In terms of transparency on my part, every feature that the forum used to have that we don't see any need for is one thing less to put on my "to-do" list, so to say. That's why I'm trying to figure out what has some ground to stand on in terms of users using the feature, if you know what I mean

When the "Like" button helps to highlight messages for any reason, that's good.

An idea for the future, it would not be bad to highlight messages that helped to solve the issue of the topic starter. When such a message rises to the top and stands out, it helps people with the same question to find the answer right away, rather than carefully look through several pages of the discussion.

I think the like button is a good idea, it simplifies and declutters threads. Without a like button you have to comment to show appreciation even if you don't have anything to add to the discussion. I personally don't see much of a difference between a bunch of likes or a bunch of short "thanks" and "I agree" posts, but likes at the bottom of a post are less messy and more concise than a bunch of short comments.

I think the like button might also increase engagement with threads. If someone has nothing to add to the thread but still wants to show some kind of appreciation they're more likely to hit a like button than they are to make a post for just a couple words. A like is better than no engagement at all.

I never use it but of course have been offline in a self-imposed "pay attention to the real world around me" mode for the last four months;  so unfortunately I could not add my vote.

I am not a fan of it, and never use it on social media either. I always enter something positive or constructive instead.

Your posting is the proof of the other side. Because there is no simple button, you had to write something, romanboy feels even more recognized and welcome, and a real interaction was  established, that will lead to more authentically talks and more appreciation in future.

Yeah... I think this is a stretch... Just my opinion, I really don't think a like button equates to the Facebookization of Mac OS 9 Lives; I still miss the ability to give a sight "nod" or "smile" on a post that falls into this category... 1) I agree with that.  2) What an excellent observation  3) I would comment myself, but it won't really add anything meaningful to the conversation.

In this scenario, I just smirk to myself and do nothing, the author does not even know I read it and agree 100%... but if there was a "Like" button, I would be all over that.

OK DieHard, thats the first valid argument. I have to think about it, it has some true point. Until now I thought such buttons are only pushing lazyness and dehumanization plus creations of wrong hirachies through focusation towards credit/score increasement aims.

yep, "smile" or "agree" totally make sense, that are the situations where i use it sometimes when available somewhere.

Voting has closed, but I'll chime in anyway as an infrequent poster but somewhat frequent lurker with my "No."

A forum I'd been a member on for a long time introduced a Like button on posts some years ago, then later expanded it to include a full spectrum of emoji reactions.

I have no real way of quantifying this, but I got the feeling that it changed the incentive for posting from a generally sincere desire to share, or be helpful, or spark conversation... to the little dopamine hit from getting a satisfying number of reactions under one's post. Posts seemed more shallow, and adopted that same "race to see how many are on your side" mindset that can be found everywhere else on the web these days. Is this a good thing for an internet forum?

If I remember correctly, "The Shallows" by Nicholas Carr notes similar observations about the "Like" button.
