Hardware / Re: AcBel PSU / Quicksilver
« Last post by Jacques on April 17, 2024, 11:33:46 AM »
So I pulled my AcBel 614-0157 QS PSU today as I've been getting some erratic behaviour after swapping in a 9200 gfx card, I noticed one of the caps is slightly bulging. Is this a candidate for replacing all five on the PSU board?

I've never done cap replacements before but have done a bit of soldering and modding. What brand am I looking at for replacements? Nichicon / Panasonic?

That being said, I am sure we can add some new modern mods that will be compatible as time goes on; I am in the process of looking thru my invoices of what I purchased and to see if there are new versions of the mods.  At this point it is unfair to have Knez shell out cash for all these mods, so I suggest as I find each one, we can make a poll, and if it is wanted, then we can all pitch in.

Yes, those that have made monetary donations in the past are certainly quite likely still willing to do so now, in order to help perpetuate this Forum’s on-going existence and continued growth.

In fact, for many of the various parts and disks that I have sent out free of charge over the years I requested only that a small donation be made to the Forum (“to keep the lights on”). And this was never mandatory. Completely and utterly voluntary.

So Knez, please do not hesitate to provide appropriate PayPal (etc.) info for this. ;)

Unfortunately, the DA G4 got all the "love" regarding the time and energy to document this adapter:

http://macos9lives.com/smforum/index.php?topic=6233.0

The fact the DA G4s we tested (in Mac OS 9 only) could address hard drives of over 128GB in size (not documented anywhere on the web), kinda blew our minds and ate up many days to verify and re-verify those findings, So the "guide" for other models is still a work in progress and may never get done :(

In terms of transparency on my part, every feature that the forum used to have that we don't see any need for is one thing less to put on my "to-do" list, so to say. That's why I'm trying to figure out what has some ground to stand on in terms of users using the feature, if you know what I mean :)

Of course I "Like" it, that is why I added it.  I did not want to integrate/inject social media Mods, so the like button was kinda a compromise.  It's a tool, nothing more, where members can instantly get feedback (when another member thinks a one word post is too tedious), also it enables members to see what other members value the same topic; again, just a tool, if it's there and you want to use it great !  If not, fine, leave it hanging on the wall, a controversy is not needed on this one. Just add it and some may use it, some won't, "analysis paralysis" ins't really helping us on this one guys

Yes, Knez is doing a great job and it will take some time... the forum desperately needed php and other versions updates that I specifically dragged my feet on because I knew it would break many of the custom Mods I purchased and added years ago.

The main page had a dynamic frame based Mod that would display News, messages, stats, and other member info. and anchor this info in sub-pages; it was implemented way back in 2015 and whenever I tested forum updates, this was one mod that freaked out and stopped to work, as did other SMF Mods.

So literally 99% of the new issues could not be avoided when the forum got a code face-lift.  We had far too many security issues with the older SFM versions so trust me, we needed to update.  Chris helped me back in the day, manually modify code so we had some cool features like default alphabetical sorting of topics on certain download boards; but unfortunately, updates just replace the procedures with never versions, and thus wipes out any user modified code in the core areas.

I think .time-stamps is hidden in some Open Firmware versions. Two options:
1) setenv fcode-debug? true then restart
2) false to check-visible then try the .time-stamps command again.
Probably the first is preferable since you only have to do it once (unless you zap the pram).

probe-all does the following:
push-state
probe-pci
probe-ext-mac-io
probe-usb
probe-fw
finish-device-tree
pop-state

I suppose you can try probe-pci instead of probe-all. In that case, maybe remove banner so that the normal boot process will do probe-all. It should be smart enough not to repeat the probe-pci part again but I'm not sure.

In either case, you may want to use a catch so that if it fails, the rest of the nvramrc script is executed.

['] probe-pci catch if ." exception:" . . cr then
