Title: SSD TRIM Enable?
Post by: FdB on April 09, 2019, 10:36:31 AM
Have not checked this on Macs here that I’ve installed SSDs in -
but found this in my bookmarks just now while working on taxes.
As there have always been questions concerning TRIM with the SSDs
... thought perhaps someone  might want to check this out further?

And, this may only pertain to newer Macs.
If so, sorry for the waste of your time. ;)

Does anyone have an idea how to do this on an OS9-only system?

(where it's not possible to add TRIM; I read somewhere you should partition the disk at 90-98% of it's size to reduce the wear on it or something)

The best bet is to buy a drive that is under-provisioned and hope for the best. Under-provisioning basically does what hageir said, from the factory, leaving a chunk of the disk free for wear leveling. This is how it was handled before TRIM was developed for modern OSes. Look for drives that are slightly under "typical" capacities, ie 60gb instead of 64, 120 vs 128, 240 vs 256, etc.

It’s not possible on OS9 systems, and isn’t available in OS 10, until OS 10.6
It’s not possible on anything before Microsoft OS 7 either..

It is just programming..sadly we cannot ask hints from guy who made support for Windows 95:

EDIT: BUT! example OWC says that "OWC SSD don’t need TRIM. The SandForce controller takes care of garbage collection"

in practice it is enough if you just do not use all of the space a volume has. unused space can and will also be used when other segments (which are free, orphaned or in the trash) wears out.
