Title: Digidesign SoftSynth?
Post by: porterclark on November 26, 2014, 08:08:24 PM
anybody seen a copy of this additive synth from same era as turbosynth?

i have just ordered sound accelerator II card for nubus mac IIsi and seems like it would be a pretty rad addition to the setup.

i was just reading about this just now
Digidesign SoftSynth
http://www.muzines.co.uk/articles/digidesign-softsynth-version-2-0/262
yes its a program from 1986/1987 for ATARI ST
early program developed by digidesign to turn a sampler into a synthesizer..
basically a SynthEngine for a sampler.. any sampler? i think any early 80s sampler..

Supporting the Emax, Roland S10, and Akai X7000 and S700 samplers (in addition to the already-supported Prophet 2000/2002, Mirage, Emulator II, Korg DSS1, and Akai S612/S900), and you have a nice little addition to an existing package.

I think I've got a few versions of it around here. IIRC SoftSynth and PowerSynth are versions of the same thing. The latter probably the PPC version, since that was a popular naming convention in the mid 90s. It's a non-realtime modular for old systems. My IIc/SampleCell setup got mothballed shortly after I set it up due to housing instability.

hi,
using it on Quadra 700, 24bit memory mode, nubus Sound Accelerator II.
Interesting textures.

Anyone got the manual?

The engine description (links above) reminds a bit on the Synclavier's basic sound elements.
I fiddled around with the latter recently on iPad/iPhone - interesting textures indeed...  8)
(not much interested in historic presets)
