Title: email on Mac OS 9, what client does actually work?
Post by: MDD on May 31, 2015, 11:45:25 AM
Hello guys!

I have been trying to make my gmail and iCloud accounts work on MacOS9 with every email client known to me,  I am stunned that all of them failed to work.  :o

So, to make this long story short, has anyone here been successful checking their iCloud or gmail accounts on MacOS9 with an email client? Please note that I am not interested on webmail. An email client is what I am looking for.  :-\

Thanks a lot!  ;D

The mail client that comes with Classilla works with Gmail. I use it all the time.

Open up Classilla and look at the bottom left of the window. You have an icon there shaped like an envelope. Click it and configure your mail account :)

Thanks Knezzen 8)

I'll try again, I remember that for some reason Clasilla could not send or receive email. I am not sure what I did wrong.  ???

That's strange. Did you specify the correct SMTP server information, login information etc?

If you're using Gmail, all the info you need is here (taken from Google's docs):

Quote
Many clients will automatically configure the appropriate IMAP connection settings for your account, but confirm that the connection settings your client configures are the same as what's listed below.

If you're using a client that's not listed above, you can also use the following information to configure your IMAP. If you have problems, contact your mail client's customer support department for further instructions.

Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server - Requires SSL
imap.gmail.com
Port: 993
Requires SSL:Yes
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - Requires TLS
smtp.gmail.com
Port: 465 or 587
Requires SSL: Yes
Requires authentication: Yes
Use same settings as incoming mail server
Full Name or Display Name: [your name]
Account Name or User Name: your full Gmail address ([email protected]). Google Apps users, please enter username@your_domain.com
Email address: your full Gmail address ([email protected]) Google Apps users, please enter username@your_domain.com
Password: your Gmail password
If your client does not support SMTP authentication, you won't be able to send mail through your client using your Gmail address.

Also, if you're having trouble sending mail but you've confirmed that encryption is active for SMTP in your mail client, try to configure your SMTP server on a different port: 465 or 587.

They mention Mulberry 3.1.6a, with NEW SSL Certificates.

Mulberry is only working for modern POP and IMAP accounts, that is incredibly modern!

Registration for older versions of Mulberry

Older versions of Mulberry require a serial number and registration code to use. Below are codes you can use with these older versions now that Mulberry is free.
Mulberry Version   Serial Number   Registration Code   Security Plugin Key
v4.x   SFREE   D71B 79CC C592 6E60   Not required
v3.x   SFREE   8B37 34EE 2324 08CE   B69B509A

Note:

Any '0's in the registration codes are the numeral zero.
Security plugins (PGP etc) prior to v4 required an extra code (provided above).

So this is the future, where 'El Capitan' is able to connect to OS9 via FileSharing
using VMwareFusion with Leopard-Server (Finder/GoTo/ConnectWithServer: afp://.../)
Solution for webDAV: Goliath 1.01 http://www.webdav.org/goliath/#desc

Solution for FTP: Fetch 4.0.3 http://fetchsoftworks.com/fetch/download/
I could get FTP access from OS9 to PPC/Leopard, but yet haven't been able to connect to the VirtualMachine running Leopard-Server. No connection to OSX10.11.

Speaking of cloud storage services: Box.com can be accessed via WebDAV on Mac OS 9. I use it all the time for file sharing with my rMBP.

Server: https://dav.box.com/dav
Login: Your Box login email address and password.

Getting access to Windows-networks with DAVE
Here's file-sharing the other direction:
Get access to any OS X Mac running a virtual Windows (VMware Fusion) using DAVE.
Move files between
[shared OSX- folders from within virtual Win]<>[virtual Win-Public folder]<>[MacOS9 running DAVE]

Now there are 2 solutions:
1.) with virtual OS X 10.5 on the intel Mac (access the virtual 10.5 from MacOS9 with FTP using Fetch 4.0.3 or Transmit 1.7)
or
2.) with virtual Win on the intel Mac (or even Linux) (access the virtual Win from MacOS9 with SMB using DAVE)
Not too bad... :)

Another gimmick for MacOS9 productivity:
Adding custom stamps to PDF-files using Acrobat5:
http://support.iyogi.com/software-issues/utility-software/how-to-create-a-custom-stamp-in-adobe-acrobat-5-0.html (http://support.iyogi.com/software-issues/utility-software/how-to-create-a-custom-stamp-in-adobe-acrobat-5-0.html)
This enables MacOS9 to receive PDF email-attachments and edit them, add signature and office-stamp or any other icon/picture by using the "stamp-tool" of Acrobat.
The modified PDF may be resent again with email or fax. Great stuff.

Hello,

I don't mean to revive an old thread, but is it still possible for outlook express and Classila to access email ? Does anyone know if gmail converted to POP3 or is it still gmail and do I need to turn something on for gmail to work ?

Thanks.

Still using Classilla emailer since forever using IMAP and Gmail. You need to enable "insecure applications" in your gmail account to use it though, or create an app password if you use 2FA with your Google account. But after doing that, it works just fine :)

I wasn't aware even IMAP would work with it. Thanks for the clarification, buddy! :)

Can't stand the terribleness of POP. It's just too damn old ;)

My BTInternet POP3 mail is still working with Netscape e-mail client.

Sadly, a few days ago Yahoo webmail seems to have stopped working.
Classilla unexpectedly quits (type 2) when I try to sign in. Whenever they've messed around in the past, a bit of url manipulation usually finds a workaround, but this looks more terminal...

I just got done checking my mail under classila - I have unsecured all my accounts under gmail because i AM NOT scared of anything and I am covered by 3 firewalls plus my router's firewall, so I don't need google's protection. Really, this security stuff is too far in between. So, gmail's pop3 works with Netscape ? Interesting. I need to check this out. As for Yahoo, make sure you are following the directions clearly and unsecure anything you have(email only), so it will send and receive through OS 9.

Good evening, fellow Mac users;

I used to own a Power Macintosh 9600 with Mac OS 8.6 installed. A few years ago, that was. With lots of trouble I succeeded to establish an Outlook Express 5 account with a Gmail address. Frankly, I forgot noting the exact server settings prior to giving the computer away to a Mac museum.

Now I own a Power Macintosh G4 Digital Audio with Mac OS 9.2.2. Again, I would like to access my Gmail e-mails via Outlook Express (or any other client that you can recommend).

As I'm unaware of the required settings, I literally spent hours trying different options. What I've tried so far:

Enabling/disabling SSL;
POP3 instead of IMAP;
Characters $ or % instead of the @, and of course:
Exact obeying of the official Google guides.

Of course, Gmail's security features to allow insecure login are applied.

Thank-you in advance for any help!

Best,
Canned Brain

If you figure this out.. that will be 50 percent of what i NEED TO use OS 9 for.. Plus, i assume the same settings will work under Tiger with Entourage. Please try to find those settings as the ones Google gives don't work.

Have you tested Netscape Messenger? It comes in Netscape Communicator 4.8.

I have not tried Outlook but this is what I use with the Classilla E-Mailer for my gmail account (POP):

pop.gmail.com
Port 995
Checked "Use Secure Connection (SSL)"

As for smtp:

smtp.gmail.com
Checked "Use a secure SMTP / STARTTLS connection, when available"
Port 25

And of course in the settings of your Google account you need to enable unsecure applications to be allowed to connect.

Good luck! (@Roman - this works with Entourage 2008 in OSX as well)

Thank-you very much, Bolkonskij!

Your advise helped me a lot. I simply had to use the Recaptcha on the newer computer, then login again on the old one, and it worked!  :)

Didn't see this mentioned (unless I'm blind and Command + F didn't see it)... but Basic HTML mode for Gmail's web interface works great in Classilla if you don't feel like messing around with a mail client and security settings.

However, mail accounts through my webhost (Tiger Technologies) work perfectly in Microsoft Entourage 2001 and OS 9 with the settings they provide.
