as i posted in my g4 chart... the highest geekbench2 score for *os9 booting* (excluding fw800s) powerpc stock cpu/build is 1070 for the dual g4 mdd 1.25

but, seen here, are some crazy high geekbench scores
probably results from overclocking... so this is what im bringing up for discussion.. these results.. lets take a look.

seems the higher scores from these cpus?

MAXPower G4 7447A & 7448

Quote
re: maxpower cpus -- "OS 9 and 7447A/7448 Processors: You will receive a cache error when
booting into OS 9 because this upgrade does not have L3 cache. Normal
operation will resume after error is acknowledged".

Sonnet Duet 7447A
http://www.sonnettech.com/publicfiles/pdfs/pdf_datasheets/duet_datasheet.pdf
Dual PowerPC G4 7447A CPUs running at 1.8 GHz
512KB speedy L2 cache **per processor** running at
processor speed (but no L3 cache?)

seems like both of them, lack L3 cache.. but the scores are above 1500s on the average for these cpus

the 7455 ones tho.. are these stock apple cpus? overclocked to all hell?
looks that way?? must hav some custom liquid cooling to achieve that?

http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench2/89050

ignoring the extreme top scores (as they are probably unstable extreme overclocks) this seems to be the highest score i can find for a 1.5ghz 7455/7455 mdd (oem apple cpu "stable" overclock?)
score: 1899

but this is of course a dual processor, i will try to see the highest score for a single processor (For curiousity sake)

the highest i can find for a single

http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench2/2407657
score: 1117
which also seems extreme because it says 2ghz...
this powerpc chip would explode at 2ghz after some time;) hehehe

remember the MDD 1.25ghz 2003 scores: score: 727

considering all of this i have a chance to get very cheaply (25$) a g4 sawtooth with a sonnet 1.2ghz cpu .. and ive looked this up
and it seems to come in at a bench of 614 which seems like it would be a good combination between
stability + PSU ATX compatibility (20pin atx)  + performance (benching just higher then a 933 QS!!!!)
... although i would have preferred the extra pci slot given in the quicksilver (4 pci) vs the sawtooths (3 pci)
but i guess the sawtooth offers 4x slots for ram vs 3x in the QS...?

i will have to look into making a QS-ATX cable adapter.. i have the 24pin atx extensions already to do it with.. i would just hhave to do the wiring!

This is a 7448. Despite of the fact that Geekbench don't identify correctly this chip, take a look at the L2 size.
And yes, the 7448 don't have any problem at 2.0 Ghz or even more. I know it very well, as I have one of those into one of my G4 sawtoth :)

Brand name: Newer Technology
Model: MAXPower G4
Options: 7447/7448 & Single/Double
Speed up to 2.0 Ghz

Price: up to 700$
Today are very hard to find and still are very expensive.
Its a pain that no 7448 card was ever made for MDD :(

The 7448 don't work as dual in Mac os 9 due to a incompatibility with  multiprocessor extension, in fac must be removed to let the system start. I think that is due to problems with CPU sleep software also managed with this extension.
In the other side 7447 can work as dual in MDD. As a curiosity Cameron Kaiser (the creator of Classilla, in which proyect I have made a little contribution) has one of them on his MDD and work on Mac os 9 as dual.

The no L3 cache warning at System startup can be easilly removed. Just removing ALRT ID −16505 in the System file :)

because of the faster DDR ram? & 167mhz bus?

My first post!

MacTron,
Can you provide some more detail on modifying the System file as mentioned above?

I just inherited a Sawtooth w/ 7447A, and OCD means that I must remove this error. Thanks!

You just have to open the System suitcase with ResEdit, find the ALRT ID −16505 and delete it :P . This alert box don't bother you any more   ;D ;D
