News, Information & Feedback / Re: What's your opinion on the "like" button?
« Last post by DieHard on Yesterday at 09:47:46 AM »
Of course I "Like" it, that is why I added it.  I did not want to integrate/inject social media Mods, so the like button was kinda a compromise.  It's a tool, nothing more, where members can instantly get feedback (when another member thinks a one word post is too tedious), also it enables members to see what other members value the same topic; again, just a tool, if it's there and you want to use it great !  If not, fine, leave it hanging on the wall, a controversy is not needed on this one. Just add it and some may use it, some won't, "analysis paralysis" ins't really helping us on this one guys

Yes, Knez is doing a great job and it will take some time... the forum desperately needed php and other versions updates that I specifically dragged my feet on because I knew it would break many of the custom Mods I purchased and added years ago.

The main page had a dynamic frame based Mod that would display News, messages, stats, and other member info. and anchor this info in sub-pages; it was implemented way back in 2015 and whenever I tested forum updates, this was one mod that freaked out and stopped to work, as did other SMF Mods.

So literally 99% of the new issues could not be avoided when the forum got a code face-lift.  We had far too many security issues with the older SFM versions so trust me, we needed to update.  Chris helped me back in the day, manually modify code so we had some cool features like default alphabetical sorting of topics on certain download boards; but unfortunately, updates just replace the procedures with never versions, and thus wipes out any user modified code in the core areas.

That being said, I am sure we can add some new modern mods that will be compatible as time goes on; I am in the process of looking thru my invoices of what I purchased and to see if there are new versions of the mods.  At this point it is unfair to have Knez shell out cash for all these mods, so I suggest as I find each one, we can make a poll, and if it is wanted, then we can all pitch in.

I think .time-stamps is hidden in some Open Firmware versions. Two options:
1) setenv fcode-debug? true then restart
2) false to check-visible then try the .time-stamps command again.
Probably the first is preferable since you only have to do it once (unless you zap the pram).

probe-all does the following:
push-state
probe-pci
probe-ext-mac-io
probe-usb
probe-fw
finish-device-tree
pop-state

I suppose you can try probe-pci instead of probe-all. In that case, maybe remove banner so that the normal boot process will do probe-all. It should be smart enough not to repeat the probe-pci part again but I'm not sure.

In either case, you may want to use a catch so that if it fails, the rest of the nvramrc script is executed.

['] probe-pci catch if ." exception:" . . cr then

Ugh. This decision is not as easy, nor as black-and-white, as it can seem. Personally, I'm very torn over this one: There are very good reasons to include it, and very good reasons not to include it.

What can I say? Everyone here, on both camps, is right: on one hand, it can dilute the quality of discussion, and "dumb it down". On the other hand, it is a positive tool for acknowledgement of something without "side-tracking" the main discussion. Both points are true. We have no "right" or "wrong" answer here based on technicality alone.

You have to really screw a conversation to have no likes.

No. A conversation or, to be more precise, thread comments can go without a "Like" also simply because of not many people reading the thread, or the comment, even when you make a quality post or cover new ground that is, actually, appreciated. Another issue is that using "Like" requires a logged-in user, so even if you have your "admirers", they are "ghost admirers" who cannot express that they "Like" your posts. So @ssp3 actually has a point with that.

=====================

Personally, what I can say to contribute to this decision is our history:

I think the "Like" feature was added sometime around late 2019, perhaps a bit before or a bit later. Obviously, the forum functioned perfectly well without it for all this while.

When the "Like" feature and button were finally introduced, I feel as if it was mostly well-received, silently, and well-appreciated. In general, I think it brought more good than harm. Admitedly, I grew fond of it, as well, and I don't think it made me participate less, whether my posts were getting liked or not. It did make me show appreciation for people's posts which, otherwise, I would have said nothing in place if no "Like" system had been implemented. Of course, if there was something I REALLY liked, then I would say/write it, AND add the "Like" while at it (if the "Like" function is available).

So, in short, I think the "Like" feature served us well in practice, in helping us express ourselves a bit better, with minor drawbacks like others pointed out. Maybe we could have "misused" it, but from what I saw, it seemed to be used "correctly", unlike the braindead FaceBook et al. stuff.

Simultaneously... @Mat and the others are also right. It's really tough: there is no "right" decision, because we WILL have a tradeoff, be it one way or another. Which one is more worth it? I don't know.

But what I DO know is that we will be fine eitherway: we were fine before it was implemented, and we were fine during the time it was around, as well, so my conviction on this is 100% unshaken.

So I honestly leave this decision to all you guys, and you can count me as "neutral" on this. Maybe I slightly lean towards having it back, but honestly I'm completely fine with it eitherway. It's not that "I don't care", as the poll suggests, but rather "I care so much that I know we are fine eitherway, and there's not one uniquely-correct choice". :)

TL;DR I voted on "I don't care.".

Welcome! I'm a big iMac lover too, if only you were New Zealand based because I have a few parts iMacs collecting dust!
Good luck finding one  :)

Yes I mention it in the descriptions. I wouldn't be selling these without it! I ended up buying lots of non-workingG4 Minis and really getting into this now...

Knezzen I think we're all very happy and appreciative of your amazing work, and that there's just a few of the old features missing that we've become accustomed to.
Good things take time and I'm sure we'll see most of them make a comeback. You've taken on a big workload with this forum, and things like these do take a lot of time to implement. This thread has been a good space to vent any frustrations and I'm sure there's no malicious intent directed at you. It's a good space to note features that made things easier for us  :)

Here's one post I found today which seems to have broken styles, it may be related to ProToolsLEGuy's findings:

Keep up the good work, what you're doing is appreciated!!

News, Information & Feedback / Re: 254 guests 4 users online.

Well, if it helps, we have more members browsing around than that, for example when this thread was created, I was checking it without being logged in, so "4" users is actually "5", and I'm sure this applies to some others as well, so then it goes up to "6", then maybe "7"... But certainly not "200", I agree. :)

Well, if those damn otherwise-useless AI bots got enough data to figure out how to boot OS 9 on G5s, then let's inquire them how to do it until they get it right! But generally they won't even know what to do with mere REALbasic code, let alone what to say when I ask them for precise differences between behavior or even syntax across multiple REALbasic versions. So maybe they could help in booting a G5 by... year 2500, if people or Earth will even be around by then.

Thanks joevt, I've tried both non-serial methods. After running the following it lists out the entire device tree (it ends at the same device as it would if I just ran ` dev / ls`), then begins the `probe-all` command which results in the same "can't OPEN device" error.
Code: [Select]
dev / ls device-end
." [ probe-all"
probe-all
." ] probe-all"
install-console
dev / ls device-end
." [ banner"
banner
." ] banner"

.time-stamps and .time-stamps\ don't work for me, it returns ".time-stamps, unknown word"
