Title: NoSTalgia 0.65 - ATARI ST emulation in MacOs9 with OMS support
Post by: Irisman on August 24, 2017, 01:52:03 AM
Hi,

I read: <<The freeware ST emulator NoSTalgia is a complete emulation (...). The older Version 0.65 worked best for me on Mac OS 9.x. It was good to communicate over MIDI with my old Casio CZ-1.>>   source:  http://members.optusnet.com.au/toxicoh/emulate.htm (http://members.optusnet.com.au/toxicoh/emulate.htm)

It´s, maybe, an easy way to use Atari ST MIDI apps like KMP, or YAMAHA V50 synth editor, or another Atari MIDI apps insideMacOs9, using OMS in the MacOs 9.2.2 environment :)

I did not find the NoSTalgia 0.65 software anywhere, so I decided to write to the developer :)

Philippe Gérin, NoSTalgia developer, kindly gave me the link to get the 0.65 version por PPC, with OMS support. I was also authorized to give copies to friends.

Further version 1.1, available at the macintoshgarden site, has the OMS disabled. After reading some info available about versions, it´s written that this function was disabled since 0.7 version.

So, I attach here the NoSTalgia 0.65 version .sit file, to make you curious.

Enjoy!

Awesome! Is it stable enough on a G3?

greetings Irisman!

thank you for sharing this information!
this is very interesting as there are literally tons of ATARI ST applications, some of which were never ported to another platform

is this a new or old development??
are u certain that the program is able to properly route MIDI to an OMS device?

from what i read on the page you linked it seemed to be saying that it doesnt interface with actual real hardware well at all. and that it was better to use to interface virtually with quicktime?

curious as to why the developer would choose to disable OMS? perhaps it was a decision based upon the limitations of the app's ability to interact with real hardware so he purposely disabled?

i look forward to hearing from anyone testing this software!

I tried It on a Power Book G3 PDQ and It ran  👍

I could not use Cubasis . Cubase neither. On G3 or G4.

Hi, nice to read you. 👍

It is early software, not new development. It runs MIDI correctly on very interesting experimental tools for composing like algorythm generators, random note generators or so, what opens new MIDI compostional tools to the absolute awesome and stable DieHards Instant DAW.
For more complex software like sequencers/editors dont run so good. For these purpose I found that the best option for Atari emulator is clearly the Steem 3.2. It works flawlessly on Windows 7 platform. (HP Elitebook 8440p) that I have synchronized ( slave ) to the Power Mac G4 running MacOs9 .

Better get a real Atari if you want the best Atari MIDI experience. For accesory use, emulator  NoSTalgia 0.65 is nice and ready to use and do its job if capable to.

Greetings,
Irisman

yes of course;
MIDI patch editors = accessory use?

there is really a large amount of them for download online
http://www.atarimania.com/utility-atari-st-juno-1--2-editor-_23813.html

if they really allow mac users to use atari midi warez on a real mac with a real midi port it will be very interesting!

I could make the kawai xd-5 librarian work on the mac using the NoSTalgia 0.65, it did the bidirectional MIDI communication well  ;)

Don´t remember well, but think Yamaha 4op editor worked too.

Accesory use = utilities that works on this platform (it´s a matter of try-error to check what are those that runs, fitting your needs.  For me, random note generators, fractal generators, etc, are really nice.

i´ve tried that about 20 years ago, but the main problem is that the copyprotection schemes of old atari software usually dont work in emulators. i didnt even got an editor program working which only requires a serialnumber.

Most "pro" Atari software requires some kind of dongle and few have been cracked. Most of the ones cracked are badly made and are very prone to crash, unfortunately.
The Notator SL crack works fine until you start to do more complex things. I'd recommend to get your hands on a real Atari for that rock solid MIDI timing you always dreamed about ;)

Hello all,

I'm the developper of NoSTalgia.
And its ok to include NoSTalgia 0.65 in the download section.
You also add a direct link :  http://users.skynet.be/sky39147/NoSTalgia_065_PPC.sit

I got some years a go a PDQ on ebay for 17$... it came from Florida, to Spain!  Still my preferred G3; with time I could get all the accesories:   removable floppy drive, removable ZIP drive, and the SCSI HDI adapter, as well as the Cardbus USB card... it only lacks firewire connection, but who matters?  It still holds the serial port :)

As I said, I could not get Cubase works with Nostalgia (although Mr Gerin said it ran...); instead, the Steem emulator for Windozes machines does that jobs without problems

some of which are posted publicly for download as abandonware and freeware

perhaps this might warrant another look>?

Hey gang, I'm working on this one;
M-Audio FireWire MIDI interface (much more stable MIDI Clock than USB)
and NoSTalgia 0.65 (because OMS, which works in OS 9 with the M-Audio FireWire 1814)
NoSTalgia 0.65 has the OMS option and I can see+choose the M-Audio FireWire 1814 in there + OMS)

The trouble I'm getting into, for loading Dr. T's KCS Omega II onto this bad boy is that I cannot mount a NoSTalgia created Hard Disk back into the emulator (it says the Hard Disk Driver is Unregistered)
I've tried copying a newer CART.IMG from a version where this supposed HDD Driver became free but no avail.

Any pointers?

Here's some quotes that touch upon this issue:
Quote
The freeware ST emulator NoSTalgia is a complete emulation, but doesn't access the Mac hardware (e.g. floppy drive - if you have one) so well.
The older Version 0.65 worked best for me on Mac OS 9.x. It was good to communicate using OMS over MIDI with my old Casio CZ-1. (The newer Version 1.42 works with Quicktime Music Instruments, but OMS is greyed out.)

Another cool thing to do is use Atari-based music patch software to edit the sounds of some synthesizers via MIDI. CZ Rider and CZ Android worked well with my old Casio CZ-1 and Mac OS 9.x/OMS on my old Performa 6360.

On OSX, Version 1.42 "sort-of" works. My main problem is MIDI is only output to Quicktime Instruments. I need to spend more time with it. I'm liking using monochrome settings for "serious" applications.

The new Version 1.52 for Mac OSX was released recently, with improvements. My only wish is for "real" MIDI in/out via OSX Core Audio.

This emulator is my favorite for music applications and some games. Unfortunately, the Mac's joysticks don't work with it, so you're stuck using the keypad for games.

A big plus is NoSTalgia can take screenshots.

NoSTalgia can access the Mac MIDI port using Quicktime, (or via OMS on OS 9.x), which is way-cool if you've got a heap of old sequencer files to work with. I was pleased the public release of Passport's Master Tracks Pro 3.6 works well. (On OSX the MIDI in/out seems broken.)

The DuST program for Macintosh is useful to convert ST floppies into disk images before loading. This is a very slow way to move files between the ST and Mac.

An easier way is to drag the HDD-C icon in the NoSTalgia Folder onto Mac OS 9's Disk Copy program. The File Exchange Extension must be enabled for this trick to work.

To make things easier, I keep an alias for Disk Copy in the Mac's NoSTalgia folder. Open the disk image, and swap files as normal on a Mac.

The trick is to drag all copies of the disk image to the trash before restarting NoSTalgia.

On OSX it is easy to just open the NoSTalgia HDD-C file with Apple's DiskimageMounter.app and do the same thing. Just double-click on the HD image to open it, then copy the downloaded ST file to the desired directory location.

Once again, NoSTalgia should not be running while doing this.

A thread about this:
http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=3451

The program tells you to rename the hard drive image to HDD-C or something similar. Make sure you do that step :)

Then you have to mount that image file onto your desktop, using the Disk Copy program on your computer.

After you have that mounted, you transfer any files you want on the hard drive into the new disk that's on your desktop. Now next time you start the emulator and enable the hard disks in the pulldown menu, you can access those included files from the Atari hard drive. Next time you have to use the hard drive you have to remount the image, but the files stay in image file from the last time.

Not an user friendly process at all! I would prefer the setup that Steem and Hatari have where any directory can become the Atari hard drive and you don't have to mount it.

you are way ahead of me, i havent even tried to use it yet;

how familiar are you with ATARI ST ?

generally i stay away from any of these emulations because they all lack hardware support needed for music studio use for the most part?

Let this be noted for the future; it seems to be that using TOS102 (Atari Operating System 1.02) the HDD Driver is not loaded/or is buggy.
I finally tried TOS206 (Atari Operating System 2.06) and it worked! It detects the HDD.

I've loaded KCS onto it and it wants to be in Hi-Res Mode (Monochrome?)

yes, "hi-res" most likely means monochrome. (cubase, notator, geerdes editors.. all wanted the later screens from STE times)

interesting enough, such apps usually still work under TOS emulators.

Alright, alright :)
I'm testing the MIDI In & Out in NoSTalgia,
KCS seems to freeze up every once in a while (this iBook had/has the bad GPU problem so it might not be up for the task, but it is a model from a very specific window in time; it's a G3, it boots OS 9 natively, it has FireWire and USB plus it's a 12" = pretty neat! -too bad about the GPU problem though. My coworker is waiting for a hot-air station, I'm gonna try and heat up the joints and see if it'll work better...)

Anyways, I've managed to get this far (OMS is available in this NoSTalgia version) but I'm not getting any MIDI Out (might be KCS Omega II) -but then again I've only spent a small amount of time with the HDD finally working. I am getting MIDI In from the interface into NoSTalgia into KCS...
I'm getting MIDI Out from OMS inside OS 9...

I'll report back in if it's worth the hassle (I think actually getting a 1040ST or something that runs KCS natively might be best hehe)

mb off topic, but

i´ve recently learned that there are actually adapters to hook up led flat screens to an atari - and that this will even work with executables which require a monchrome monitor.

eventually i go that route next year as i also still have a certain atari app which needs to be revived.

might not work with all monitors and might not be centered 100%, but generally works for some people i know.

I just tried with DieHard's amazing QEMU Mac installer. Nostalgia won't boot. Error -39 - What does that mean?
Title: Re: NoSTalgia 0.65 - ATARI ST emulation in MacOs9 with OMS support
Post by: IIO on February 03, 2024, 11:39:23 PM
-39 is "file or folder not found" or "unexpected EOF"

but my bigger concern is how to get the OMS-midi from the emulator into the host OS.

You can always route a cable back to an input?  ;D

I got Hotz translator running but it behaves funny, it seems there is some kind of buffer or lag, in the beginning note off is only sent when I release the key, later the lag increases even more. Made a short video: https://youtu.be/XygCjFq7Kw8?feature=shared

I also gut Cubase 2.01 MCA to run, it only works when timer B is activated. However I could not get any midi output from it. I have used Cubase ST before so I can rule out that I made a mistake.
