Are you running OS9 or OS8 on it? I was about to type something like, "The 9600 with the RAM and CPU upgrade isn't too far from what G4s can do". I bet it's a combo of OS8 requiring less resources, less extensions, and plus I make sure to use older versions of software since they always seem 'lighter'. Startup isn't as quick, and raw processing power for unstuffing and so on isn't as good as my G4, but other than that it's pretty much identical in speed to my 1.25ghz G4.

i had 9.22 on the b&w g3 450mhz.. i still dont have an os8.6 install cd. (havent botherd to download)
honestly i think 8.6 + 9.x would be about the same - i think u are experiencing the speed of the sata pci
i told u - it makes a huge difference in load times.. the actual real world disk speed of sata 150 is much improved over the ata bus of even the best g4.

i bet it feels just like a digital audio 533mhz-733mhz now with all those upgrades.
are u using it for pro tools TDM? or logic TDM?

I actually had my SATA drive and RAM in there already for a few days before I installed the CPU. The CPU made the biggest difference from what I can tell. The SATA drive helped, sure, but man I'm telling you, that 233mhz CPU bogged the system WAY down. The CPU can't keep up with the HD!  ;D

I'll always use Logic for midi only, and I use both Digital Performer and PT for audio only.

I have a very similar configuration than Syntho, a 8600 with a Sonnet at 500 Mhz. Despite the fact that I like a lot this OldWorld Computer, and even *if we think* on a G4 as just a G3 plus Altivec (more or less...), a real G4 -starting with a Sawtooth at 500 Mhz-are far more: A 100 Mhz system bus make a huge difference, plus AGP for video, PCI 64 bits, etc...
Please don't PM about things that are not private.

i should clock it back to 450 and do the test again to see the actual gain
