Title: Nvidia 7800GS OS9 drivers?
Post by: neurocrash on July 06, 2018, 02:07:47 AM
Hi, I have an Nvidia 7800GS that was converted for Mac, and am trying to use it for OS9 so I can have a DVI output.  The problem is that the 2D scrolling is extremely slow.  I've tried the Nvidia drivers pack from this site without improvement.  Does anyone know if there are OS9 drivers that support this card?

This is in a G4 MDD.

Aloha

Unfortunately, I don’t think there is any way to get anything more recent than a GeForce4 running with hardware acceleration, which means that things like scrolling and moving windows will be slow and choppy.

If you have the card that came with the G4, it’ll be faster. I just bought a GeForce4 MX, hopefully it’ll be better than the Radeon 9000 that I had earlier.

"slow" is relative.

in my opinion, default behaviour of OS9 works fine with any mac which supports the OS - solid dragging of big windows works fine with geforce 2 and above.

a mac mini or quicksilver with OS9 (solid dragging at 1920*1200) is lot faster than anything else.

By slow, the 7800GS is demonstrating much worse performance than the stock cards, and has visible screen redraws when moving windows or scrolling within a window.  The Radeon 9000 is much faster for these 2D operations, and I think the GeForce MX is faster still.

Thanks for the clarification.  Too bad the 7800GS isn't as useful as I had hoped.

a 7800GS would be far more usefull in a powermac G5 /w 10.5.8 i think?

Hmmm... I think I tried to put it in a G5 but the slot was different. I seem to recall there was more than one type of AGP card slot configuration, and chalked it up to that, so I bought a GeForce 6800 Ultra for the G5.

I tried really hard, even used my foot, but couldn't get my PCI cards into the Mac Mini ;)
