News, Information & Feedback / Re: 254 guests 4 users online.

Well, if it helps, we have more members browsing around than that, for example when this thread was created, I was checking it without being logged in, so "4" users is actually "5", and I'm sure this applies to some others as well, so then it goes up to "6", then maybe "7"... But certainly not "200", I agree. :)

Well, if those damn otherwise-useless AI bots got enough data to figure out how to boot OS 9 on G5s, then let's inquire them how to do it until they get it right! But generally they won't even know what to do with mere REALbasic code, let alone what to say when I ask them for precise differences between behavior or even syntax across multiple REALbasic versions. So maybe they could help in booting a G5 by... year 2500, if people or Earth will even be around by then.

Thanks joevt, I've tried both non-serial methods. After running the following it lists out the entire device tree (it ends at the same device as it would if I just ran ` dev / ls`), then begins the `probe-all` command which results in the same "can't OPEN device" error.
Code: [Select]
dev / ls device-end
." [ probe-all"
probe-all
." ] probe-all"
install-console
dev / ls device-end
." [ banner"
banner
." ] banner"

.time-stamps and .time-stamps\ don't work for me, it returns ".time-stamps, unknown word"

News, Information & Feedback / Re: Thoughts on the future of Mac OS 9 Lives
« Last post by Knezzen on Yesterday at 01:02:52 AM »
I like that downloads are accesible again thru an Mac OS 9 machine. I could still download them from Windows or Mac OS X before, but for a purist user with only a Mac OS 9 machine (are you really that offuscated?) was a plus.

I understand that youtube links "break" compatibility with OS 9 browsers, but the forum was clearly richer and more visual when we had youtube links in screen. And the videos were clickable/watchable within the forum.

More than 10 "rich" post from me have been ruined (or screwed) with this "you have a Mac OS 9 browsable"post policy. There should be a place where youtube links and mini player are allowed.

I browse the forum 60 percent on my smartphone, 30 percent on a windows machine and 9 percent on Mac OS X. Only browse it on 9  to download attachments from post that I am afraid of it loose its fork.

Ditching youtube videos has made the forum some steps backward IMHO.

We could put a flag (Youtube Content) or something similar for the user that is running Mac OS 9 to not click in. Or make a zone where YT links are full and allowed.

I have no idea which policy you're referring to, but ALL plugins where disabled when the forum moved since it wouldn't run on newer server software with plugins enabled. Since then I have enabled the bookmarks plugin since it looks like it's compatible with the version of PHP we're now running for security reasons. I'm not disabling features to mess with anyone and I haven't specifically removed YouTube mini player support to cater for "purists".

So let's get things straight here.
  • I'm trying to get the site up and running on modern and secure server software to keep everyones passwords and login credentials safe.
  • I'm trying to get the site running on modern and secure server software to keep bots at bay.
  • I'm trying to clean up the forum structure to make it easier for newcomers to grasp what we're all about and get them to join in on the discussions here.

And still I get the feeling that some think that everything I do and all the changes are done with malicious intent. That all I want to do is disable features just because.

Try to see the larger picture here. Please.

And about your posts that got "ruined", Protools5LEGuy; post a link to one of them so I can see what shortcode is used for the mini player so I can narrow it down to which plugin that generates them and I'll have a look.

Machines looking very nice, seems like a great package for those not into hardware tinkering. Can you refer the buyers to OS 9 Lives as the place to hang out with their new OS9 Mini ? :)

It's become a true plague of the modern web. Especially if they call come in and start crawling and indexing your content all at once. I also dislike how most just disregard the contents of robots.txt files. You need to lock them out the hard way - or learn to live with it.

New Member Welcome / Re: G'day folks :))

Welcome to the forum Ashlander!  :)

I can relate - I also very much love the tangerine iMac G3 and its looks, always wanted one, couldn't afford it when it was new and never found one afterwards. :-)

So good luck with your dream :-)

Society is moving in the wrong direction anyway. "Buttons" are part of this. Interaction, the human element in general, is already too often reduced to "being liked" or not – with a simple click. I consider this "self-expression", the  reduction to feelings, to be really harmful. There should be no place for ratings in a forum like this. Good conversations and appreciative interaction will not come about through evaluations and a supposedly increased sense of self-worth ascribed by others. I find buttons seriously socio-politically dangerous and have therefore never used them. I would be delighted if the forum could do without them again in future.

I fully agree with you on that one too. No need for a like button for me, as ssp3 said, it's the interaction between the users that make a forum a forum.

You have to really screw a conversation to have no likes.

i am very thrifty with pressing the "like" button in forums like this.

it can make sense to express "i agree, i would have said the same" (i.e. upvote that one answer of which you think is the only right one among many posts to support the questioner) or eventually say "thanks" when someone obviously put a lot of effort into whatever.

but imho people tend ot overuse things like that, and for example always give a like when a post seems to be constructive, clever, funny, arbitraring disputes, the first post of a new user and so on, and sometimes also only because the weather is good. then it stops making sense because it simply says nothing.

i always compare the situation with giving tips in gastronomy. unlike in the US, in germany the "official" rule about tip is that you only give tip to waiters or other staff members for extraordinary extra services, but in practice almost everyone who can afford it gives like 5-10% in order to not stand out unpleasantly.

For example, I would have used the button on PT5LEG's post because it summarize what I would have replied ;D

Yeah, it's very convenient but this is exactly the problem IMO. People in general only press the like button and don't take time to form their own answer. The like button substitutes a real answer in text and discussions slow down to a halt.

Same here: it can be a useful way sometimes to agree with a comment without repeating it or just share appreciation without a fanboy post. That will/shouldn't replace a comment when there is something to add.

For example, I would have used the button on PT5LEG's post because it summarize what I would have replied ;D

If the wording of the button is to be different, technically there should be 2 of them (the main use-cases): "agree" and "thanks". The wording may vary but that's the kind of constructive feedback that would save a thread rhythm by not being expressed among contributions to the main topic.

I was just going to add this, perhaps the "thanks" button is less social media, I don't know if I've ever seen this button.
