Experiences using MIBs with SNMP under Mac OS 9?
« on: March 07, 2024, 11:20:58 PM »
I know this might be very special, but you know I like challenges with our system.

So here is the quest: I got a "new" network Gigabit card, for one of my PostScript printers, that claims to be even compatible to Mac OS 7 + 8. The producer offers a so called MIB for monitoring and configuring it.
As I never heard about MIBs (Management Information Base) before, I tried to find out more details, and learned that they are modules for SNMP. With OpenTransport SNMP we have this "Simple Network Management Protocol" in general. As the MIB itselve is a simple ASCII file, it should be possible to control my Gigabit network card with Mac OS 9. But how exactly? What do I need to do, to take real configuring activities? What to do with this MIB to reach the card? And how to use it, if it is working only with TCP/IP not with SNMP?

Has anybody ever used a MIB and can enlighten me? ;)

The MIB is more of a definition on how to make the SNMP Trap output "human readable" SNMP is to 99% used for monitoring purposes, so I'm not sure what you can do in terms of manipulation of the cards settings or control it. You need a SNMP client for Mac OS 9 with MIB support to read the data from the card.

There seems to be a SNMP client application called AsantéView made by Asanté. Can't find it online though :(

Ahh, I need a client! Sometimes the magnificent design and integration of Mac OS 9 prevents me from thinking in a simple first abstraction layer. Of course OT SNMP may just provide the interface to the OS and I might need a client, ... ;)

It seems there have been other clients like the "SNMP Watcher" a SNMP MIB Browser.

See https://web.archive.org/web/20041213230120/http://www.dartware.com/snmpwatcher/

It is such a pity that so many commercial software is so hard to find or even lost, …

So there is as well "Intermapper" It seems the last version would be 4.2.3, but in the archive I could only find 4.0.4 from 2003 as download. This version should work for one hour (without serial). https://web.archive.org/web/20030414173158/http://dartware.superb.net/intermapper404.sit

Here is a manual download: https://web.archive.org/web/20030316113003/http://www.intermapper.com/immanual/InterMapper_3.6_Manual.pdf

I'll give it a try and see how much it can be of help. For today – enough archeology ;)

I vaguely remember doing something similar to configure my Osicom FDDI concentrator using Telnet, but I might be mistaken. It was loooong time ago.
If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.
