Configuring Transmit ftp client in Sonoma

I have a MBPro M1 running UTM to emulate various OS's. I installed the preset OS 9.2 and it runs fine. I want to transfer files to the host machine using Transmit 5 on the host. It is asking for:  Address, username and Password...  Where do I find these in OS 9.2 ? Thanks.

Welcome to the forum and the happy world of OS 9 ;)

Compared to MacOS X, MacOS 9 does not have a built-in FTP or SSH server. So in addition to the network configuration required to make sure your host can ping the OS 9 env, you will need to install and run a FTP server software on the OS 9 or X side (it will be simpler to check the box on OS X in the sharing system preferences and use an old Transmit version on OS 9).

Thanks. I managed to put Transmit 1.6 on an image file and added it to the UTM settings as a drive for the guest VM. I installed it on the guest and, through sheer guesswork, managed to set it up and it works transferring files! It is a clunky process though. I'd prefer if i could set up Transmit 5 on the host and work with that to transfer files back and forth. Also I read somewhere that ftp transfers of files strip them of their "resource forks"... I guess that is the suffix on the end of a file name? Could be a major problem for me when reading data from old floppies...

Earlier on I managed, using an Ubuntu VM, to read and copy some ancient floppy discs onto the host M1 machine. I transferred these onto the OS 9.2 guest which is set up as a PPC G4 by UTM's default. I did this by putting them in a disc image and adding it as a drive. Clunky but it worked before I had any ftp working. So these ancient files on the VM are the ones I want to read on the host M1 machine. These files were created about 1994 in Filemaker Pro, MS Word and Aldus Pagemaker. In order to read them I guess I'll have to open them in later editions of these programs that are compatible with Mac OS Sonoma on the M1 machine. I guess I'll search for progs compatible with both OS 9.2 and OS X. Then when installed on the OS 9.2 VM open them and save them in a later format. Then transfer across and hopefully open in Sonoma.

Ressource fork is one half of every file you are creating/using under Mac OS 9! It IS "stripped away" if you are transferring any files to other file systems than HFS or HFS+, be it by mail, ftp, smb or whatever. This may not be dramatically with simple files like for example an image, in this case you will "just" have no icon anymore and Mac OS 9 will not know with which program to open it at double-clicking (plus some more missing metadata) but any executable/program will not work anymore. Thus you need to crate MacBinary (.bin) files or BinHex (.hqx) files before sending data from Mac OS 9 around. Easiest way is to get DropStuff, and stuff everything before sending it around via ftp or mail. BTW, the same counts for any USB stick that is (as usually) formatted in FAT32. Thus my USB sticks and external FW/USB enclosures have 2 partitions one FAT32 for exchange with other Operating Systems and one in HFS+ for direct Mac OS 9 usage.

Presumably I can put all the Pagemaker, Filemaker and Word files in a folder and use Dropstuff to compress it into one compressed file?
