Title: OS 9 Universal image not recognized on MDD
Post by: rpschultz13 on April 18, 2019, 06:51:20 PM
Hi,

Bought a 867 MDD, installed a OWC 120Gb SSD using the Kingwin SATA to IDE Bridge. No problem. The original HDD has 10.5.5 on it, so now it boots to that and the new SSD mounts fine.

But when I try to get it to boot with the OS 9 Universal image, it doesn't recognize it. When I open the .iso file, it says "The disk image you are opening may be damaged and could damage your system". Then a DISK REPAIR box comes up and says "The disk MacOS9Lives" was not repairable by this computer. It is being made available to you with limited functionality."

Same thing with the MacOS9Lives.img within that, same error message. But I see the System Folder, Applications (OS 9), Document, etc. I copied those folders over to the drive, but it doesn't recognize it at startup. The StartUp disk app doesn't recognize it, and booting with OPTION down doesn't recognize it.

  Any ideas?

Thanks!

You do have an actual CD burned from the .iso as an “installer disk CD" and you’re not trying to install from an .iso disk image, simply mounted there on your desktop? (Please pardon my stupid question.)

If you do have a properly created and burned installer disk and you’re holding down the C-key, or the Option-key at boot AND it does not work… have you tried the Open Frimware option to get it to boot from the CD?

And just out of curiosity… in what order (positions) are your drives (old drive and SSD) in on that ribbon cable? AND... old drive jumper set as “Master” and “no settings” available on the Kingwin (ADP-06)?

No CD, just on the hard drive. Not that it matters, but I partitioned the new SSD into two 60 GB drives, Apple Journeled. I Don’t think I have software in 10.5 to burn a Cd.  Would an external hard drive be any different?

Original hard drive I put in the 66 bus, new SSD on the 100. Kingwin jumper on AB according to the instructions in the thread here.

From the…
Details:
Mac OS 9.2.2 Universal Installation, Bootable CD with Mac OS 9.2.2 Install

What machine are you posting from? Can you burn a disk on it?

Usually format “Mac Extended” for OS 9 and leave Journaling to OS X-based / used drives.
After you install 9 on one partition you can enable journaling on the other partition for OS X installation
(at the time of installation of whatever flavor of OS X that you may choose).

OR… this may help you: https://alvinalexander.com/blog/post/mac-os-x/burn-iso-image-cd-on-mac-os-x

I'm such an idiot... probably been ~10 years since I burned a CD? Had to go out to Best Buy and get a pack... literally bought the last box of CD-R's. The iMac I'm typing this on was able to burn the iso.

Good suggestion on Extended vs Journaled, although the OS 9 drive setup doesn't have a Journaled option.

OK, that worked. Wow, pretty cool. Nice job DieHard! Although the OS X Registration script was weird. How would OS 9 know to do that?

That is actually the factory OS 9 registration that came with the very last MDD Disks in late 2003

And if you Cmd+Option+Esc (twice) when that registration process begins…
and then reboot afterwards, you can skip the whole thing. ;)

So I'm glad I got those CD's and made a bootable OS 9 install CD. But I also figured out how to do it from USB, installed Tiger on my MDD from a USB stick. Just have to format it correctly, in DiskUtility, but going into the options and selecting the Apple Partition Map button.
