It works. The installer says [no k] on it but it works anyway. When I patch the program using the patcher, it crashes every time I open the patched file. Hmm...

Maybe the program is already patched somehow? It's an installer though so I don't see how... unless for some reason it's working because I already have 2.0 installed!

I'm not sure how I got this working on my OS9 system but I'd like to get it working again. The patcher doesn't seem to work and the instructions are vague. I thought that by having 2.0 installed it made it work, but I did the same thing again and it keeps telling me I need an authorization diskette.
Title: Re: Unisyn 1.5
Post by: Syntho on August 30, 2014, 05:43:36 AM
The patcher program included in that download link supposedly patches the program and makes a copy of it. The info on the patcher seems to indicate that after you run the patched program, it will authorize your HD and then you can run the unpatched version. Even though I patch the program and run the patched version, it still says that I need to authorize it with a diskette.

I have no idea how I got it working but I suspect that my copy of Unisyn 2.0 authorized my HD and allowed 1.5 to work.

Can someone test this out?

It won't load on my SATA drives since I have a PCI SATA card. It tells me that the destination disk doesn't exist. As soon as I load up my SCSI drive and try to authorize that one, it works 100%. I can actually currently run Unisyn from my SATA drive as long as I've got at least one HD in my system previously-authorized. However I leave my SCSI drive disconnected since it's LOUD, so turning off my SCSI drive won't allow me run it from my SATA drive.

I've got to figure out a workaround for copying over that authorization to one of my SATA partitions.

If you don't want the SCSI drive, pull out from inside the computer.  Turning on and off a drive is bad idea.

Any way, sorry Syntho but I can't help you. I really don't understand you setup...

i dont think the pci card would cause such issues.
if u look in system profiler it shows up as a scsi drive aswell
so that doesnt make any sense at all.

Regardless of what it is, Unisyn isn't liking the SATA PCI card + SATA drive combo. It's fine on an internal SCSI drive, and I think it did better using IDE as well as long as it was internal. The exact error it gives me is, "Error while specifying your authorization. Specified volume doesn't exist. Result Code -35".

I wonder if I could bypass this with a SATA to SCSI adapter, if they even make one of those. I also have a USB/SATA adapter but I'm thinking that won't work at all seeing as USB was new at the time.

it definately says it supports the 9600 on the box i have it in my hands as im writing this
but one thing i will note is that it says "mac os 9.0 through 9.2" and "mac os x version 10.3 or later"
it doesnt say it supports 8.6 on the box
this is the reason why i told u to go for the acard adapter
because the acard explicitly had support for 8.6

so that would be the cause of your problem right there
u cant use that tempo serial ata with os8.x

People are using this to run System 7 but there aren't any guarantees or support. The OS8/OS9 support thing doesn't matter anyway, I booted into OS9 and I get the exact same thing. Everything is working 100%, it's just that Unisyn itself doesn't like this PCI card regardless if it's OS9 or not.

it does matter, why do u think they say we only support it on os 9 because they dotn want to do technical support for all the problems and strangeness that can occur... u should have listened to me and got the ATA133 raid card by acard for that older system dude.
it was only 20$.. *sigh*

I've just installed a SATA card in to a 8600AV (upgrade to a G3@500), and now the computer no longer start up, even after the SATA card was removed ...
Title: Re: Unisyn 1.5
Post by: Syntho on August 31, 2014, 07:48:11 AM
Maybe it's not recognizing the proper boot disk? Try booting off of a CD. I've read quite a few people putting those Sonnet Tempo SATA cards into their 9600 machines and they work fine. mine does too with the exception of that one authorization thing with Unisyn.
Title: Re: Unisyn 1.5

The 8600 is working fine now and booting from a SSD connected to a SATA card.

And Unisyn 1.5 is authorized and working Ok. Now I'm going to unplug the full SCSI chain. Let's see what happens ...

Now I'm going to unplug the full SCSI chain. Let's see what happens ...
Without SCSI, Unisyn 1.5 does not work.

I'd made another test, Authorize it -on the same boot disk- in another computer and work fine, until I've installed them on the 8600...
So it may be an incompatibility between Unisyn 1.5 and OldWorld PowerMacs without SCSI.

Title: Re: Unisyn 1.5
Post by: Syntho on August 31, 2014, 10:36:13 AM
I just ran a buttload of tests myself and the problem appears to be the lack of SCSI. I authorized a couple partitions on my G4 on the SATA drive and all was working. I hoped that that would authorize the partition that I installed OS8.6 on, but it doesn't.

I've been looking for a copy of the diskettes but one doesn't seem available.

Now that I think of it, I'm not sure having the diskettes to authorize it would even help. I guess it means I've got to buy a SCSI drive. A QUIET one.

Title: Re: Unisyn 1.5
Post by: Syntho on October 01, 2014, 01:29:54 AM
Unisyn 1.5 seems to need a restart after every use. If I'm freshly-booted, Unisyn boots fine. But when I close it, then try to reopen it later, it gives me that type 2 or type 3 error. I have to restart every single time I want to boot it so my workaround is to do just that - restart every time I need to use it. This is the most ghetto software ever!  -afro-

checking the requirements for unisyn v1.5 i see the followng:
http://www.motu.com/techsupport/technotes/unisyn-1.5-system-requirements
Quote
System Requirements for Unisyn 1.5

Unisyn version 1.5 has the following system requirements:

For Mac:
2 MB RAM or more
Mac OS version 7.1 to 9.2.2; Mac OS X is not supported (Unisyn version 2.1 is required)

For Windows:
IBM PC or compatible
MIDI driver installed for MIDI interface which will be used with Unisyn
Windows 3.1, 95, 98, ME, or 2000; Windows XP and later are not supported

the requirements for unisyn v2.0 also say its compatible with mac os7-9
http://www.motu.com/techsupport/technotes/unisyn-2-system-requirements/
so, it seems that BOTH v1.5 + v2.0 are for macos7-9
so im assuming that one could use EITHER VERSION..

do any experienced users know any reason NOT to use Unisyn 1.5?
is there any compatibility issues?
does anyone know when unisyn v1.5 was updated to v1.52?
was this a modern update? (in the era of 9.22) or a not so modern update? (prior to mac os 9 release)

from checking facts, i can see that Unisyn v2.02 was released in (March 2003)

according to this page, 1.52 was already out as of (Sep 2000) so the v1.52 update date must be before that time
maybe in early 2000? or late 1999?

checking this image carefully does show a copyright date of 1999!

http://www.cloudfactory.org/pipermail/motu-mac/2000-November/016799.html
this page claims :

Because of PACE, you have to get installer CD from MOTU.
Because of PACE, Uni 1.52 is not a patch release.
Read on...
so i guess thats why i cant find an update patcher file for unisyn v1.5 to unisyn v1.52

you need the entire unisyn 1.52 cd! does anyone here have a copy?
Title: Re: Unisyn 1.5

It works. The installer says [no k] on it but it works anyway. When I patch the program using the patcher, it crashes every time I open the patched file. Hmm...

the installer says [no k] to indicate that its original.. ie: not modified

the [k] can mean it IS a crack (patcher)
or the [k] can mean it has already been cracked
but usually if its already cracked they use [k'd] to show that

anyway i cant get the unisyn 1.5 to work
i patched the file but no dice
it still asks for a response code and errors out

maybe it doesnt work on system 7

why wouldnt they be.. its A Patch Librarian Software.. transmits patches to synth hardware..
"we've come a long way" - are u speaking for all those people who have abandoned hardware synths??

i have alot of heroes that i respect that used to make amazing music (in my opinion anyway) and when i hear their NEW stuff made on i7s /w VSTs - it puts me to sleep. while they are polished pro works.. they are also sonically uninteresting... just sounds completely different then the stuff they made in 80s + 90s.. but when you think about it of course it sounds different..  the recording method is different (straight to hard disk instead of tape) the mixing is different (virtually inside the computer instead of using mix console) the instruments are different....the effects are different..

hardware synths dont go out of style / become redundant
they just become more vintage:)

the reason im interested in unisyn 1.5x is because it (should) works on os8.6
and the other 2.x cd i believe requires os9.22

Read 6000? What does that mean?

Man, I threw Unisyn out the window and never looked back. Holy SHIT was it a bitch to get running solidly on my system. I learned that I can only have either MOTU's FreeMidi system or OMS installed on my Mac at once. Combining them will lead to a god damned disaster! If you're using DP/Unisyn and nothing else, you may get it working fine. I spent 2-3 months trying to get my rig solid until I gave up. OMS with Galaxy, SVP and Pro Tools is what I run permanently. I don't even use Logic anymore. Best system I've ever had and I hope to have it until I drop.

If I remember correctly, the reason it didn't work the first time around was that I got a bad copy. I have a good copy somewhere that works for sure though. Even the good copy I remember having to try it a few times to get it to work. I don't remember exactly how this worked, but what I do remember is that Unisyn absolutely expects to see a SCSI drive (an actual SCSI drive). Even if the invisible authorization file is on a SATA or IDE drive, Unisyn won't launch unless there's physically a SCSI drive in your system. Don't ask, because I don't know.

I also remember some weird MOTU driver conflict I had. I couldn't even get my system to boot until I removed that MOTU extension. God, it was hell. HELL. For months. I almost have panic attacks just thinking about it.
Title: Re: Unisyn 1.5
Post by: macStuff on April 10, 2018, 04:42:10 AM
i think u should know by now that one mac users experience does not equal the next mac users experience

conflicts ARE a serious pain in the ass..
but most of the time the real error lies between keyboard + chair :) or at least in their lack of experience with a given software package

ie: perhaps a mishappen result of combination of software.. or like u said "bad copy"
that was not packaged properly, possibly missing few required files here or there..

it sucks that your personal experience scraping together unofficial + non-registered versions of their software. (its to be expected i guess when finding 20 year old software for free on the internet! lol) but i would have to say there are alot of people that probably bought the software.. got up +  running, received the tech support they needed + went about their business!

just because you personally had more luck with a diffferent patch librarian doesnt mean that unisyn sucks.. it means u personally had difficulty for some presently undetermined reason..
theres all kinds of old patch/librarian software.. i mean really these are programs that have disected some detailed midicode and made it into "system" to be able to load + save instrument patches
u can do this with all kinds of different vintage pcs.. frm DOS to the Apple II to the Atari ST

we can look back on them and go wow! thats old and ancient.. who would ever want to use that!!!
or we can.. just actually use them! because yes the midi codes are still the same..
it doesnt matter how old the software is..whether or not its usefull to you comes down to..
does it let me load some patches into my instrument?? does it let me save my current patch for recall later?
if it works, then its usefull

like u kind of eluded to in your post.. there are conflicts + issues that can arise if you try to install ALL SOFTWARE on the same machine.. as opposed to being a 100% motu user with only freemidi iinstalled (no OMS) and using all the motu software.. theres many many users out there that DID follow this practice...installing only 100% motu apps.. or they were 100% in the opcode camp using OMS + all the opocde hardware + software.. or they were 100% into the logic camp, with AMT8 + unitor2 + logic software + sound diver etc

similarly to how one would not want os9 or osx leopard on the same box... u have to pick and choose. ok am i going to use this box for a logic setup? or a SVP setup? some things can co-exist peacefully.. other things are oil + water like trying to run osx + os9 on the same box.. are just always going to be problematic so easier to just sidestep the issue to avoid conflicts completely and save yourself headaches + wasted time

but it does seem that oms tends to cause less problems than freemidi
this is most likely why it became (and remained) the standard rather than being eclipsed by freemidi
motu i dont think are evil for having made their own system.. they just wanted their full hands in their own clay to control their own environment.. thats understandable..

im not 100% freemidi/motu expert myself but just because im unaware/uneducated about the complexities of a given software package doesnt mean u should want to publicly bash it!
but it is good to give users a warning not to try to combine certain softwares on the same box.. can lead to days of pulling out your hair..

if theres anything i learned frm using computers.. its that 99.99999% of the time theres usually a REASON for things working or not working... and it seems like magic hocus pocus voodoo untill u discover the actual reason but its there!! hiding somewhere..

hi,
ok i made one attempt to image the 'auth' disk but it failed.  i used the package thats on here... imaged it and then used norton disk doctor to make a copy.

i can try again, if the image succeeds i can load it up.

its not on CD, its pre-cd, but i find that Unisyn 1.14 is still useful for earlier 68k machines and also it is the only version Unisyn i can get to successfully work with 'bulky' transfers to my Microwave 1.

my friend i spoke of is a apple II/GS freak who works for the bank of america
he has specialized hardware for making copies of auth floppies
if u were to send him the disk in the mail he can create multiple copies using his equipment

you shouild still be able to make copies of the floppies using diskcopy 6.23 or whatever
or even using other floppy imaging software.. but it still wont work to authorize the app

are they 1,44mb floppies? or 800k disks?

was this on your 9600? with which os? can you remember? can you remember which version of Freemidi you were tryng to use? was it between 1.38 + 1.43? there are distinct differences betwen some of the versions that i read about that they changed over the years.
i remember your freemidi ordeal but there has to be some rational expectation.

"FreeMIDI is a complete MIDI operating system for the Macintosh OS 9. It ships free of charge and is automatically installed with all Mark of the Unicorn music software products." http://www.motu.com/products/software/freemidi/view?searchterm=freemidi

their own website claims its automatically installed so you must have had some type of conflict going on
i can do a fresh os install on my performa 5200cd soon and try to get to the bottom of it.
on my website oldschooldaw.com i did alot of work trying to sort out the versions/timeline

It was actually on an MDD or two running 9.2.2. The Freemidi version was most likely the latest one, but I probably also used older versions just to test. 1.38 to 1.43 is what I used.

What I remember is that you MUST have a SCSI hard drive in your computer for it to work, if it is a computer that originally ran on a SCSI HD. It needs it for the HD authorization, REGARDLESS if the authorization is on the SCSI HD or not. I know that sounds weird, but that's the way it was. However my MDD didn't have that problem.

I remember trying to authorize it, then the authorization crashed, then I tried a few more times, and perhaps used some other authorization, and somehow it just started working. I gave up on FreeMidi relate products altogether for other reasons though.

if the sil3112 cards are seen as SCSI... i wonder if that would work for the auth for unisyn?
did anyone test this  with a normal Sata drive (or SSD) and a SIL3112?

did u have a SATA card with firmtek firmware when you tried this syntho?

mactron.. your auth worked??? did you have a real SCSI drive installed with SCSI Controller? or were u using a sil3112 sata card with firmtek firmware?
