Title: A modern website directory for older computers/browsers
Post by: Greystash on July 29, 2021, 04:28:18 PM
Hi everyone, I've been working on a few web projects recently, this one is part of a larger one that will be available soon. I'm trying to compile a directory of websites that are accessible over Classilla, IE5 etc. I'm still on the fence about merging all other platforms into this, maybe they will be separated into different pages - this is still a work in progress and any suggestions are welcome.

You can check it out here: https://directory.sloop.nz/

If you know of any websites that you love/often visit and that others will benefit from then please submit them. The only criteria is that they must be lightweight (no JavaScript, safe CSS), and be accessible via the HTTP protocol.

Excellent idea, I love it! I had actually started something like that a few years ago but had to stop it due to time constraints. There are actually a lot of really cool websites out there, unfortunately many are little known.

Over on the System 7 Today forums we have an ongoing thread of websites that work with System 7 browsers (http://system7today.com/forums/index.php?topic=3118.0) that contains a lot of links that might fit your search. (@mods I hope it's OK to cross-link here, if not, please let me know and delete the hyperlink)

Thanks! There really are but it's so hard to find things now unless you know where to look. Great thanks for that! I will definitely check it out!

Great idea but it isn't accessible from OS9/Classilla.

Thanks for checking it out! It should be, I built these websites for browsers as low as IE5, some may even work on lower versions. Are you accessing it via HTTP rather than HTTPS?

If you are visiting via HTTP, could you please let me know your setup so I can look into it? E.g. Classilla version, OS version (e.g.9.1, 9.2...).

Here it is working on my setup

EDIT:

oh I see that the original link I posted is HTTPS!! Sorry about that, it should be HTTP. I can't edit the original post now.

doh - sorry. I missed the https.

https://news.ycombinator.com/ works from Classilla for tech news.

It is also possible to access reddit through the gopher magical.fish server:

gopher://gopherddit.com/1/cgi-bin/reddit.cgi?menu&worldnews&10

You can change the last bit 'worldnews' to whatever subreddit you want.

That's really cool, I had no idea. I've actually been looking for a good way to browser Reddit so this is great, Thanks!

http://directory.sloop.nz/

Very usefull edit, because with Netscape 7.2 https gives: "Netscape 7.2 and directory.sloop.nz cannot communicate securely because they have no common encryption algorithms"
But with HTTP it works fine and your page is really good!!

At end of the day we are same boat with other old systems users, so it would be good to add these (page are tested with Netscape 7.2):
https://www.msx.org/ - Good example how live can be 39 years old system. (Page ask to accept google.com and another sertificates, but you don't have to allow, tested to work without them)
http://www.vogons.org/ - DOS -WIN98 forum, good to know what you can run with VirtualPC on MacOS9 :)
http://atari.org/ - Jackintosh pages, those 68k computers that never go to PowerPC, they go to Coldfire
talk.maemo.org - forum to older smartphones and tablets that doesn't run with iOS or Android (ok...it seems that this doesn't work with Netscape 7.2 anymore, but works another old browsers Opera9/TenFourFox5)

It is good to get knowledge how they are solved same problems that MacOS9 users might have.

My only question is: Are we 20 years behind them?  ;)
They make new USB-adapters and Graphics adapters and even new computers.

And that site has good wiki. Do we have in year 2041 something like this?:
https://www.msx.org/wiki/Category:Programming
https://www.msx.org/wiki/Hardware_Design

Anyway Big Surr with M1 is 20 years behind MacOS9 with PPC  ;D
