from march 2004

New style, new sounds, new inspiration!

reFX presents VANGUARD, a new breed of virtual analog synthesizers.
VANGUARD is the long awaited replacement for your old 19" hardware gear
which will remain unused after you¥ve tried VANGUARD.

VANGUARD is a complete new product. reFX put all knowledge and experience
that has been collected over the past years into this projects and the
result is audible: virtual analog synthesis made a big step forward.

VANGUARD combines the good old analog synthesizer idea with the latest
technology: all analog devices of classic synthesizers are emulated by
high-quality DSP (digital signal processing) functions. reFX spent a lot
of time programming the synthesis functions as good as possible: the
result is a warm and rich sounding synthesizer plugin with all the
 benefits of todays digital technology.

VANGUARD is more than just a simple synthesizer. It is equipped with 31
different type of oscillators, including uncommon digital oscillators with
fresh modulation options. There is also a huge selection of filters: 13
filter types are onboard with different slopes and including a new kind of
 combined dual-filter variations.

In need of inspiration? No problem for VANGUARD - the trancegate and
arpeggiator can help you out! The trancegate is a 16-step gate to create
rhythmic gated patterns and the arpgeggiator comes with inspiring patterns
and several play modes. In addition to these creative tools VANGUARD is
equipped with a delay and reverb.
checkit!

If you know more about Nexus...let me know!

Confirmed: There aren't a Mac Os 9 version.
... and this text was extracted from 1.0.9 version manual:

Minimal Mac system requirements
§ Mac G4 800MHz or better / Mac Intel 1.4 GHz or better
§ Minimum of 512Mb RAM
§ Hard drive space required: 3Gb
§ Operating system: Mac OSX Version 10.4.8 or later
§ Graphics (minimum resolution): 16-bit 800x600
§ Host: Any application with either VSTi support (e.g. Cubase SX) or AU (AudioUnit) support (e.g. Logic)

v1.0.9 comes after v1.0.3 which was confirmed for mac os 9 from this documentation above.. its also possible there were two packages created with seperate copy of the requirements written for each 'version'.

wait it looks like mactron was talking about nexus?

That's what I think of it...

Juno X2 is the most impressive sounding VST synth ever made for Mac Os 9... but is too limited.
I always thought that Vanguard isn't so limited... and if it preserve the Juno X2 sound, Vanguard MUST be the best!

it has really nice filters, but that probably has something to do with the filters originally not beeing by refx.

he seems to have "lended" them by a colleague and they ended up shouting at each other in the kvr forums. :P

are you satisfied with the envelope? i prefer to use gate plug-ins with it instead of the ADSR.

vanguard .. is not really better, but thats just an opinion.

... well, I have all the pieces of two MDD's all around me... several CPU modules and a hot iron solder... due to my overclocking activities...

So in short: Vanguard is one of the best virtual synth for Mac os 9.
I thought Vanguard Will be the best, but it is not. Any way it is one of the 4 best :)
I had to read the user manual to see all his capabilities, but the first impression is that it has the best quality sound but it takes a lot of CPU power.  :(
My first virtual synth of choice is NI FM7. Vanguard have to fight against impOSCar to the second place IMHO.

Let's going to read the user manual.

BTW, I'm really surprised with PlastiCZ: simplicity and impressive sound.
Title: Re: refx vanguard
Post by: IIO on September 08, 2014, 10:02:04 AM

hrhr, my number 1 is the PPG, as it is my default (placeholder?) synth due to its low CPU.

soundwise there is no doubt that imposcar and oddity are the winners on OS9.

well about vanguard my position was mentioned above. i havent used it during the last 15 years, and i think that will not change. and as it seems, some of you will also not use it to make music but rather discuss it. :P

btw if you remember what you said in the midi thread about simplicity ... thats how i look at synths and fx, too. kontakt 5 or blue 2 come with faaaaar too much options for my taste.

Post by: arjen_1 on September 08, 2014, 12:50:07 PM
Hi,

Just tested Vanguard! I can confirm it takes lot of CPU power. However this is only at startup?!? After a while CPU load declines (same program). At startup Vanguard is buggy. In my case it doesn't produce any audio unless I load a different VSTi in slot 1 first. Then all works fine. The sound is BIG EDM style. (programming by Vengeance.de) No wonder this a must have for most trance producers. Should have some more presets IMHO. Definitely one of the best sounding VSTi's on OS9.

Plasticz was a surprise. I love it's simplicity and clear sound. Holds up against Vanguard too.

In other words....a great addition to my setup. Thanks guys!

Arjen

Although high on the learning curve (unless you want to use just the presets), I think Native Instruments Absynth deserves a high rating in the sound quality, stability, and uniqueness category. No other synth can produce, IMO, the variety of the sonic landscape that Absynth can… from classic synths emulations to "what the fuck is that sound"  I heard a four song demo with just Absynth and Battery and it was pretty hard to believe at the time… however, I do have to mention that the synth bass lines were EQed via a real Outboard Pultec, and an outboard 1960s chamber reverb was used on many of the Lead synths parts and lastly all tracks were fed into separate Neve channel strips (that I could not identify, but were turned into rack mount gear…crazy).

In the "free" category… Crystal is a pretty cool tool to have around, even if it's just for transitional effects from one song section to another.

Update: Vanguard is almost unusable while using the first published serials. After a approx. 15 minutes the plugin stops playing (like it's in time-limited demo mode). Second it randomly kills all audio with pops and clicks.

However after a second install using the second published serials....No problems at all!  :o

I'm totally agree with this too, but...
BUT:
I don't like the sound of Arturia, (CS 80, Moog) nor Virsyn (Tera, Cube). Fogged, no bright sound no good basses. I prefer the sound of NI Fm7, impOSCar, some reFX, or NI absynth.
This last one is in my opinion the best sounding of all VST instruments available for Mac Os 9, is a shame that it have a ugly and alien interface, and the patches always try to sound too "acid" to my taste.
Just an opinion.

(see,e mactron, this is another example where i would love to learn applescript. it would be great to have a tool which can cut long names and convert them to paths. so that
:DJ Gazza Boi Intrepid Soundwave Soundbank Vol 1.fxb
would be put in a folder and be renamed lik this:
:DJ Gazza Boi Intrepid Soundwave:Soundbank Vol 1.fxb)
to make it more useful on OS9 – or in general

I have to admit that i don't use AppleScript. But it is easy to use, AFAIK.

May be you have to be a few minutes with it ...
LOL

filesonic has been gone for a very long time ? (since at least 2011) surely u must know?
plus its not a good idea to be pasting warez links in our forum that is indexed by google..
i think it would be best to remove these links
this is not how we operate here up to now and would probably be a good idea to keep that sort of thing
out of discussions here
this guy IIO has me on his "ignore list" because hes too cool for me...
so someone else better tell him this

arjen´s kids can now dance daily 24/7 until christmas.

at christmas we then give him the presets for pro-52, so that he is ready for 2015.

please stop posting warez links on the forum
like i said if u want to attach a small file to the post thast fine but no links to external file sharing sites please
this has already been discussed on the vault zone re: muso thread

http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=1556.msg6822#msg6822

it would be a much better technique to make a .sit file of these files and post that as an attachment
but no links to warez / filesharing sites please

one link is one thing..
but posting big long lists of warez type links on our board
is not what we have done here from the start
and its not the type of thing we should be doing now or in the future

LOL! They will. On behalf of my two boys....many thanks.  -afro-
However most of the sites are blocked and untrusted. Would prefer .sit too.

i once build an app which is similar to what NI did with kore some years later. you could build banks from presets there and collect banks into a rudimentary form of library-on-disk, os that you were able to borwse though thousands of presets and listen to them just as with the usual midi librarians. you could also mix, merge and morph presets, rename them and compare different files to get rid of doubles. my main idea was that you can use it to compile yourself custom banks from presets out of other banks.
it is too idiosyncratic and only works for myself, but maybe it would be about time that i fix this finally and make it a proper app.
