Development & Programming / Re: Debugging ATI drivers for Mac Mini
« Last post by ssp3 on Today at 08:36:49 AM »
What mode is the graphics card trying to use when the display goes black?

I have no idea.

Quote
Some things to try:
- A modern display that isn't limited to 1920x1080 60Hz. I have a Acer XV273K 4K display which can accept anything up to 5K60 or 8K30 via DisplayPort. Not sure about HDMI/DVI though.

G4 Mini is limited to 1920x1200 on DVI and 1920x1080 on VGA. That's about it.

Quote
- Connect two displays - one display that is known to work so that you can see what timing is being attempted on the display that doesn't work.

There is no provision to connect two displays to G4 Mini.

Quote
- If you can't get two displays, then maybe a screen sharing app, so you can use another Mac to see what's happening when the display goes black on the first Mac.

Never used anything like that in OS9 and have no idea if such app exists.

These three are beyond the point
Quote
- A custom EDID adapter like Dr HDMI 8K.
- A scan converter that can take an input and convert it to a different timing that is acceptable by the display.
- A HDMI capture device (USB or PCIe) - maybe it can accept what ever is being output.

Quote
- SwitchRes - I don't remember if the OS 9 version has custom timing options? Maybe it can at least disable modes that don't work with your display.

It doesn't help, because computer freezes at the moment when ATI extensions load!

But, its not about my particular display, it is about latest version of ATI driver not working with ANY display.

There's nothing wrong with using smaller displays. I personally, despite having several modern 24", find myself more comfortable using 17"-er with my Mini.
Unlike in the old days, where 17" Apple's Trinitron was my main display and PM9600 or G4 DA were my main drivers and I had icons on the desktop in two layers on top of each other, I simply do not have enough stuff to put on a 24" real estate anymore.
Sure, some audio editors/sequencers will profit from larger screens, but even then I find that old Cubase looks a bit odd on a big screen.

But, there are several problems with older displays:
1. Fading CCFL backlight that also changes in color.
2. Not so optimal viewing angles of TN panels.
3. Slow response times

Interesting poll!

Pretty sure I'm at the low-end (any Clamshell users out there? :D)

Running OS 9 on my Mini at 1024x768 on my Samsung SyncMaster. I find no use in using broader displays with OS 9, as my workflows usually including scrolling top-down (e.g. a word document, a website) rather than left-right, so the old SyncMaster still gets the job done. I'd need more height, rather than more width :-)

- display calibration

LOL. I think I'm the only one here who does it on a regular basis.
(…)
All the tutorials will be "für die Katz".
I have an Quato/X-rite around (selected to be able to calibrate all Mac OS 9/10.4.11/Linux computers I have contact with). Sadly I never found time to get into this entire calibration/colour management field. But the Eizo FlexScan SX2461W and especially my LaCie Electron 22 Blue IV are waiting for a calibrated future that will come one day. So be sure I highly appreciate your postings and nothing is "für die Katz"! ;)

Well to be fair, os9 as daily driver in 2024 isnt really an option

We would profit if we enter a mindset where its just a hobby rather
Than for professional use
I also have to strongly disagree! My 9-machines are still my main computers, and wouldn´t we have this ugly TLS-situation I would never boot into Linux at all.

So, no; "hobby" is the opposite of what I use Mac OS 9 for, and I would apreciate if people would benevolently respect that there are still others around who do not do any hobby or retro or just-for-fun with Mac OS 9. Of course I know that my situation (no smartphones around, no interrest in any "social"-media at all, etc.) is very special, and a small minority is acting like me. But we are in existance, and we have very good reasons.

Mac OS 9 on Unsupported Hardware / Re: Mac OS 9 booting on: Mac mini G4

Regrettably, I don’t currently have one of these connected and haven’t the time at present to do so. However, some suggestions:

(1). Simply the change / swap the USB port that you currently have it connected to. (Odd as this may sound, it has worked for me in the past.)

(2). Remove it from the mini completely and zap the PRAM and rebuild the desktop of your OS 9 install.

(3). Then try, try again - booting first with UCA202 disconnected and then plugging it in to the USB port AFTER booting, OR…

(4).
After PRAM zap and desktop rebuild, connect it and then reboot. Any difference?

AND, if you’re not getting any sound to headphones via the UCA202’s headphone jack (with no speakers connected) then you might have a bad unit. Test this first, perhaps before any of the above.

ALSO, I don’t recall being able to set volume via the sound control panel before (but this is relying upon my foggy memory from several years ago). AND the powered speakers that I did use had an inline volume control knob where I rather simply adjusted the volume.

There’s also always the possibility that you’ve an extension conflict, if ALL extensions are ON.

And hopefully you’re not using any sort of USB hub?

Okay, update.

After an hour digging around here, I found a UF0202 and attached it. No, it does not show up in the Sound control panel and it is therefore not level adjustable (there). However it does play desktop Platinum sounds from clicks, etc. And with headphones attached - the sound level, is adjustable through / to the headphones via the volume dial on the unit. THEN popped in a music CD and via iTunes, music played and individual tracks were selectable.

NOTE: in order for your UCA202 to appear in the Sound Control panel (as I believe the M-Audio Transit also requires) you may need to download and install the “ASIO 4ALL USB Audio Driver” from the Behringer website.

Good luck. ;)

You’ve tried headphones alone connected & the volume ctrl?

Actually a powered external speaker set. The issue is that I cannot change the volume in the Control Panel. It's at zero and will not move. When I try to adjust the volume, the menu bar blinks just like it does when you select Mute. It just isn't recognizing that there is an additional sound device on it. All of the extensions appear to be turned on, so I just am not certain what is going on. Going to try to get some screen shots tomorrow from the System Profiler, which does show the device.
