Title: Backing up the forum
Post by: hpott on September 21, 2021, 01:03:24 AM
As I'm sure most of us are aware, the forum has recently had quite a bit of downtime and some posts have been lost. DieHard has done a wonderful job of maintaining the forums and keeping the site intact, but I'm starting to get a little worried that GoDaddy might do something drastic. I have been thinking that it might be important for users to take backups of the site so that in a worst case senario it would still be possible to access a static version of Mac OS 9 Lives.

i usually remind him at the end of the year to make an offline backup. :)

this unfortunately does not work https://web.archive.org/web/20210802175515/http://www.macos9lives.com/smforum/ because forums usually require an account to browse (and crawl) them.

some forum regions such as "mac mini OS", "hacking the ROM", "OMS problem solving", "are there SATA cards below 800 bucks?" are far more important than the files, recreating the files can by done by many more people than providing special knowledge and sharing experiences, where in the worst case something depends on a single individuum.

I mean it would be feasible, at least hypothetically, to crawl the site and create an offline "mirror" using wget
