 Ti 4600 only boots in Safe Mode
Post by: smokelessjoe on October 18, 2018, 12:53:06 PM
I have a MDD 1.25 DP with a Mac version GeForce4 Ti 4600.  At least I think it’s the Mac version; it’s the really long one.  Anyway, I can only boot in safe mode.  If I boot into OS 9.2.2, I get a blank blue screen.  If I boot into OS X (10.4.11) it looks good but then I get an infinitely spinning beachball.  When I replace the video card with some NVidia 32MB ADC/DVI card, it boots normally.

Other troubleshooting I’ve tried includes zapping the PRAM, replacing all RAM with new ones from OWC, trying different hard drives and reinstalling the OS.

I hope it’s a driver issue rather than a hardware failure.  I just found this site so I’ll try reinstalling drivers. Any other suggestions for further testing?

Thanks!

If you haven't resolved it yet, I could not get OS9.2.2 to load the drivers, so it would start to run then  show no video at all, yet worked fine in 10.5.8.  So I wound up erasing the OS9 drive and starting over from the CD. Worked fine then--no idea why it had to be done given I made no changes at all other than install apps, but it works fine and dandy now.

it shouldnt be the case with an default 9.2.2. whatever install, but maybe your current nvidia drivers are incomplete or too old?

Well as I said, a reinstall fixed the issue. I suspect at some point over the years I trashed the NVidia drivers since I had an ATI card, and that is why it did not work at first.
