Title: Radeon 9200 and 9250 -- what's the difference?
Post by: ziggy29 on August 06, 2016, 12:10:22 PM
I have two of these -- actually one 9200, one 9250.  I bought a cheap 9200 on eBay (Mac version, not flashed) recently to back up the 9200 I already had and am using in my souped up PM 7600 (it was shrinkwrapped NOS as a 9200 Mac Edition).

Here's the thing -- the NOS was sold as a 9200 Mac Edition, but the label on the card says 9250, not 9200.  And the other card I just bought?  It says 9200.  Both are Mac editions and  not flashed.  They look identical to me when I compare them side by side.

Anyone know what the difference is?  Both have 128MB of VRAM on board.

Usually the 9250 is a "cut down" 9200. Slower GPU (but not that much, about 1/4 less if I remember correctly), and sometimes 64 bit VRam interface instead of 128bit. But I just can tell it about PC Radeon versions. I am really wondering why both of your cards claim to be the Mac Edition, as there was just one PCI 128 MB, ...

Well, both of them have a sticker that says "Mac" on the back of it.  And the 9250 actually came in a shrinkwrapped NOS box -- Radeon 9200 Mac Edition.  Additionally, the 9200-labeled card is slightly wonkier (for my setup) in OS 9 than the 9250-labeled card.

Can you put pictures online about the boxes and the cards? That issue is still a myst to me, ...

The card inside my 7600 was in a shrinkwrapped, presumably NOS Radeon 9200 box.  The first attached picture is from that card -- you see it has a green label and says "9250".  The second image is the box the above card came in (and the shrinkwrapped was sealed when I received it).  The final image is the other one of these I have lying around, a white label saying "9200LE".

I may run both of these through graphics tests in Tiger and see if there's a significant difference.

isnt the 8500 technically stronger/faster/better than the 9200?
