Title: Trying to install OS9 on a G3 900MHz iBook (not happening).
Post by: startech on August 23, 2018, 09:48:53 PM
Greetings,

I having a multitude of issues trying to install OS9 on a G3 900MHz iBook. When I purchased the laptop, it had OS X 10.4.11. I used the original iBook software install disc (OS 9.1, CD version 2.1, 691-3084-A) to wipe the system.

I used disk utility to format the hard drive and now OS 9.1 cannot be installed…

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for your time!

Ok, you say that it cannot be installed, but what is the system actually doing when you try? What do you see?

I'd try testing the optical drive with another disc. Maybe option-power booting to check for startup volumes.
And I'd make triple-sure that I ticked the "install Mac OS 9 drivers" checkbox in Disk Utility.

We have all the bootable diagnostics here on the site, make a boot CD and test all hardware first...

Try this One:
http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/topic,816.0.html

If not, use this:
http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/topic,814.0.html

Please report your exact issues with the install, also, if the hard drive is original, you are way overdue for a failing one, just because you bought it and it was booting to OS X does NOT mean the hard drive is A-OK

Here you can find the original CDs for that machine:
http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/ibook-g3-early-2003-software-media-set-mac-os-v922-mac-os-x1024
Installed on my iBook G3/900, runs great.

Tried everything.

Mac OS 9.0 (original OS disc), OS 9.1 (original OS disc), OS 9.2.2, and I Tried the original system restore discs again. I made sure and format the hard drive every time and install Mac OS 9 drivers as well.

Error message:
This program cannot run on your computer. See the documentation for more information.

Pic attached of my issues.

Are there any techs here I can send my machine to? I live in a technological dead zone in NE Ohio and I cant find anyone local for help. I've tried posting on craigslist for repairs and the local computer shops do not work on OS 9.........

Go to open firmware by holding Cmd+Option+O+F when you boot up, have the CD in the computer.

Type these lines in.

Code: [Select]
dev /
.properties
" PowerMac1,1" encode-string " model" property
" PowerMac1,1" encode-string " MacRISC" encode-string encode+ " MacRiSC2" encode-string encode+ " MacRISC3" encode-string encode+ " Power Macintosh" encode-string encode+ " compatible" property
boot cd:,\\:tbxi

(each line is separate so make note of that).

This will make the OS and the installer think you are installing onto a G3 blue and white for that one boot, and should get round that error message.

If that doesn't work try the Universal install ASR disc at the downloads board.

edit, just noticed that you have an iMac CD in that computer, so try a different CD to the one you had in when you took that picture, along with those lines above.

I tried this verbatim as well:

dev /
.properties
" PowerMac1,1" encode-string " model" property
" PowerMac1,1" encode-string " MacRISC" encode-string encode+ " MacRiSC2" encode-string encode+ " MacRISC3" encode-string encode+ " Power Macintosh" encode-string encode+ " compatible" property
boot cd:,\\:tbxi

No dice.

Worth a shot… download one of the following: Mactron’s Bootable Rescue CD & Disk Repair.
(The absolute “Gold Standard”.)

http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/topic,1657.0.html
OR:
http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/topic,1654.0.html

IF that doesn’t work… and you absolutely must have original install/restore discs…
check out that link to Macintosh Garden provided here earlier by Zach and download the originals.

Seems that I have an 800 MHz G3 iBook (that I’ve never examined).
Booting it just now, it has a version of OS 10.4.11 and a version of 9.2.2
(MacTron's version) both installed and bootable. If for some reason
Mactron’s Bootable Rescue CD doesn’t do the trick for you, let me know.

These iBooks originally shipped with OS 9.2.2 so it’s not a complete surprise
that 9.1 or 9.0 won’t load and/or boot (I just tried OS 9 = no-go).
BUT it does boot from MacTron's disc.

Drive Setup on the OS 9 install disc is Version 1.8.1, while MacTron’s disc
has Version 1.9.2. (10.4.11 has Version 10.5.6.)

So, if you want to install both OS 10.4.11 AND OS 9.2.2… download
the Mac Garden disc set. If you only want OS 9.2.2… try the MacTron
“Gold Standard”.

Good luck.

I tried the MacTron discs and they dont work. I purchased an external burner and toast titanium. I followed these directions to burn OS :

This is a way that can be used with different burning applications (they just have to be able to install the necessary wrapper code to make a volume bootable):

*start Disk Copy (usually located in the Utilities-folder), select Image>>>Create new Image... from the menu

* fill in a name for the CD, make sure that a size of 663,000K (CD-ROM 12cm, full) is selected and "Mount Image" is checked (checking the "Zero blocks"-option also is a good idea)

*save the image (usually to the desktop)

*you can now use a Mac OS installer (your original Mac OS install CD, for example) to install a System Folder to that disc image (once installed, you can also update that system using any [download] updater) and add all applications you want (try to install them whenever possible, because simply copying things over will not always work)

*when using Mac OS 9.2.x, remove these files from the System Folder: "Classic", "Classic Support" and "Classic Support UI"

*now run those applications on the disk image which require registration (e.g. a serial number) - otherwise they will ask for registration when booted from the CD and therefore might not work

*disable any AutoUpdate- / LiveUpdate-features, as the applications on the CD can't be updated anyway once they've been burned

*when running applications from the disk image, some applications might create preference files in the System Folder you are currently booted to - in that case, just copy those preference files to the System Folder on the disk image afterwards

*now you should remove anything that may have been stored in "Startup Items" or "Shutdown Items" inside the disk image's System Folder; you might also want to remove some useless control panels, extensions, etc. and set the Energy Saver control panel to "never go to sleep"; also set all other preferences/control panels to your preferred settings (once again, you might need to copy files over from the System Folder you're booted to for these changes to take effect)

*when finished, burn the CD [when using Toast Titanium, set it to "Other", select "Mac Volume", click "Select", choose the disc image from the menu, select "bootable" and click "Record"] - in case you're given the choice, make sure to select "Mac OS Standard (HFS)" volume format, not "Mac OS Extended (HFS+)"

If you can boot into OS X, burn the ISO or Toast file through Disk Utility to a blank CD then boot that.

Or try this if that doesn't work.

Got the original restore discs that shipped with the machine. The iBook "will not" recognize the OS9 install discs. I tried booting holding C and I also tried holding in the option key on a different occasion to see if it would recognize the install discs.

The iBook will recognize the O SX 10.2 Os restore discs...

I think the OS 9 restore CD's are not bootable, and are to be used from OS X. You install OS X, then when you are at the desktop, pop in the OS 9 restore disc, and install the package, then restore OS 9, and other applications. If you need to restore OS 9 from these CD's and you are on 10.4 Tiger, you have to use an updated version of the OS X Apple Software Restore Program: http://web.archive.org/web/20080102235426/http://docs.info.apple.com:80/article.html?artnum=301468
(look for "Software Restore for Tiger")

The Software Restore app, on the Restore CD you have, only recognises CD's in Jaguar, so here is the updated version link (from the page above) to the one that works on Tiger:

http://supportdownload.apple.com/download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/Mac_OS_X/downloads/061.xxxx.20051031.restore/SoftwareRestore.dmg

Install this package then open Software Restore, if it doesn't auto open, then pop in your os 9 restore CD, restore, then asks for 2nd disc, so put in restore CD 2, then when it asks do 3. Then you can open startup disk pref pane, and select OS 9 from your hard disk.

This is how I originally installed OS 9 on my PowerBook Ti.

HI,
I have the G3 i book 700 dual usb, restored graphics chip.
make sure on format that apple partition format is selected,(APF)
it will not boot with GUID nor MBR, see options in disk utility.tick box for 9 drivers.
most of the CDs in the drive Os9, 8,  7, should show up as disks on pressing Alt after the sound.
select Os9 as boot and enter .

"Shrimp boat's a-comin' and me wan go home..."

Is it absolutely necessary to have a version of OS X present on these G3 iBooks in order to load / run OS 9.2.2? Shooting here for a standalone “OS 9.2.2” only G3 iBook.

Just examined using both Mactron’s Bootable Rescue CD AND the Universal 9.2.2 Install disc here… and both (while bootable) only display the working desktop at 50% size on screen. Obviously something in the video-display department is missing? Monitor control panel “identifies” the display as “Monitor 2” although there is no “other” monitor attached. (And the “ATI Graphics Accelerator” extension is disabled at startup.)

This G3 iBook has the ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 GPU.

Of course, have not gone through with the OS 9.2.2 install from either of the above discs after seeing that reduced screen symptom… but is it simply a matter of installing additional, particular ATI extension(s) / enablers… or again, must some form of OS X also be present?

Oh Great Gods of the G3 iBooks, speak unto us all.

With my Titanium Book, to install OS 9, you have to install OS X first if you use the original disc, but if you want you can boot the laptop from an external disk, or put it into target disk mode, pop the CD into a machine that can access the CD, go to the CD in the finder, press command+shift+g and type in

.images

(no / before that by the way)

And all the images you can restore are there, you can mount OS9General, and copy the contents from the disk image to the disk you want OS 9 on, and boot it, and bless it if necessary

sudo bless -folder9 "/Volumes/VOLUMEHERE/System Folder"

Title: G3 iBook - 9.2.2 Install
Post by: FdB on August 26, 2018, 12:02:35 PM
Using similar Apple G3 iBook, OS 10.2 installer discs (from Mac Garden) was able to install 10.2 on a small partition but in an attempt to install OS 9.2.2 from the same disc set, it insisted that 9.2.2 must be installed on the same partition as OS 10.2. Au contraire…

Simply popped in Mactron’s Bootable Rescue CD, double-clicked the “Mac OS 9.2.2.img” and when that opened, simply drug the contents to the second partition. Ejected the CD, chose 9.2.2 in the Sys Prefs / Startup Disc and rebooted under OS 9.2.2. Done. Full screen fun.

yes this is the way the quicksilver 933mhz restore disks work - exactly the same. you can then choose to move the 9.22 install to another drive via drag n drop. but u have to installt he original hd contents back to the combo of 10.2 / 9.22
and then u can either upgrade osx to 10.3 or 10.4 (reccommended) or just erase the osx install (i wouldnt)

what i do is move the os9 install to a new partition or drive right away after install (talkng about my QS here)

OK, thanks for at least testing it, so the HD appears to be fine, which is great considering those iBooks suck to take apart, better give yourself at least 3 hours if you need to one day :(

Now, we move forward...
Diehard has a mild headache and looks down at the second cup of coffee...

Didn't we not create a a Universal 9.2.2 as a bootable CD (with all the latest updates) to make it an easy breezy install for those that have restore disks (like the MDD) that require OS X first before installing OS9 ?
Oh Yeah... hear it is:
http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php/topic,2109.0.html

Now, if that CD does not work for some reason, we have a universal (should work with all 9.1 era macs) factory stock Apple 9.1 CD (bootable), and all original Apple image here:

I am at loss to understand what is on the original iBook CDs that is needed so badly... maybe it is a valid need, please enlighten us :)

I am at loss to understand what is on the original iBook CDs that is needed so badly...

Just now, with OS 10.2 resident on this iBook’s first partition… option-booted with the Universal 9.2.2, single partitioned and then, using that ASR… installed a standalone OS 9.2.2. Only caveat is that the Universal disc boots and screen-displays @ 50% …but upon reboot after install, screen is full-size.

Not certain what is on the iBook install CD, other than the possibility of some OS X “enabler” that allows certain “other” CDs to be recognized / booted. Startech wiped his original 10.4 with an OS 9 or 9.1 install disk and possibly negated such “other” CD recognition / boot capability. (Much like the olde MDD scenario.) Afterwards, he couldn’t get the iBook to recognize anything other than the OS 10.2 restore discs.

At any rate, this iBook is now running solo OS 9.2.2. The Universal 9.2.2 CD works very well indeed, as long as you haven’t wiped 10.2 completely before attempting it’s use and you don’t get “spooked” by the initial 50% display.

And yes, like macStuff… I prefer to have 10.4 on a second partition. But, this iBook is leaving my workbench NOW!

that image was only the one that die-hard made. i had planned on making one focused on using ableton live as the main DAW app.

Shirley you did not mean “mindless”? (Double-negative entendre.)

Feigned Farfisa snobbery?

Both the Farfisa and the early VOX organs belong to that esoteric und very highly-select group of upper-echelon instruments known as: “Instruments-of-Unbridled-Passion”! (Ranking right up there with the accordian, the flutophone and kalimba!) Push any of the aforementioned through a Leslie cabinet and well… there IS true bliss und absolute sheer, diaphanous nirvana! double dutch because of what? because i paired it with the adjective "italian" already so that further explanations that it is shit might be unneccesary?
