just brainstorming possible upgrades here for my ancient PBWSG3, but, does or did any such thing exist at any time? did this firmtek 1sm2 support OS9 booting?
i have a bunch of low-capacity older SSDs laying around which are great for upgrade projects like these.

if portability isnt important you can get a seritek 1sm2
and use it in combination with an external 2.5" or 3.5" sata disk drive
oops sorry i didnt read the post all the way thru ;) lol
as far as i know that device should support booting yes
heres the manual:
https://www.firmtek.com/download/manual/ST1SM2_Manual_Macintosh_v1.1.pdf
the manual says:
Note: The SeriTek/1SM2 is not compatible with PC Card slots with PCMCIA 16-bit interface
technology in early Macintosh notebooks. The SeriTek/1SM2 requires the newer 32-bit CardBus
interface.
so it probably wont work with anything ancient if it doesnt have 32bit cardbus unfortunately - this is news to me aswell
